Here is the one that matters, quoted verbatim from the rules effective 7 August 2026:

701.47a To amass [subtype] N means “If you don’t control an Army creature, create a 0/0 black [subtype] Army creature token. Choose an Army creature you control. Put N +1/+1 counters on that creature. If it isn’t a [subtype], it becomes a [subtype] in addition to its other types.”

Read the order of operations carefully, because it is not the order most people say out loud:

Check first. If you control no Army, you create a 0/0 black Army token of the named subtype.

Choose second. You choose an Army creature you control. The rule says choose, not “the Army” — which is your first clue that controlling more than one is possible.

Counters third. N +1/+1 counters go on the chosen creature.

Type last. If that creature isn’t already the named subtype, it becomes that subtype in addition to its other types.

The token is created before the choice, not after it, which is why a card like Goblin Plate Mail — “When this Equipment enters, amass Goblins 1, then attach this Equipment to the amassed Army” — always has a legal target even on an empty board.

The Army is one creature, and that is the whole risk

An Army token enters as a 0/0. It survives only because of the counters you put on it. This produces a set of failure modes that don’t exist for a normal token strategy, and they are the reason amass decks look explosive and lose quietly.

Trap

What actually happens

Amass 0, or amass X where X is 0

You still create the 0/0 token if you had no Army. If you want a starting list to modify, browse the public deck gallery or run a build you already own through the deck analyzer to see where the counters actually land.

Amass FAQ

What does amass mean in MTG?

Amass [subtype] N means put N +1/+1 counters on an Army creature you control. If you don’t control an Army, you first create a 0/0 black Army creature token of that subtype, then put the counters on it.

What does amass Orcs 1 mean?

Put one +1/+1 counter on an Army you control, and make that Army an Orc in addition to its other types. If you control no Army, create a 0/0 black Orc Army token first and put the counter on that.

Can you have more than one Army?

Yes. Rule 701.47a says to “choose an Army creature you control,” which only matters if more than one is possible. Amass itself never makes a second Army while you already control one, but clone and token-copy effects can, and then each amass lets you choose which Army grows.

What happens if I amass Goblins while I control an Orc Army?

Your existing Army gets the counters and becomes a Goblin in addition to being an Orc. You do not get a second token. The same token can end up an Orc Zombie Sliver Goblin Army if you amass all four subtypes.

Do my old War of the Spark cards still say “Amass 3”?

The printed cards do, but their official text does not. Rule 701.47d confirms that every card printed with amass N and no subtype has been errata’d to read “amass Zombies N.”

Is the Army token a Zombie?

Only if you amassed Zombies. The token is created with the subtype named by the amass instruction that made it — Zombie, Orc, Sliver or Goblin — and accumulates more subtypes as you amass with other cards.

What happens when my Army dies?

All of its counters are gone permanently. The next amass creates a fresh 0/0 token and starts over. Nothing carries across.

What happens if I amass 0?

If you control no Army, you still create the 0/0 token, and it dies immediately to state-based actions because it has no counters. Rule 701.47b still counts you as having amassed, so any “when you amass” triggers still work.

Is amass good in Commander?

It is good in a pod that can’t remove one creature repeatedly, and poor against decks holding spot removal. Its ceiling is high and its floor is a dead 0/0, so builds that succeed load up on protection like Lazotep Plating and Gleaming Overseer rather than on more amass sources.

How many amass cards are there?

Seventy-one across all sets as of The Hobbit: 31 Orc cards, 24 Zombie cards, 15 Goblin cards and one Sliver card. No card amasses two different subtypes, so those four numbers add up to the total exactly.

What is the best amass card?

Orcish Bowmasters by play rate, though most decks run it for its flash damage trigger rather than the Army. For a deck actually built around the mechanic, March from the Black Gate at $0.21 and Dreadhorde Invasion at $0.40 give you the most repeated triggers per dollar.

Does amass work with proliferate?

Yes, and well. The Army’s power and toughness come entirely from +1/+1 counters, so every proliferate adds another counter to it, and the Army is usually the largest counter-bearing permanent you control.

Is the amass Goblin Army legal before The Hobbit releases?

The set’s cards become legal in Constructed formats on the release date, 14 August 2026. Prerelease events on 7–13 August let you play them in Limited before then.
