You cast Ephemerate on a vanilla 3/3 and… nothing happens. Blink is not a strategy on its own — it’s an engine that re-triggers enter-the-battlefield (ETB) abilities, and if your creatures don’t have abilities worth re-triggering, you’re spending cards to accomplish nothing. The best blink decks are really ETB-value decks that happen to use flicker as the throttle.

This guide sorts that out. We’ll define what blink actually does (including the reset rule that quietly loses games), rank the best blink commanders by the style they’re built for, hand you the enabler and payoff shortlists that make any of them hum, and lay out a build recipe plus a budget starter shell. Every card, cost, and rules interaction below was verified against the live Scryfall database the day this was written — including a few “value” plays that actively help your opponents.

Brago, King Eternal — the definitive blink commander, flickering your whole board every time he connects. Art by Karla Ortiz. © Wizards of the Coast.

What is blink (flicker) in MTG?

Blink — also called flicker — means exiling a permanent and immediately (or at the next end step) returning it to the battlefield. The card leaves and comes back, which re-triggers any “when this enters” ability it has. Cast Ephemerate targeting a Mulldrifter and you draw two more cards. Blink a Solemn Simulacrum and you fetch another land. The blink itself does nothing; the ETB it re-fires is the entire point.

Don’t confuse blink with bounce. Bounce (like Unsummon) returns a creature to your hand — you re-trigger the ETB, but only by recasting the whole card for full mana. Blink keeps the creature on the battlefield and skips the recast. That’s why blink is a value engine and bounce is just tempo: with a repeatable blink outlet, one good ETB creature becomes a machine that pays you every single turn.

The reset rule that quietly loses games

Here’s the detail most lists skip. A blinked permanent returns as a brand-new object with no memory of what happened to it. That cuts both ways, and knowing which way saves or sinks games:

Good: all damage is wiped, so blinking a creature with lethal damage marked on it saves it. Auras and Curses attached by opponents fall off. It dodges “exile target creature” removal — the removal spell fizzles because its target is gone.

Bad: your own +1/+1 counters, your own Auras and Equipment, and any “until end of turn” pump all vanish too. The creature comes back with summoning sickness, so it can’t attack or tap this turn. Never blink your buffed-up beater to “save” it from a fight — you’ll hand it back naked and tapped-out.

The second half of the rule is timing, and blink outlets split into two camps that are not interchangeable. Some return the creature immediately; others exile it now and return it at the beginning of the next end step — meaning your creature is gone for the entire turn. If you blink a blocker away right before combat with a delayed outlet, you have no blocker. If a board wipe is on the stack, only an immediate-return blink saves your creature; a delayed one leaves it in exile when the dust settles… then dumps it back into an empty board. Match the tool to the job:

Return timing

Outlets

Use it for

Immediate (“then return”)

Ephemerate, Restoration Angel, Cloudshift, Ghostly Flicker, Soulherder, Conjurer’s Closet, Emiel, Deadeye Navigator

Dodging removal on the stack, saving a creature mid-combat, instant-speed ETB value on other players’ turns.

Delayed (returns at next end step)

Roon, Flickerwisp, Charming Prince, Eerie Interlude, Yorion, Norin, Gilraen (default mode)

End-of-turn value when the creature isn’t needed this turn. Do not use to save a blocker or beat a wipe already on the stack.

The blink engine: enabler + payoff

Boiled down, a blink deck is two lists stapled together. Get the ratio right and it plays itself; get it wrong and it durdles.

Enablers — the repeatable blink outlets (Soulherder, Conjurer’s Closet, Thassa, an every-turn commander). These are the throttle.

Payoffs — creatures whose ETB is worth firing again and again (Mulldrifter draws, Solemn ramps, Reflector Mage bounces). These are the deck.

The rookie error is loading up on enablers and running eight payoffs. You end up with a hand full of flicker spells and nothing worth flickering. Flip it: run 12–16 ETB payoffs and 8–12 enablers, so you almost always have a target. A third mini-category — ETB doublers like Panharmonicon and Yarok — multiplies everything and belongs in every serious build.

Best blink commanders by style (2026)

These are the commanders that define the archetype, grouped by how they blink. Whenever he deals combat damage to a player, you exile any number of your nonland permanents and return them — re-firing every ETB on your board at once, untapping your mana rocks, and even dodging Auras on your stuff. Connect twice and most tables fold to the sheer card advantage. Brago wants evasion enablers and a way to protect the swing, but when he hits, no other commander generates this much value in a single trigger.

Activated value: Roon of the Hidden Realm (start here)

If you’re new to blink, build Roon first. He’s a 3/3 with an activated blink you can point at your own creature every turn — and Bant colors give you the deepest ETB toolbox in the game (green ramp like Wood Elves and Solemn Simulacrum, white removal-on-a-stick, blue card draw). At $0.32 he’s nearly free, and the deck teaches the archetype’s rhythm without asking you to connect in combat. One catch: Roon’s blink is a delayed return (next end step), so it’s an end-of-turn value engine, not a combat trick.

The payoff commander: Yarok, the Desecrated

Yarok doesn’t blink — it makes every blink twice as good. “If a permanent entering causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.” Blink a Mulldrifter under Yarok and draw four. Every payoff in the deck doubles, every fetch-land trigger doubles, every ETB doubles. Sultai gives you black recursion to loop it all. It’s the strongest ceiling in the archetype and, at $0.35, the best value in the command zone.

Ephemerate — one white mana, two blinks (thanks to rebound), and the best removal-dodge in the archetype. Deharme. © Wizards of the Coast.

Enabler-gods and build-arounds: Thassa, Emiel, Aminatou

Some commanders are the blink engine. Thassa, Deep-Dwelling blinks a creature every end step for free and taps down blockers, all on an indestructible body — but she’s the priciest option here at $28.96. Emiel the Blessed blinks any creature for {3} with no cap, the backbone of countless value and combo builds (and a Unicorn-counter kicker on top). Aminatou, the Fateshifter runs the plan from a planeswalker: her −1 blinks a permanent every turn while she sits safely above the fray, anchoring a grindy Esper control shell.

Budget and mono-color: Gilraen, Obzedat, Norin, Lagrella

You don’t need a big budget to blink. Gilraen ($0.35) is a mono-white every-turn outlet that also buffs. Obzedat, Ghost Council ($0.98) blinks itself each end step to dodge removal and drain the table. Lagrella, the Magpie ($0.19) is a one-card board-control package — she exiles a creature from every opponent and hands your own back with two +1/+1 counters. And Norin the Wary turns self-flicker into a mono-red archetype: he blinks himself whenever anyone casts a spell, so paired with Impact Tremors or Purphoros he pings the table on a loop.

Best repeatable blink enablers

These are the outlets that turn one ETB into an engine. Three payoffs above (Reflector Mage, Skyclave Apparition, Agent of Treachery) remove or steal something when they enter. A repeatable blink outlet turns each of them into an every-turn removal spell: Reflector Mage bounces a creature each end step, Agent of Treachery re-steals the best permanent on the table, and a blinked Sun Titan can even recur your dead removal creatures. That’s how a “value” blink deck quietly becomes a soft-lock — you’re not just out-carding the table, you’re dismantling it one ETB at a time. Never blink your own token creatures thinking you’ll re-trigger something; you just removed a body. (This is also why a blinked Blade Splicer keeps its old Golem but the Golem itself can’t be blinked for value.)

Blinking Skyclave Apparition hands your opponent an X/X. Its leave-the-battlefield trigger makes the exiled card’s owner an X/X Illusion token. So every blink returns their card to them as a creature while you exile something new — it’s a trade, not free removal. Blink it only when the swap is worth it, not on autopilot.

Immediate vs. delayed return is not a detail. Ephemerate, Cloudshift, and Restoration Angel return a creature immediately; Roon, Flickerwisp, and Charming Prince return it at the next end step. Only immediate blinks save a creature from a board wipe on the stack or keep a blocker up — a delayed blink leaves it gone all turn.

Ephemerate is two blinks for one card. Rebound exiles it on resolution and lets you recast it free next upkeep. Don’t treat it as a one-shot — sequence it so you get both the protection and the value.

Yarok and Panharmonicon aren’t the same doubler. Panharmonicon only doubles artifact or creature ETB triggers. Yarok doubles any permanent entering — lands, enchantments, and planeswalkers included. Yarok is strictly broader; run both if you can.

Restoration Angel can’t blink itself. It reads “target non-Angel creature,” so it can’t save itself or another Angel — a small line that catches people mid-combat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best blink commander for beginners?

Roon of the Hidden Realm at about $0.32. He’s a self-contained every-turn blink outlet, his Bant colors give you the deepest ETB toolbox, and he doesn’t need to connect in combat to work. If you’d rather go bigger, Brago, King Eternal is the iconic mass-blink payoff, and Yarok is the best value if you’re in Sultai.

What’s the difference between blink, flicker, and bounce?

Blink and flicker are the same thing — exile a permanent and return it to the battlefield, re-triggering its ETB. Bounce returns a creature to your hand, so you’d have to recast it for full mana. Blink keeps the creature in play and skips the recast, which is why it builds an engine and bounce doesn’t.

Does blinking a creature remove +1/+1 counters and Auras?

Yes. A blinked permanent returns as a new object with no counters, no attached Auras or Equipment, and summoning sickness. That’s great for shedding an opponent’s Curse or clearing lethal damage, but it wipes your own counters and buffs too — so never blink a creature you’ve spent resources pumping.

How many lands should a blink deck run?

Around 36–38. Blink decks are creature-based rather than cantrip-heavy, so you don’t get the free card selection that lets a spellslinger deck cut lands. A healthy count keeps a blink target on board and the mana available to flicker it.

Is blink a good archetype in Commander?

Very. It’s one of the most resilient value engines in the format: instant-speed blinks dodge targeted removal, ETB doublers scale it hard, and payoffs like Reflector Mage and Agent of Treachery let it play defense while it grinds. Its weakness is the board wipe — a creature-dense deck rebuilds slowly — so pack instant-speed protection and a way to reset the table yourself.

The best blink (flicker) commanders in MTG for 2026, ranked by playstyle – plus the ETB payoffs, flicker enablers, a full build recipe, and a budget starter shell.
