What shipped instead? Is it better or worse value? And if you want a Hobbit Commander deck, what do you actually do now?

We pulled every card in the set from the Scryfall API and priced all 79 commander-legal cards to answer those questions with numbers rather than vibes. The short version: the set gives you 79 legal commanders, the replacement product is substantially more expensive than a precon would have been, and you can still build a genuinely fun 100-card Dwarf deck out of the set for $28.36.

The Hobbit is the first Middle-earth set to arrive without a single Commander precon.

The short answer: The Hobbit has zero Commander precons

Every recent Universes Beyond premier set has been paired with at least one Commander deck. The Hobbit was not. There is no “Thorin’s Company” precon, no “Riddles in the Dark” precon, and no Hobbit Commander deck of any kind on shelves.

You can confirm this structurally: in Magic’s card database, Commander products get their own set code attached to the parent expansion. Lorwyn Eclipsed has one. Secrets of Strixhaven has one. Marvel Super Heroes has one. Reality Fracture and Star Trek have them queued for later in 2026. The Hobbit’s only child products are a token set and a bonus sheet.

2026 premier set

Release

Commander precons?

Lorwyn Eclipsed

23 Jan 2026

Yes

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

6 Mar 2026

Yes — one deck (“Turtle Power!”)

Secrets of Strixhaven

24 Apr 2026

Yes

Marvel Super Heroes

26 Jun 2026

Yes

The Hobbit

14 Aug 2026

No — none

Reality Fracture

2 Oct 2026

Yes

Star Trek

13 Nov 2026

Yes

A co-operative product set around the Battle of Five Armies has been signposted for 2027, but details have not been announced and it is not a Commander precon replacement in any case. Across its 158 printings there are 117 distinct card names, and the sheet splits cleanly into three bands by collector number.

Band

Collector numbers

Contents

New Hobbit rares

1–12

12 brand-new cards, all rare

Middle-earth Classic box toppers

13–52

40 borderless mythic reprints from Tales of Middle-earth

Alternate treatments & further reprints

53+

Additional printings and 9 new mythic legends

In total the sheet carries 21 new cards and 96 distinct reprints. Critically, the Eternal cards are not Standard or Modern legal — of the 158 printings, 49 are legal only in Commander, Legacy and Vintage. This is a Commander-and-eternal-formats product wearing a bonus-sheet costume.

The box-topper band is where the value sits, and it includes some of the most recognisable cards in the Middle-earth catalogue: The One Ring, Orcish Bowmasters, Tom Bombadil, Delighted Halfling, Sauron, the Dark Lord, Andúril, Flame of the West, and the full cycle of legendary lands including The Shire, Rivendell, Minas Tirith and Mount Doom.

One thing to watch if you are a constructed player rather than a Commander player: The One Ring is banned in Modern, and Troll of Khazad-dûm is banned in Legacy. We priced every commander-legal card in the set at its cheapest paper printing and split them by which product they come from.

Source

Commanders

Median price

Under $1

Over $10

Cost of all

The Hobbit main set (boosters)

48

$0.34

35 of 48

3

$136.08

The Hobbit Eternal (bonus sheet)

31

$10.78

2 of 31

16

$548.15

The median Eternal commander costs 32 times the median main-set commander. Sixteen of the 31 Eternal commanders are over $10, and six are over $25. Buying the Eternal commander lineup outright runs $548.15.

Set that against what a precon is. Recent Commander precons carry a manufacturer’s suggested price in the region of $50 and frequently sell below it, and they arrive as a complete, shuffled-up, ready-to-play 100-card deck with a guaranteed face commander. The Hobbit replaces that with a lottery: the best Hobbit commanders are chase mythics on a bonus sheet, and you either open one or you buy it as a single at market rate.

Here is the top of that market.

Commander

Cost

Colours

Price

Dáin of the Ancient Halls

{3}{R}{W}

Boros

$74.43

Thranduil the Strategist

{3}{G}{U}

Simic

$67.59

Thorin, Company’s Leader

{4}{R}

Mono-red

$48.91

Chief of the Wilds

{2}{B}{G}

Golgari

$41.49

Great Goblin, Foul-Hearted

{3}{B}{R}

Rakdos

$39.51

Smaug the Impenetrable

{5}{B}{R}

Rakdos

$27.94

Galadriel, Light of Valinor

{2}{G}{W}{U}

Bant

$24.40

Gandalf, Shadow’s Foe

{5}{U}{U}

Mono-blue

$23.80

Bolg, Erebor’s Reckoning

{4}{B}{R}

Rakdos

$21.75

Sauron, the Dark Lord

{3}{U}{B}{R}

Grixis

$21.07

Prices are the cheapest available paper printing at time of writing and will move — check live numbers on our card pricing tool before you buy anything on this list.

How this compares to the 2023 Middle-earth set

Tales of Middle-earth in June 2023 did it the traditional way: a main set plus a dedicated Commander product containing four preconstructed decks. Counting every commander-legal card across each release, the difference is clear.

Set

Year

Commander precons

Legal commanders

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth

2023

4 decks

129

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

2026

1 deck

103

The Hobbit

2026

0 decks

79

So The Hobbit is not simply trading precons for a wider commander pool — it gives you 39% fewer legal commanders than the 2023 Middle-earth set did, and no ready-made decks. If you were hoping the missing precons were compensated for elsewhere, they were not.

The 79 commanders you can actually build with

The good news is that the main set’s commanders are cheap, plentiful and mostly excellent. First, the three permanent types are counted together, so an Equipment, your commander and a Saga is already enough. Second, your commander is itself a legendary permanent, so you begin every game one third of the way there. Third — and this is the important clause — once you have an enduring story, you have it for the rest of the game. It does not switch off when the board is wiped.

That last point is what makes Storied worth building around rather than around. Turn it on early, then stop worrying about it.

Build this instead: a $28 Dwarf deck

Here is the practical answer to “there’s no precon”. The Hobbit’s deepest archetype is Dwarves — the set is built around Thorin’s company — and the tribal support is almost entirely commons and uncommons. We built a complete 100-card Commander deck to a stated rule: Thorin Oakenshield, plus every Commander-legal Dwarf and Equipment from The Hobbit under $1.50, plus the Boros Dwarf payoffs under $1, plus a standard ramp and removal shell, plus 36 lands.

Every card was verified through the Scryfall API. The result:

Deck stat

Value

Total price (cheapest paper printings, basics excluded)

$28.36

Median card price

$0.22

Cards under $1

71 of 77

Dwarf cards

33

Equipment

9

Sagas

4

Lands

36

Average mana value (nonland)

2.63

Colour identity violations

0

That is less than a Commander precon costs, and it is tuned rather than padded. The single most expensive card is Boros Charm at $4.59; drop it and the deck is under $24.

Thirty-three Dwarves, nine Equipment and four Sagas — the company, assembled for $28.36.

The deck’s engine is straightforward. Thorin Oakenshield turns on Storied almost immediately and hands your whole board ward {1}, which blanks a surprising amount of targeted removal at the tables this deck is aimed at. Dáin Ironfoot manufactures Equipment out of nothing and grants double strike to equipped attackers. Balin, Loremaster refills your hand every time a Dwarf lands. Depala, Pilot Exemplar is the anthem and the card-advantage engine at once.

If you want to upgrade later, the two cards worth the money are Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk at $19.09 — a Treasure on every Dwarf plus a scaling anthem — and, if you are feeling wealthy, Dáin of the Ancient Halls at $74.43, who ends games on his own.

The Company — Budget Hobbit Dwarf Commander

100 cards — one click loads the full list into a TCGplayer cart so you can check real prices and grab the whole deck at once.
Buy this deck on TCGplayerAffiliate link — buying through it supports KrakenTheMeta at no extra cost to you.

Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk — the set’s best Dwarf payoff, and it lives on the Eternal sheet at $19.09. Card images and data courtesy of Scryfall; Magic: The Gathering is © Wizards of the Coast.

Should you be annoyed about the missing precons?

Honestly, it depends what you buy Magic for.

If precons are your on-ramp — you like opening a box, shuffling, and playing that night — then yes, this set is a downgrade, and the numbers above make the case. A $50 precon is replaced by a bonus sheet whose commanders median at $10.78.

If you build from singles anyway, the picture is friendlier. The main set’s 48 commanders median at 34 cents, the Dwarf archetype is deep and cheap, and nothing in the format stops you assembling a better deck than a precon for less money — which is exactly what the $28.36 list above is.

What is genuinely lost is the middle path: the player who wanted a Hobbit deck without doing any deckbuilding homework has no product to buy. For that player, the honest recommendation is to pick up a Tales of Middle-earth precon from 2023 instead — they are still Middle-earth, still Commander, and still complete decks.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any Hobbit Commander precons at all?

No. The Hobbit released on 14 August 2026 with no preconstructed Commander decks of any kind.

Will Hobbit Commander decks be released later?

Nothing has been announced. A co-operative product themed around the Battle of Five Armies has been signposted for 2027, but no details are confirmed and it has not been described as a Commander precon.

What is The Hobbit Eternal?

A 158-card Commander-legal bonus sheet accompanying the set, containing 21 new cards and 96 distinct reprints, including 40 borderless Middle-earth Classic box toppers at collector numbers 13–52. Most of it is not Standard or Modern legal.

How many commanders are in The Hobbit?

79 commander-legal cards across the main set and the Eternal sheet — 48 from the main set and 31 from Eternal.

What is the best Hobbit commander?

For raw power, Dáin of the Ancient Halls, who deals damage equal to your Dwarf count to each opponent on every attack. For value, Thorin Oakenshield at 29 cents. For a Dwarf tribal deck with a budget, Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk.

What is the most expensive card in The Hobbit?

Among commanders, Dáin of the Ancient Halls at $74.43, followed by Thranduil the Strategist at $67.59. Prices move constantly — check current numbers before buying.

Is The One Ring legal in Modern in this set?

No. The One Ring appears as a Middle-earth Classic box topper, but it remains banned in Modern. Reprinting a card does not change its ban status.

What does Storied do?

If you control three or more artifacts, legendaries and/or Sagas, you have an enduring story for the rest of the game. Cards with Storied get an extra effect while you have one, and once earned it cannot be turned off.

Can I build a Hobbit Commander deck cheaply?

Yes. The Dwarf tribal deck in this article costs $28.36 at cheapest paper printings — less than a typical Commander precon — and 71 of its 77 unique cards are under a dollar.

Want the deck built for you? Our public deck browser is full of community Commander lists you can copy and tune, and if you would rather describe what you want and let the AI assemble it, the deck builder will draft a full 100-card list around any commander in this article — including the ones that never got a precon.

The Hobbit released with zero Commander precons.
