This one does not. Every number below comes from a Scryfall query run on the day of writing, every ruling is quoted from the official Oracle rulings, and every card in the tables is priced on its cheapest paper printing.

The short version: 34 cards in paper Magic have rebound, all 34 are Commander-legal, and you can buy the complete set for $27.94. Two of them account for over half that. And the mechanic carries a rules trap that quietly makes it anti-synergistic with the graveyard decks most players try to jam it into.

Rebound casts the same card twice from two different zones — and the second cast is where every rules trap lives.

What rebound actually does

Rebound appears only on instants and sorceries. Here is the reminder text, verbatim, from Staggershock:

Rebound (If you cast this spell from your hand, exile it as it resolves. At the beginning of your next upkeep, you may cast this card from exile without paying its mana cost.)

Three things are doing work in that sentence, and players routinely miss all three.

“From your hand.” This is a hard gate, not flavour. Cast the same card off a cascade trigger, out of your graveyard, off the top of your library, or from an opponent’s hand, and rebound does nothing at all. The spell resolves once and goes to the graveyard like any other card.

“Exile it as it resolves.” The card is exiled directly from the stack. It never touches your graveyard on the first cast. This is the trap, and we will come back to it.

“At the beginning of your next upkeep.” Not immediately, and not at end of turn — you wait a full turn cycle. On your next upkeep a delayed triggered ability offers you the free cast. Take it or lose it forever.

So rebound is a delayed, one-shot, free recast, locked behind casting the card from your hand and surviving a full rotation of the table. That is a much narrower window than “you get it twice” suggests, and it explains why the mechanic has never dominated a constructed format.

The seven rules traps, straight from the Oracle rulings

These are quoted or paraphrased directly from the official rulings on rebound cards. Any of the first three will cost you a card at a table that plays fast.

Situation

What actually happens

Your rebound spell gets countered

Rebound never happens. The card goes to your graveyard and you get no second cast.

Your rebound spell fizzles (all targets illegal)

Same — it goes to the graveyard, no rebound.

You copy a rebound spell (Fork, Storm, Twincast)

The copy never rebounds. Copies are not cast from your hand.

You cast it for free from your hand (Maelstrom Archangel, or any “cast without paying its mana cost” effect)

Rebound still works. Paying the cost is irrelevant; the zone is what matters.

The card is a sorcery and it is your upkeep

You may cast it anyway. Timing restrictions based on card type are ignored for the rebound cast.

You decline the rebound cast, or cannot cast it

The card stays exiled for the rest of the game. There is no second chance on a later turn.

Rule of Law, Eidolon of Rhetoric, or a similar restriction is out

Restrictions that are not type-based still apply. Rebound does not bypass them.

And the one that changes deckbuilding: a rebound spell exiled on its first cast never enters your graveyard. The official ruling is explicit — “it isn’t put into your graveyard. Rather, it’s exiled directly from the stack. Effects that care about cards being put into your graveyard won’t do anything.”

That means rebound is actively bad with delirium, with Tarmogoyf-style graveyard counting, with “instant or sorcery in your graveyard” payoffs, and with any recursion package that expects to buy the spell back later. If you are building a graveyard-spells deck, flashback and dredge want that card in the yard. Rebound takes it away from you. The two plans fight.

The second cast is different: cast the card from exile and it goes to your graveyard normally when it resolves. So a rebound spell reaches the graveyard exactly one turn later than an ordinary spell — which is usually one turn too late for the payoff you built around.

Every card with rebound in paper Magic

Thirty-four cards, sorted by the set each one debuted in. Two Modern Horizons cards in 2019 and three in 2021 are the only exceptions in the last decade, and both of those are supplemental sets too.

There is also a four-year, two-month hole in the timeline: nothing between Dragons of Tarkir on 2015-03-27 and Modern Horizons on 2019-06-14. Rebound was, for practical purposes, retired and then quietly revived as a Commander-product mechanic. That is not a coincidence and it is not a curiosity: Pioneer’s card pool begins at Return to Ravnica in 2012, which puts Rise of the Eldrazi (2010) below the cutoff and leaves every later rebound card in a supplemental or Commander product that Pioneer does not accept. One set in, everything else out. The mechanic’s entire Pioneer footprint is a single 2015 expansion.

Nothing with rebound has ever been banned or restricted in any format. Cut those four for any four cheap cantrips and the list comes in at $108.14. Every rebound card in it stays.

Two things to know when you pilot it. First, sequencing: cast your rebound spells on the turn before you need the effect, because the free copy arrives on your upkeep and is therefore available to be used pre-combat. Second, Taigam’s attack rider is checked at cast time, so attack first and cast second — attacking after you have already cast the spell does nothing.

If you would rather have an AI build the shell for you, the public deck gallery has thousands of Commander lists to start from, and you can price any card in this article on the card pricing tool.

Rebound vs. the other “cast it twice” mechanics

Rebound is one of four keywords that give a spell a second life, and they differ in the one dimension that matters — which zone the second cast comes from.

Mechanic

Second cast comes from

Costs mana?

Card reaches your graveyard?

Rebound

Exile, on your next upkeep

No — free

Only after the second cast

Flashback

Your graveyard, any time you could cast it

Yes — a separate cost

Yes, immediately

Unearth

Your graveyard (creatures only)

Yes — a separate cost

Yes, immediately

Cascade

The top of your library, immediately

No — free

N/A — a different card

Rebound is the only one of the four that is free and keeps the card out of your graveyard. That combination is exactly why it is strong in a spells deck and weak in a graveyard deck, and why flash-style instant-speed decks get more from it than sorcery-heavy ones.

Rebound FAQ

How does rebound work in MTG?

If you cast a spell with rebound from your hand, it is exiled as it resolves instead of going to your graveyard. At the beginning of your next upkeep, you may cast it from exile without paying its mana cost. You get one chance; if you decline, the card stays exiled permanently.

Does rebound work if I cast the spell from my graveyard?

No. Rebound only functions when the spell is cast from your hand. Casting it from your graveyard, your library, exile, or an opponent’s hand gives you no rebound at all.

Do I have to pay for the rebound cast?

No. The rebound cast is free — you cast the card from exile without paying its mana cost. You do still have to be able to cast it legally, including choosing legal targets.

What happens if my rebound spell is countered?

Rebound never happens. The spell goes to your graveyard and there is no second cast. The same is true if the spell fizzles because all of its targets became illegal.

Can I cast a rebound sorcery during my upkeep?

Yes. Timing restrictions based on card type are ignored for the rebound cast, so a sorcery can be cast during your upkeep this way. Other restrictions — a Rule of Law effect, for example — still apply.

Does a copy of a rebound spell rebound too?

No. A copy is not cast from your hand, so it never rebounds. Fork effects and storm copies give you the effect but not the delayed second cast.

Does a rebound spell go to my graveyard?

Not on the first cast — it is exiled directly from the stack, so effects that count cards hitting your graveyard see nothing. It does go to the graveyard normally after the rebound cast resolves, one turn later.

How many cards have rebound?

34 in paper Magic, plus one Arena-only card (Unnatural Summons) for 35 across all game formats. All 34 paper cards are instants or sorceries; none is a permanent.

Is rebound legal in Standard?

No. Zero of the 34 rebound cards are Standard-legal, and none has been since Dragons of Tarkir rotated. In Pioneer there are exactly 10, all from Dragons of Tarkir. Modern has 26, Pauper has 14, and Commander, Legacy and Vintage have all 34.

What is the best rebound card?

Ephemerate is the most-played by a wide margin — one mana for two blink triggers across two turns. For raw power, Recurring Insight and World at War are the two that most often end games.

How much does it cost to buy every rebound card?

$27.94 for all 34 on cheapest paper printings at the time of writing. 30 of the 34 are under a dollar; World at War ($10.31) and Ephemerate ($4.55) are 53% of the total.

Is there a card actually named “Rebound”?

Yes, and it does not have rebound. Rebound is an instant from Stronghold, printed in March 1998, that changes the target of a spell targeting a player. It predates the rebound mechanic by 12 years and 1 month. (Watch out for Lurebound Scarecrow too — it contains the letters but has nothing to do with the keyword.)

What is the best commander for a rebound deck?

Taigam, Ojutai Master at $0.67. He grants rebound to every instant and sorcery you cast from hand on a turn he attacked, makes them uncounterable, and his white-blue identity covers 20 of the 34 rebound cards plus all four granters.

Taigam, Ojutai Master — art by Simon Dominic.
