Magic: The Gathering is going back to Middle-earth.<\/strong> After The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth<\/em> became one of the best-selling Magic products ever, Wizards of the Coast is following it with The Hobbit<\/strong> \u2014 a Universes Beyond set that adapts Bilbo Baggins’ journey from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain. And this time there’s a first: it’s the first Tolkien set legal in Standard<\/strong>, not just the eternal formats.<\/p>\n\n

The set gets its official debut this weekend at MagicCon: Amsterdam<\/strong> (July 17\u201319, 2026), with the full spoiler season kicking off on Saturday, July 18<\/strong>. Release date & the MagicCon: Amsterdam debut<\/h2>\n

The Hobbit releases Friday, August 14, 2026<\/strong>, with prerelease events running August 7\u201313<\/strong> \u2014 so you’ll be cracking packs at your local store a full week before the global street date. A companion Gift Bundle<\/strong> follows a little later on September 4, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Before any of that, the set gets its grand reveal at MagicCon: Amsterdam<\/strong>. The “There and Back Again \u2014 The Hobbit Debut”<\/strong> panel runs 5:30\u20136:30 PM CEST on Saturday, July 18<\/strong> on the main stage, hosted by Gavin Verhey, Ashley Creech, and Zakeel Gordon. Expect a deep dive into the set’s world, a wall of card previews, Booster Fun treatments, and a full mechanics walkthrough. This is the moment the official spoiler season opens \u2014 even as a smaller set, every iconic character from the book is expected to show up in some form.<\/p>\n\n

The standout here is the Scene Box<\/strong> \u2014 a new collectible concept. The two boxes, “Crack the Plates”<\/strong> and “Treasures of Smaug,”<\/strong> each contain three Play Boosters and six borderless, eternal-legal cards whose art connects edge-to-edge into a single displayable scene from the story. Collect both and you get a wider panorama. It’s a clever way to sell chase cards as wall art.<\/p>\n\n

One notable absence: there are no traditional Commander preconstructed decks<\/strong> in this release. That’s a departure from most 2026 sets, and it means the set’s build-around legends are aimed at the main set and your own brews rather than off-the-shelf decks.<\/p>\n\n
