The Hobbit<\/strong> arrives August 14, 2026, and it does something unusual for a big Universes Beyond release: it ships no preconstructed Commander decks.<\/strong> Where 2023’s Tales of Middle-earth<\/em> handed you four ready-to-play precons, The Hobbit gives you Scene Boxes and a set of singles and tells you to build it yourself. So the only way to answer “what are the best Hobbit commanders?” is to read the legends \u2014 all 24 of them \u2014 and see what they actually want to do.<\/p>\n\n

We did exactly that, going card by card through the confirmed lists for The Hobbit (HOB)<\/strong> and The Hobbit Commander (HOC)<\/strong> on Scryfall. For the set’s release date, products, and mechanics, see our full The Hobbit set guide<\/a>. One thing jumps out immediately: this is the Dwarf-and-Treasure set that Lord of the Rings<\/em> never gave us.<\/strong> Six of the marquee legends are Dwarves \u2014 three of them named Thorin \u2014 and nearly everything red in the set makes, doubles, or spends Treasure. If you’ve been waiting years for a real Dwarf tribal payoff, this is your set.<\/p>\n\n

Below, every commander worth building, ranked and grouped by the deck it anchors \u2014 plus a heads-up on which “new” HOC commanders are actually reprints, and the in-print staples you can buy today<\/em> to jump-start these decks before the set even lands.<\/p>\n\n

How this list works<\/h2>\n

With no precons, “best” here means two things: how strong the commander is as a build-around<\/strong>, and how completely The Hobbit supports its archetype in-set<\/strong> (so you can lean on the new cards instead of importing an entire strategy from other sets). Every mana cost, ability, and card name below is verified against the live Scryfall database for HOB\/HOC. All of these are legal as Commander in any Commander game; the Standard-legality split is covered in the honesty notes<\/a> and FAQ at the end.<\/p>\n\n

1. Dwarves & Treasure \u2014 the set’s flagship archetype<\/h2>\n

This is where The Hobbit is deepest, and it’s the reason to be excited. The engine cards, the payoffs, and the tribe are all in one product for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best commander of the group: Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk.<\/strong> He turns the tribe into a Treasure faucet and then converts those artifact tokens into a scaling team-wide buff \u2014 the rare tribal lord that also ramps you into a bigger threat. Point him at Treasure token generators<\/a> and Equipment<\/a> and the deck plays itself.<\/p>\n\n

If you’d rather go tall than wide, Thorin, Mountain-king<\/strong> is a pure Voltron\/Equipment<\/a> commander \u2014 his ETB is a two-for-one that suits up a creature and shoots something in the same breath. And Smaug the Magnificent<\/strong> is the low-build-effort pick: he ramps himself with Treasure and turns that stockpile into damage, so even a casual “goodstuff red Dragons” list gets a wincon out of him. (He’s also a Dragon<\/a>, if you want to splice him into a tribal Dragons shell.)<\/p>\n\n

2. Elves \u2014 Thranduil finally gets his crown<\/h2>\n

The single most-built Hobbit commander is likely to be an Elf, and it isn’t close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thranduil, the Elvenking<\/strong> lands in Sultai colors that contain a huge pool of legendary Elves, and he’s subtler than a generic “make elves, attack” lord. His graveyard ability rewards a build that uses<\/em> its Elves as fuel \u2014 dying Elves keep working from the yard \u2014 and his legendary-Elf trigger turns a superfriends-style singleton Elf lineup into a card-advantage machine. He’s a natural fit for an existing Elf deck<\/a> that wants a new, more strategic captain.<\/p>\n\n

Elrond, Moon-Reader<\/strong> is quieter but very good in the right shell: any deck packed with tap-abilities (Elves love this) draws off him every turn, and his activated blink protects your key pieces or re-triggers ETBs. He’s a strong 99 in most blue Elf\/value decks and a fine budget commander in his own right.<\/p>\n\n

3. The One Ring & Orc armies<\/h2>\n\n\n

Heads-up before you get excited: Sauron, the Dark Lord in The Hobbit Commander is a reprint, not a new card.<\/strong> He first appeared in 2023’s Tales of Middle-earth<\/em>, and his HOC printing is identical text. That’s genuinely good news if you missed him the first time \u2014 Grixis “amass + Ring” is one of the most beloved LOTR commanders and a superb build-around \u2014 but if you already own a copy, you don’t need to buy the set for him. Reading the card, he’s an card-advantage<\/a> engine dressed as a tribal army deck: the discard-and-draw-four is the real payoff, and the Orc Army is how you get there.<\/p>\n\n

4. Halflings, Food & value<\/h2>\n

There are three<\/em> Bilbos in this set, each a different archetype seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bilbo, Thief in the Night<\/strong> is the most commander-worthy of the trio: a cost-reducer for cast-from-graveyard and cast-from-exile decks that also recurs your spells on attack. Build him with flashback, adventure, and foretell cards and he snowballs fast. Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator<\/strong> is a clever glue piece \u2014 he quietly upgrades any Food deck into a Treasure-ramp deck, and he’s a perfect 99 in the Dwarf-Treasure lists above.<\/p>\n\n

Same heads-up as Sauron: Tom Bombadil is also a reprint from 2023 LOTR<\/strong>, not a new Hobbit card \u2014 a fantastic five-color Saga commander, but not a reason to buy the new set if you already have him. Bard, King of Dale<\/strong> is the fresh multicolor gem here: doubling both your extra draws and your token output makes him an engine for go-wide and card-advantage decks alike, and he pairs beautifully with the Treasure and Elf token themes running through the set.<\/p>\n\n

Other notable legends<\/h2>\n

How to build a Hobbit commander deck (no precon required)<\/h2>\n

Because there’s no ready-made deck, here’s the fastest path to a functional list:<\/p>\n
