Mana rocks are the most misunderstood card class in Commander. We counted all 353.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

There are 353 mana rocks<\/strong> in paper Magic. Every guide you have read ranks them by how much mana they add. That is the wrong number, and it produces the wrong list.<\/p>\n

A Signet reads “{1}, {T}: Add {W}{U}”<\/em>. It adds two mana \u2014 and it costs one to do it. The net is +1<\/strong>, exactly the same as an Arcane Signet, a Cluestone, a Keyrune or a Commander’s Sphere. We pulled all 353 of them from Scryfall, parsed the activation cost as well as the output, and counted the difference.<\/p>\n

The result: only 46 repeatable mana rocks in Magic net two or more mana per activation.<\/strong> 247 net exactly one. 11 net zero or less. That is the real shape of artifact ramp, and it is nothing like the way the format talks about it.<\/p>\n

What counts as a mana rock<\/h2>\n

Stated before counting, so you can check the number: a mana rock is a paper artifact<\/strong> that is not a land<\/strong>, not a creature<\/strong>, not a Vehicle and not a planeswalker, and that has its own mana ability<\/strong>. Everything here comes from Scryfall’s card data on Aug 26 2026.<\/p>\n

Three exclusions are worth naming because they are where every automated list goes wrong:<\/p>\n\n

The net-mana table: what artifact ramp actually looks like<\/h2>\n

Net mana = mana added, minus mana paid to activate. Sorted across all 329 rocks with a fixed, measurable output:<\/p>\n\n

Read the middle row again. 254 of the 329 measurable mana rocks in Magic net a single mana.<\/strong> They are colour fixers that happen to be artifacts. Calling them ramp is a habit, not a description.<\/p>\n

The Signet correction<\/h2>\n

The ten guild Signets are on every staple list in the format, usually described as two-mana rocks that produce two. Here they are next to the cards they are supposedly better than:<\/p>\n\n

A Signet’s advantage over an Arcane Signet is not quantity, it is shape<\/em>: it turns one generic mana into two coloured pips, which fixes a greedy curve. That is a real thing to want. It is not acceleration.<\/p>\n

And Celestial Prism<\/strong> is the cautionary tale \u2014 {2}, {T}: Add one mana of any color<\/code> is a net \u22121<\/strong>. It has been legal since 1993 and it has never been worth a slot.<\/p>\n

How long a mana rock takes to pay for itself<\/h2>\n

A rock that costs three and nets one is not profitable until its third activation. Cast it on turn three and it is still behind on turn five. This is the table nobody prints:<\/p>\n\n

167 rocks need three activations.<\/strong> That is the single largest group, and it is the reason a deck stuffed with three-mana rocks feels slow no matter how many it draws.<\/p>\n

Five of the eight are the Power Nine Moxen, which nobody was casting anyway. The two that changed real decks are Mana Crypt<\/strong> and Jeweled Lotus<\/strong>. Note what they have in common with Sol Ring, which is still legal: all three break the break-even table above, repaying their cost immediately or before they are even cast.<\/p>\n

Every price here is the cheapest paper printing<\/strong>. That matters more than it sounds: taking the default printing instead moves 131 of these prices, and reports a null for Mox Jet, which certainly has a price.<\/p>\n\n

The last four are the deliberate exceptions: they net +1, and they are on the list because fixing<\/em> is worth a card in a three- or four-colour deck even when acceleration is not. Everything above them is there on the numbers.<\/p>\n

Where mana rocks fit against the rest of your ramp<\/h2>\n

Artifacts are one of three ways to accelerate, and the net-mana lens applies to all of them. Land-based ramp is slower but harder to punish \u2014 a Wrath does not kill a land \u2014 which is covered in our guide to the best lands for Commander<\/a>. If you are assembling a deck from scratch, the rocks here belong alongside the rest of the Commander staples<\/a>. A mana rock is an artifact with its own mana ability \u2014 you cast it, and from then on it taps for mana. By the definition used on this page (paper artifact, not a land, not a creature, not a Vehicle, not a planeswalker, with a mana ability of its own) there are 353<\/strong> of them.<\/p>\n\n

What is the best mana rock in MTG?<\/h3>\n

Sol Ring.<\/strong> It costs one, nets two, repays itself on its first activation, and costs about $1.46. Only 13 mana rocks in Magic break even in a single activation and almost all the others are Power Nine or banned.<\/p>\n\n

Are Signets good?<\/h3>\n

Yes, but not for the reason usually given. A Signet adds two mana and costs one to activate, so it nets +1<\/strong> \u2014 identical to Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone or a Cluestone. What it uniquely does is convert one generic mana into two coloured<\/em> pips, which is genuinely valuable in a greedy two-colour curve. It is fixing, not acceleration.<\/p>\n\n

How many mana rocks should a Commander deck run?<\/h3>\n

Most well-built lists run between 8 and 12 pieces of total ramp, of which perhaps 4\u20138 are rocks. The more useful question is which ones: a deck with six three-mana rocks that each net +1 has spent 18 mana to gain 6 a turn, and will feel slow no matter how many it draws.<\/p>\n\n

Which mana rocks are banned in Commander?<\/h3>\n

Eight: Black Lotus, Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, and the five Power Nine Moxen (Emerald, Jet, Pearl, Ruby, Sapphire). Sol Ring remains legal.<\/p>\n\n

Why was Mana Crypt banned but not Sol Ring?<\/h3>\n

Both break the break-even curve, but Mana Crypt costs zero \u2014 it accelerates you on turn one from an empty board with no investment at all, and its drawback (an average of 1.5 damage a turn) is irrelevant in a 40-life format. Sol Ring at least asks for a card and a mana.<\/p>\n\n

Is Arcane Signet better than a guild Signet?<\/h3>\n

They net the same (+1). Arcane Signet taps for any colour in your commander’s identity with no activation cost; a guild Signet turns one mana into two specific pips. In three-or-more-colour decks Arcane Signet is usually better; in a two-colour deck that wants double pips early, the guild Signet is.<\/p>\n\n

What is the cheapest good mana rock?<\/h3>\n

Worn Powerstone<\/strong> at about $0.31 \u2014 three mana, nets +2, and its only drawback is that it enters tapped. Dreamstone Hedron<\/strong> at $0.17 nets +3 but costs six.<\/p>\n\n

Do mana rocks count as ramp?<\/h3>\n

Only 46 of the 353 do, if ramp means “gains you mana”. The other 247 measurable ones net a single mana and 11 net zero or less. Most mana rocks are colour fixers.<\/p>\n\n

Chromatic Orrery<\/strong> nets +5 and lets you spend mana as any colour, though it costs seven. Are mana rocks better than mana dorks?<\/h3>\n

Dorks<\/a> are cheaper and faster \u2014 a one-mana creature that taps for one nets +1 a turn earlier than any rock can. They also die to every board wipe and every removal spell in the format. Rocks survive creature sweepers, which in Commander is where most of the damage comes from.<\/p>\n\n

Why do so many mana rocks cost three?<\/h3>\n

185 of the 353 \u2014 52.4% \u2014 cost exactly three, because that is the slot Wizards has repeatedly used for the “fixes your colours, replaces itself” design (Cluestones, Commander’s Sphere, Chromatic Lantern and so on). It is also the least efficient rung on the curve: a three-mana rock that nets +1 does not turn a profit until its third activation.<\/p>\n\n

Rank mana rocks by net mana, not by the number after “Add”, and the format’s received wisdom falls apart in a useful way. The ten guild Signets are fixing, not ramp. More than half the card pool sits at three mana for a single net mana and never pays off. And the 46 rocks that genuinely accelerate you are mostly cheap \u2014 Worn Powerstone at thirty-one cents does what a Grim Monolith does at $475, one turn later.<\/p>\n

If your deck is running six rocks and still stumbling on turn five, count the net mana rather than the cards.
