If you came here looking for the list of The Hobbit Commander precons, here is the answer in one line: there are none.<\/strong> Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit released on 14 August 2026 with no preconstructed Commander decks at all \u2014 the first Middle-earth set to ship without them, and one of only two premier sets in 2026 to skip Commander precons entirely.<\/p>\n\n

That is an unusual decision, and the follow-up questions are the interesting part. What shipped instead? Is it better or worse value? And if you want a Hobbit Commander deck, what do you actually do now?<\/p>\n\n

We pulled every card in the set from the Scryfall API and priced all 79 commander-legal cards to answer those questions with numbers rather than vibes. The short version: the set gives you 79 legal commanders<\/strong>, the replacement product is substantially more expensive than a precon would have been<\/strong>, and you can still build a genuinely fun 100-card Dwarf deck out of the set for $28.36<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The short answer: The Hobbit has zero Commander precons<\/h2>\n\n

Every recent Universes Beyond premier set has been paired with at least one Commander deck. The Hobbit was not. There is no “Thorin’s Company” precon, no “Riddles in the Dark” precon, and no Hobbit Commander deck of any kind on shelves.<\/p>\n\n

You can confirm this structurally: in Magic’s card database, Commander products get their own set code attached to the parent expansion. Lorwyn Eclipsed has one. Secrets of Strixhaven has one. Marvel Super Heroes has one. Reality Fracture and Star Trek have them queued for later in 2026. The Hobbit’s only child products are a token set and a bonus sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A co-operative product set around the Battle of Five Armies has been signposted for 2027, but details have not been announced and it is not a Commander precon replacement in any case. For now, The Hobbit is simply a set without Commander decks.<\/p>\n\n

What “The Hobbit Eternal” actually contains<\/h2>\n\n

The Eternal sheet is the closest thing the set has to a Commander product, so it is worth being precise about what is in it. Across its 158 printings there are 117 distinct card names<\/strong>, and the sheet splits cleanly into three bands by collector number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total the sheet carries 21 new cards<\/strong> and 96 distinct reprints. Critically, the Eternal cards are not<\/em> Standard or Modern legal \u2014 of the 158 printings, 49 are legal only in Commander, Legacy and Vintage. This is a Commander-and-eternal-formats product wearing a bonus-sheet costume.<\/p>\n\n

The box-topper band is where the value sits, and it includes some of the most recognisable cards in the Middle-earth catalogue: The One Ring, Orcish Bowmasters, Tom Bombadil, Delighted Halfling, Sauron, the Dark Lord, And\u00faril, Flame of the West, and the full cycle of legendary lands including The Shire, Rivendell, Minas Tirith and Mount Doom.<\/p>\n\n

One thing to watch if you are a constructed player rather than a Commander player: The One Ring is banned in Modern<\/strong>, and Troll of Khazad-d\u00fbm is banned in Legacy. The median Eternal commander costs 32 times the median main-set commander.<\/strong> Sixteen of the 31 Eternal commanders are over $10, and six are over $25. Buying the Eternal commander lineup outright runs $548.15<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Set that against what a precon is. Recent Commander precons carry a manufacturer’s suggested price in the region of $50 and frequently sell below it, and they arrive as a complete, shuffled-up, ready-to-play 100-card deck with a guaranteed face commander. The Hobbit replaces that with a lottery: the best Hobbit commanders are chase mythics on a bonus sheet, and you either open one or you buy it as a single at market rate.<\/p>\n\n

Tales of Middle-earth in June 2023 did it the traditional way: a main set plus a dedicated Commander product containing four preconstructed decks. Counting every commander-legal card across each release, the difference is clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So The Hobbit is not simply trading precons for a wider commander pool \u2014 it gives you 39% fewer legal commanders than the 2023 Middle-earth set did<\/strong>, and no ready-made decks. If you were hoping the missing precons were compensated for elsewhere, they were not.<\/p>\n\n

The 79 commanders you can actually build with<\/h2>\n\n

The good news is that the main set’s commanders are cheap, plentiful and mostly excellent. Of the 79 commander-legal cards across the set, 47 are mono-coloured, 25 are two-colour, five are three-colour, and there is one four-colour and one five-colour option (Tom Bombadil).<\/p>\n\n

Storied: the new mechanic you need to understand first<\/h2>\n\n

Before you build, learn the set’s headline keyword. Storied<\/strong> reads: “If you control three or more artifacts, legendaries, and\/or Sagas, you have an enduring story for the rest of the game.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Three things make this better than it looks. First, the three permanent types are counted together, so an Equipment, your commander and a Saga is already enough. Second, your commander is itself a legendary permanent, so you begin every game one third of the way there. Third \u2014 and this is the important clause \u2014 once you have<\/em> an enduring story, you have it for the rest of the game<\/strong>. It does not switch off when the board is wiped.<\/p>\n\n

That last point is what makes Storied worth building around rather than around. Turn it on early, then stop worrying about it.<\/p>\n\n

Build this instead: a $28 Dwarf deck<\/h2>\n\n

Here is the practical answer to “there’s no precon”. The Hobbit’s deepest archetype is Dwarves \u2014 the set is built around Thorin’s company \u2014 and the tribal support is almost entirely commons and uncommons. We built a complete 100-card Commander deck to a stated rule: Thorin Oakenshield, plus every Commander-legal Dwarf and Equipment from The Hobbit under $1.50, plus the Boros Dwarf payoffs under $1, plus a standard ramp and removal shell, plus 36 lands.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

That is less than a Commander precon costs, and it is tuned rather than padded. The single most expensive card is Boros Charm at $4.59; drop it and the deck is under $24.<\/p>\n\n

The deck’s engine is straightforward. Thorin Oakenshield turns on Storied almost immediately and hands your whole board ward {1}, which blanks a surprising amount of targeted removal at the tables this deck is aimed at. D\u00e1in Ironfoot manufactures Equipment out of nothing and grants double strike to equipped attackers. Balin, Loremaster refills your hand every time a Dwarf lands. Depala, Pilot Exemplar is the anthem and the card-advantage engine at once.<\/p>\n\n

Should you be annoyed about the missing precons?<\/h2>\n\n

Honestly, it depends what you buy Magic for.<\/p>\n\n

If precons are your on-ramp \u2014 you like opening a box, shuffling, and playing that night \u2014 then yes, this set is a downgrade, and the numbers above make the case. A $50 precon is replaced by a bonus sheet whose commanders median at $10.78.<\/p>\n\n

If you build from singles anyway, the picture is friendlier. The main set’s 48 commanders median at 34 cents, the Dwarf archetype is deep and cheap, and nothing in the format stops you assembling a better deck than a precon for less money \u2014 which is exactly what the $28.36 list above is.<\/p>\n\n

What is genuinely lost is the middle path: the player who wanted a Hobbit deck without doing any deckbuilding homework has no product to buy. For that player, the honest recommendation is to pick up a Tales of Middle-earth precon from 2023 instead \u2014 they are still Middle-earth, still Commander, and still complete decks.<\/p>\n\n
