Players read it as “this can’t be removed,” build a whole deck around that reading, and then watch their eight-mana angel walk into a three-mana sorcery and die anyway.

The truth is much narrower, and once you see it the keyword becomes far more useful — both to play and to beat. Indestructible stops exactly two things: the word “destroy,” and lethal damage. That is the entire list. Everything else Magic can do to a permanent still works, and there are seven distinct ways it still works.

This guide covers the rules precisely, the best indestructible cards and the cards that grant it, and — the part almost nobody writes down — a complete, sorted list of how to kill an indestructible creature. Every card below was verified against the live Scryfall database, and every rule number against the Comprehensive Rules.

What indestructible actually does

The governing rule is CR 700.4: “If a permanent is indestructible, rules and effects can’t destroy it. Such permanents are not destroyed by lethal damage, and they ignore the lethal-damage state-based action.”

Two clauses, two immunities. Note what the rule does not say. It doesn’t say the permanent can’t leave the battlefield. It doesn’t say it can’t die. It says it can’t be destroyed — and “destroyed” in Magic is a specific technical term, not a synonym for “removed.”

Most helpfully, the reminder text printed on the cards themselves says it plainly. Adanto Vanguard reads: “Damage and effects that say ‘destroy’ don’t destroy it.” That is the whole keyword in one line.

Effect

Does indestructible stop it?

Why

“Destroy target creature”

Yes

The word “destroy” is explicitly blocked by CR 700.4.

Combat damage / burn spells

Yes

Lethal damage is checked by state-based action 704.5g, which destroys the creature. Wizards wrote those two state-based actions with different verbs on purpose, and the difference is worth roughly a dozen cards in every Commander game you play.

The eight ways an indestructible creature still dies

Sorted roughly by how often they actually come up at a Commander table.

How it dies

Rule it uses

Typical cost

1. −X/−X to zero toughness

SBA 704.5f

2–4 mana; the cleanest sweeper answer

2. Three mana, and its cost is life rather than mana, so it scales into the late game without scaling in price: “As an additional cost to cast this spell, pay X life. All creatures get −X/−X until end of turn.” A commander with indestructible, hexproof and a stack of counters simply falls over.

Black Sun’s Zenith does the same job through a different mechanism — it uses −1/−1 counters, which stay on the board permanently rather than wearing off at end of turn. Against a board of indestructible creatures with regeneration or recursion, the permanence matters.

The permanence has a second consequence worth knowing: because those −1/−1 counters stay put, proliferate turns one Black Sun’s Zenith into a sweeper that keeps sweeping. Proliferate adds another counter of each kind already there, so every creature that survived the first pass takes one more −1/−1 each time you do it — and it never uses the word target, so hexproof and shroud don’t stop it either. We cover the full ruleset in our guide to proliferate.

Indestructible armour is no defence against a shrinking toughness — −X/−X sends the creature to the graveyard without ever destroying it.

The most complete answer: exile

Exile beats indestructible, and it also beats every death trigger, every reanimation plan, and every “when this dies” payoff. It is the reason Swords to Plowshares has been a one-mana staple for three decades.

The clearest illustration of the destroy/exile split lives in two white sweepers of almost identical cost. Austere Command at {4}{W}{W} says “Destroy all creatures…” — an indestructible board shrugs it off completely. Merciless Eviction at {4}{W}{B} says “Exile all creatures” — the same board is gone. Six mana either way, and one of them does nothing.

Exile doesn’t destroy anything. It simply moves the permanent to a zone where indestructible has nothing to say.

The most elegant answer: turn it into a land

This is the one most players never think of. Song of the Dryads ({2}{G}) reads “Enchanted permanent is a colorless Forest land.” Imprisoned in the Moon ({2}{U}) is more explicit: the permanent “loses all other card types and abilities.”

Indestructible is an ability. Strip the abilities and it is gone with the rest — no destruction required, and the creature is neutralised rather than killed. These two auras also answer commanders that would otherwise just be recast from the command zone, which makes them quietly among the best answers green and blue have to a resilient general.

Best indestructible creatures and permanents

Prices are the current Scryfall market figure and move around; treat them as an order of magnitude, not a quote.

Creature

Cost

Why it’s here

~Price

Avacyn, Angel of Hope

{5}{W}{W}{W}

The archetype in one card — flying, vigilance, indestructible, and “Other permanents you control have indestructible.” That includes your lands.

$29

Blightsteel Colossus

{12}

Trample, infect, indestructible — and it shuffles itself back into the library instead of ever reaching a graveyard.

$41

Zetalpa, Primal Dawn

{6}{W}{W}

Five keywords on one line: flying, double strike, vigilance, trample, indestructible. The creature takes the damage and survives.

Can you destroy all creatures and kill an indestructible one?

Not with a spell that says “destroy” — Wrath of God, Damnation, Austere Command and Vanquish the Horde all leave it standing. Use a −X/−X sweeper like Toxic Deluge or an exile sweeper like Merciless Eviction instead.

Do −1/−1 counters kill indestructible creatures?

Yes. Once toughness reaches 0, state-based action 704.5f puts the creature into its owner’s graveyard. That is not destruction, so indestructible provides no protection.

Does indestructible stop exile?

No. Exile moves the permanent to a different zone without destroying it. Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile and Utter End all answer indestructible creatures cleanly.

Does indestructible stop sacrifice effects?

No. Sacrificing is an instruction to the permanent’s controller, not a destruction effect. Edicts such as Diabolic Edict and Sheoldred’s Edict get through.

Does the legend rule work on indestructible legends?

Yes. If a player controls two legendary permanents with the same name, state-based action 704.5j puts the extras into the graveyard. Cloning an opponent’s indestructible legend is a legitimate — if situational — removal spell.

Can an indestructible planeswalker die?

Yes. A planeswalker at 0 loyalty is put into the graveyard by state-based action 704.5i, which is not destruction. Gideon Blackblade is worth noting here: he is only an indestructible creature during your turn, and remains a planeswalker throughout.

What is the cheapest answer to an indestructible commander?

Swords to Plowshares at one mana if you’re in white. Outside white, Imprisoned in the Moon and Song of the Dryads at two and three mana are the most reliable, and they also stop the commander being recast from the command zone.

Indestructible stops exactly two things: the word destroy, and lethal damage.
