A preparation card has a normal creature printed on the left and a smaller inset frame on the right — the prepare spell — and the creature has some way to become prepared: it enters prepared, or it becomes prepared when it attacks, when you cast your third spell, when a land enters, at your upkeep. While it is prepared you may cast a copy of that spell from exile, paying the spell’s own mana cost, and doing so unprepares the creature. Prepare it again and the spell is back. It debuted in Secrets of Strixhaven in April 2026, and it is one of the returning mechanics in Reality Fracture on 2 October 2026, which has already previewed sixteen more cards.

There are 64 paper cards that print the word as of 16 September 2026: 61 preparation cards and three support cards that prepare or unprepare something else. The number that matters most is a different one. Twenty of the 55 prepare spells are reprints of existing cards, with their mana costs untouched — Lightning Bolt, Swords to Plowshares, Brainstorm, Reanimate, Demonic Tutor, Wheel of Fortune, Channel and Ancestral Recall among them. Four of those originals are on the Reserved List, four are banned in Legacy, five are restricted in Vintage and two are banned in Commander; the cheapest printings of the twenty originals add up to $5,727, and the twenty creatures that carry them cost $36. A copy of Ancestral Recall is castable in Standard today, for {U}, off a five-mana 5/5 flier. This guide covers the rules (prepared is not a keyword ability — it is a designation, and the spell you cast is a copy, which decides a dozen interactions), the reprint table, how all 61 creatures become prepared, the cost table for every spell, legality, prices, what Reality Fracture is doing differently, and a 100-card Tam, Observant Sequencer Commander deck for $77.76 built to re-prepare the whole mechanic. Every card fact was pulled from the live Scryfall database on 16 September 2026 and checked against the Comprehensive Rules of 7 August 2026.

The creature stays on the battlefield; a copy of its spell waits in exile until you cast it.

What prepared actually does

Prepared is not in rule 702, the list of keyword abilities, and that is the first thing to get right about it. Scryfall tags all 64 cards with a “Prepared” keyword, the reminder text reads like a keyword, and it is neither. Rule 722, “Preparation Cards”, defines a card frame and a designation — a marker on a permanent, the way “monstrous” or “renowned” are markers — and everything the mechanic does follows from two subrules:

722.3a Some spells and abilities cause a permanent with a prepare spell to become prepared or state that a permanent enters prepared. If that permanent has the alternative characteristics of a prepare spell, this gives the permanent the “prepared” designation. Prepared is a designation that acts as a marker which rules and effects can identify. A permanent can’t gain this designation unless it has a prepare spell. Additionally, a permanent can’t gain this designation if the permanent already has it.
Comprehensive Rules, effective 7 August 2026

722.3c As a permanent with a prepare spell gains the prepared designation or phases in prepared, its controller creates a copy of that object in exile, except that copy has only the characteristics of that permanent’s prepare spell, ignoring other exceptions to the copying process that apply to that permanent. Those characteristics become the copy’s normal characteristics. This copy remains in exile for as long as the prepared permanent remains on the battlefield and has the prepared designation. This is an exception to rule 704.5e. For as long as the copy remains in exile, the prepared permanent’s controller may cast the copy. That permanent loses the prepared designation at the time the spell becomes cast (see rule 601.2i).
Comprehensive Rules, effective 7 August 2026

Read that as three facts. The creature never leaves. Becoming prepared creates a copy of the spell in exile; the card stays on the battlefield attacking and blocking, and the spell is a separate object that exists only while the creature is on the battlefield and prepared. You cast the copy, with mana, on the spell’s own timing. Fifty-one of the 61 prepare spells are sorceries, so they wait for your main phase with an empty stack; the ten instants (Lightning Bolt, Swords to Plowshares, Ancestral Recall, Brainstorm, Jump, Seething Song, All Aboard, Vandal’s Edit, Ancestral Craving, Bind to Life) go whenever you have priority. The copy is an ordinary spell on the stack: it can be countered, it triggers prowess and magecraft and storm and every “whenever you cast an instant or sorcery” ability — the same rules our prowess guide walks through — and when it resolves it ceases to exist rather than going to a graveyard, because it was never a card. The designation is spent the moment the spell is cast, not when it resolves. Rule 601.2i is the step at which “the spell becomes cast”; if an opponent counters the copy, the creature is already unprepared and there is nothing to cast again until it becomes prepared again. The official ruling on every released preparation card says the same about a spell that fizzles: “since the spell was cast, the associated permanent will still not be prepared.”

It is a copy, not a card — and that decides more than you would think

Because the thing you cast is a copy, none of the tools that care about cards see it. It never goes to your graveyard, so there is no flashback, no Regrowth, no Snapcaster Mage and no Kirol, History Buff trigger for it leaving a graveyard. The preparation card itself is a creature card in every zone (rule 722.4), and the ruling on every card gives the example: Emeritus of Ideation in your graveyard is a blue creature card with mana value 5, not an instant, and cannot be returned by an effect that looks for an instant or sorcery card. Copies of spells normally cease to exist the moment they are anywhere but the stack (rule 704.5e); 722.3c carves the exception that lets the prepare-spell copy sit in exile indefinitely. That exception ends the instant the creature stops being prepared for any reason — casting the copy, or an effect that says “becomes unprepared” — and the copy vanishes with it. The three support cards exploit exactly that: Biblioplex Tomekeeper and the Reality Fracture Aura Infinite Coursework can unprepare an opponent’s creature, which deletes their spell without touching the body.

Two more consequences of “copy”. Casting the copy from exile is not an alternative cost (ruling), so effects that let you cast spells without paying their mana costs can apply to it — Omniscience casts your Wheel of Fortune copy for free — and copying it again with Pigment Wrangler’s Striking Palette works like copying any spell. And rule 722.5 lets a player who has to choose a card name choose a prepare spell’s name: Meddling Mage can name Ancestral Recall, and the ruling says you consider only the alternative characteristics when deciding whether the name is legal to choose.

Once at a time, and who gets to cast it

The last sentence of 722.3a matters at the table: a permanent can’t gain the designation if it already has it. A prepared creature that would become prepared again does nothing — there is never a second copy waiting. The ruling on every card uses Emeritus of Ideation as the example: attack with it while it is still prepared, exile eight cards from your graveyard, and you have paid for nothing. Cast the spell first, then attack. Three Reality Fracture cards (Paradox Shaper, Stingerquill Voxmancer, Woodwork Prodigy) write “if this creature isn’t prepared” into their upkeep trigger, which under the rule is belt and braces: the trigger simply doesn’t fire when there is nothing to do. Only the creature’s current controller may cast the copy, whoever owned the card or controlled it when it became prepared, so a stolen prepared creature hands its spell to the thief. And the designation survives almost everything that happens to the creature: it stays if the creature loses all its abilities, stays if it stops being a creature, and stays if it becomes a copy of something else, even something without a prepare spell. The only things that remove it are casting the copy, an “unprepared” effect, and leaving the battlefield.

Twenty of the spells are reprints — Ancestral Recall included

The mechanic’s headline is the inset frame. Of the 55 distinct spell names on the 61 preparation cards, 20 are existing Magic cards, and in every one of the twenty the prepare spell has exactly the mana cost of the original; 19 have the original’s rules text word for word, and the twentieth (Replenish) drops only a parenthetical reminder. Eleven of the twenty are from Alpha. The five mythic “Emeritus” creatures of Secrets of Strixhaven carry the five most famous cheap Alpha spells in the game — Ancestral Recall, Demonic Tutor, Swords to Plowshares, Lightning Bolt, Regrowth — and the Commander decks add Wheel of Fortune, Channel, Braingeyser and Replenish:

Card

Prepare spell

Original printed

Reserved List

Original in Legacy / Vintage / Commander

Cheapest original

This card

Emeritus of Ideation

Ancestral Recall {U}

Alpha, 1993

Yes

banned / restricted / banned

$4999.95 (2ED)

$5.37

Dirgur Focusmage

Braingeyser {X}{U}{U}

Alpha, 1993

Yes

legal / legal / legal

$16.45 (3ED)

$0.30

Yavimaya Bloomsage

Channel {G}{G}

Alpha, 1993

No

banned / restricted / banned

$0.30 (4ED)

$0.28

Emeritus of Woe

Demonic Tutor {1}{B}

Alpha, 1993

No

banned / restricted / legal

$60.51 (PLST)

$12.04

Encouraging Aviator

Jump {U}

Alpha, 1993

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.04 (M10)

$0.24

Emeritus of Conflict

Lightning Bolt {R}

Alpha, 1993

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.82 (CLB)

$1.53

Cheerful Osteomancer

Raise Dead {B}

Alpha, 1993

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.06 (8ED)

$0.14

Emeritus of Abundance

Regrowth {1}{G}

Alpha, 1993

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.47 (MH1)

$2.69

Infirmary Healer

Stream of Life {X}{G}

Alpha, 1993

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.12 (7ED)

$0.21

Emeritus of Truce

Swords to Plowshares {W}

Alpha, 1993

No

legal / legal / legal

$1.43 (EMA)

$1.30

Naktamun Lorespinner

Wheel of Fortune {2}{R}

Alpha, 1993

Yes

banned / restricted / legal

$395.25 (3ED)

$1.33

Harmonized Trio

Brainstorm {U}

Ice Age, 1995

No

legal / restricted / legal

$1.34 (TLE)

$0.71

Studious First-Year

Rampant Growth {1}{G}

Mirage, 1996

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.36 (FIC)

$0.28

Grave Researcher

Reanimate {B}

Tempest, 1997

No

legal / legal / legal

$7.34 (FIC)

$1.76

Eiganjo Dynastorian

Replenish {3}{W}

Urza’s Destiny, 1999

Yes

legal / legal / legal

$229.48 (UDS)

$0.92

Spellbook Seeker

Careful Study {U}

Odyssey, 2001

No

legal / legal / legal

$2.54 (PLST)

$0.11

Blazing Firesinger

Seething Song {2}{R}

Mirrodin, 2003

No

legal / legal / legal

$9.71 (PLST)

$0.35

Scheming Silvertongue

Sign in Blood {B}{B}

Magic 2010, 2009

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.36 (M13)

$1.15

Stensian Sanguinist

Exsanguinate {X}{B}{B}

Scars of Mirrodin, 2010

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.36 (FIC)

$5.25

Joined Researchers

Secret Rendezvous {1}{W}{W}

Strixhaven: School of Mages, 2021

No

legal / legal / legal

$0.30 (SOC)

$0.37

All twenty

20 spells, 20 identical mana costs

1993 × 11, then 1995–2021

4

4 Legacy-banned, 5 Vintage-restricted, 2 Commander-banned

$5727.19

$36.33

Look at the two right-hand columns. Replenish has two printings in 27 years and costs $229; Eiganjo Dynastorian is 92 cents. The twenty originals together are $5,727.19 and the twenty creatures $36.33. None of this makes the creatures the originals — the copies are sorcery- or instant-speed spells you must earn by preparing the creature, most of them once, and the four Reserved List cards are not being reprinted as cards — but in the formats where the original is banned the distinction is the whole point. Ancestral Recall and Channel are banned as cards in Commander; Emeritus of Ideation and Yavimaya Bloomsage are legal Commander cards, because what is in your deck is a creature card and what you cast is a copy that is not a card. Demonic Tutor and Wheel of Fortune are banned in Legacy; Emeritus of Woe and Naktamun Lorespinner are legal there. And in Standard, thirty-six preparation cards are legal today, fifteen of them carrying a reprinted spell and eight of those spells from Alpha.

The Emeritus cycle, read as a deal

Emeritus of Ideation is a five-mana 5/5 flier with ward {2} that enters prepared: cast it, and with one more blue mana you cast Ancestral Recall, at instant speed. To do it again you attack and exile eight cards from your graveyard. Emeritus of Woe is a four-mana 5/4 that enters prepared with Demonic Tutor, and re-prepares at your end step if two creatures died this turn. Emeritus of Truce prepares Swords to Plowshares on entry only if an opponent controls more creatures than you — after it has given a player a 1/1 flying Inkling, which can be the opponent, to make that true. Emeritus of Conflict prepares Lightning Bolt whenever you cast your third spell in a turn, and the ruling on it is the mechanic’s best trick: the Bolt copy is itself a spell, so casting it as your third spell re-prepares the creature as the trigger resolves — two Bolts from one card in a turn where it starts prepared and you cast two other spells first. Emeritus of Abundance enters prepared with Regrowth and re-prepares on attack once you control eight lands. Five cards, five 1993 spells, all five under $13, all five Standard-legal until the first premier set of 2029.

How the 61 creatures become prepared

A preparation card is only as good as its route to the designation, and the 61 cards use eleven of them. Thirty-four say “enters prepared”, and thirty of those have no way to prepare themselves again — one spell per entry, unless something re-enters them. Thirty-one carry a repeatable route: an upkeep or end-step check with a condition, an attack, a cast trigger, a game event. Four cards have both:

How it becomes prepared

Cards

Examples

Enters prepared (a fresh copy every time it enters — blink and re-cast reset it)

34

Emeritus of Woe, Jadzi, Steward of Fate, Blazing Firesinger, Studious First-Year

Checks a condition at an upkeep, main phase or end step

9

Grave Researcher (three creature cards in your graveyard), Naktamun Lorespinner (a player has one or fewer cards in hand), Yavimaya Bloomsage (a creature with power 7+)

A game event: life gain, tokens entering, combat damage, cards leaving a graveyard, an opponent’s second draw

5

Kirol, History Buff, Leech Collector, Spiritcall Enthusiast, Striding Shotcaller, Defacing Duskmage

Attacks, with a condition to meet

4

Emeritus of Ideation (exile eight cards from your graveyard), Emeritus of Abundance (eight lands), Eiganjo Dynastorian (two or more attackers), Stensian Sanguinist (deathtouch creature connects)

Casting a spell

3

Abigale, Poet Laureate (any creature spell), Emeritus of Conflict (your third spell each turn), Dirgur Focusmage (an instant or sorcery with mana value 5+ from hand)

Every one of your upkeeps, no condition

3

Paradox Shaper, Stingerquill Voxmancer, Woodwork Prodigy (all Reality Fracture)

An enters trigger with a condition

2

Emeritus of Truce (an opponent controls more creatures), Inspired Skypainter (also whenever creature tokens connect)

An activated ability of its own

2

Harmonized Trio (tap it and two other creatures), Lluwen, Exchange Student (exile a creature card from your graveyard)

Attacks, no condition

1

Encouraging Aviator

Every one of your first main phases

1

Scathing Shadelock

Landfall

1

Tam, Observant Sequencer

Routes in total (61 cards; 4 have two)

65

30 cards enter prepared and have no way to re-prepare themselves; 31 carry a repeatable route

The “enters prepared” majority is why the mechanic belongs to blink. A creature that leaves the battlefield and returns is a new object (rule 400.7); if it enters prepared, it enters with a fresh copy of its spell, and its old copy ceased to exist the moment it left. Ghostly Flicker on Emeritus of Ideation and Emeritus of Woe is Ancestral Recall and Demonic Tutor for {2}{U} plus the spells’ own costs, and the same rule powers the whole payoff class in our blink commanders guide. Skycoach Conductor makes the point on its own card: a 2/3 flash flier that enters prepared with All Aboard, a {U} instant that exiles and returns one of your other non-Pilot creatures. Token copies work the same way with one wrinkle. Being prepared is not a copiable value, so a Cackling Counterpart on a prepared creature makes a token that is not prepared — but the token has the prepare spell, and if the creature’s text says “enters prepared”, the token enters prepared with its own copy. The Comprehensive Rules’ own example (722.3c) and the ruling on every card both use a Croaking Counterpart Frog to make a second point: the copy in exile ignores the Frog exceptions, so the spell is still a blue Jump or a red Craft with Pride, not a 1/1 green Frog.

The repeatable routes are where the format decks live. Tam, Observant Sequencer prepares on landfall — every land, including the second and third of a turn — for a {G}{U} draw-a-card. Scathing Shadelock prepares at the start of every first main phase with no condition, and the three Reality Fracture upkeep cards do it at every upkeep. Harmonized Trio prepares Brainstorm by tapping itself and two other creatures, at instant speed, as often as you can untap them. Abigale, Poet Laureate prepares on every creature spell you cast; Dirgur Focusmage on every five-plus-mana instant or sorcery from your hand, which its own cost reduction makes cheaper. The ruling on the cast-trigger cards (Abigale, Dirgur Focusmage, Emeritus of Conflict) is that the trigger resolves before the spell that caused it, and resolves even if that spell is countered.

Emeritus of Ideation enters prepared: a copy of Ancestral Recall, castable for {U}, in Standard.

The spell is cheaper than the creature — the cost table

Yesterday’s exhaust guide measured Reality Fracture’s other returning mechanic and found a mana sink: 22 of 31 exhaust abilities cost more than the card they sit on. All four shared spells have hybrid mana costs, and eleven of the fifteen new spells are hybrid against two in the whole of Secrets of Strixhaven, which is how a white-blue Bird and a mono-blue Human can share the same Peer Review. The hybrid spell is part of the card’s colour identity, though: Semester Foreseer is a mono-blue creature that a mono-blue commander cannot run, and Hallway Heckler is a red creature with a black-red identity. And three cards prepare themselves at every upkeep with no condition (Paradox Shaper, Stingerquill Voxmancer, Woodwork Prodigy) where April’s set had one such card (Scathing Shadelock, at the first main phase); the new set is pushing the mechanic from “one spell on entry” toward “a spell a turn”. Eleven of the fifteen still enter prepared. The one mythic, Bloodline Recollector, is a two-mana 2/2 whose Ancestral Craving is a {B} instant that draws three cards and loses 3 life — the black Ancestral Recall — and it prepares at each end step when three or more creatures died that turn. Soul Tether makes a Heartwood token, the set’s new red-green mana artifact. The ones that come up:

The copy in exile survives state-based actions. Copies of spells outside the stack normally cease to exist at once; a prepare-spell copy created by becoming prepared is the exception, and stays as long as the creature is on the battlefield and prepared.

Casting is what unprepares, not resolving. The designation goes at the moment the spell becomes cast (601.2i). Counter the copy and the creature is spent.

A fizzle spends it too. If the copy has no legal targets when it would resolve, none of its effects happen and the creature is still not prepared.

There is never a second copy. A prepared creature cannot become prepared again until it stops being prepared. Cast, then re-prepare.

Only the current controller casts it, whoever owned the card or controlled it when it was prepared.

The designation survives losing abilities, stopping being a creature, and becoming a copy of something else. Turn a prepared creature into a 3/3 Elk with no abilities and its owner can still cast the spell.

Prepared is not copiable. A copy of a prepared creature is not prepared, but has the prepare spell and can be prepared later; a copy that “enters prepared” enters prepared.

The spell copy ignores copy exceptions on the creature. A Croaking Counterpart Frog token of Goblin Glasswright enters prepared as a 1/1 green Frog; its Craft with Pride is still a red sorcery.

A preparation card is a creature card everywhere. In the graveyard, hand and library it has only its normal characteristics; nothing that looks for an instant or sorcery card finds it.

Casting the copy is not an alternative cost, so effects that cast spells for alternative costs or without paying mana costs may be applied to it.

An “unprepared” effect deletes the copy. Biblioplex Tomekeeper’s second mode and Infinite Coursework remove the designation and the spell with it; on a creature that isn’t prepared they do nothing.

Naming. Meddling Mage and its relatives may name a prepare spell; consider only the alternative characteristics to decide whether the name is appropriate.

Emeritus of Conflict loops. Its Lightning Bolt copy is a spell you cast, so cast as your third spell in a turn it re-prepares the creature when the trigger resolves.

Prepared against adventure, foretell and exhaust

An adventure is the same picture — a creature card with a spell in a side frame — run in the opposite order: you cast the adventure spell from your hand, the card goes to exile, and then you cast the creature from exile. Prepared casts the creature first and the spell is a copy that never leaves exile. Foretell casts a card from exile that you put there yourself and can only cast once; a prepare spell is cast from exile as often as the creature is re-prepared, and is never a card. And exhaust, the mechanic Reality Fracture brings back alongside this one, is an activated ability you may use once per object, which on 22 of its 31 fixed costs costs more than the card; prepared is a spell you may cast once per preparation, which on 30 of its 56 fixed costs costs less. One mechanic taxes you for the repeat; the other rewards you for setting it up.

The deck: Tam, Observant Sequencer, $77.76, built to re-prepare everything

Tam, Observant Sequencer is a four-mana 4/3 Gorgon Wizard in Simic that becomes prepared whenever a land enters under your control, and its Deep Sight is a {G}{U} sorcery: draw a card, gain 1 life. That is a card per land drop, two per fetch-style land, and more with extra land drops, from the command zone. Simic also happens to be where the reprint program is thickest: sixteen of the 46 released preparation cards fit green-blue, and they include Ancestral Recall (Emeritus of Ideation), Regrowth (Emeritus of Abundance), Brainstorm (Harmonized Trio), Careful Study (Spellbook Seeker), Rampant Growth (Studious First-Year), Braingeyser (Dirgur Focusmage), Stream of Life (Infirmary Healer) and Channel (Yavimaya Bloomsage) — the two Commander-banned cards, cast from a $0.28 Dryad and a $5.37 Human. The deck runs all sixteen, both support cards, and then two ways to prepare them again: ten blink and bounce effects for the ten that enter prepared, and four copy effects for the same reason (a Rite of Replication on Emeritus of Woe is not in Simic, but five Emeritus of Ideation tokens each entering prepared are). Eight landfall and land-drop cards feed Tam, nine ramp spells feed everything, and Beast Whisperer draws off the 32 creatures.

Validated against Scryfall on 16 September 2026: 100 cards, Simic identity, every card Commander-legal, 37 lands including Skycoach Waypoint, $77.76 at cheapest ordinary printings. Burgeoning ($33), Exploration ($31), Guardian Project ($15), Dryad of the Ilysian Grove ($11) and Swan Song ($10) were the first draft’s land engine and were swapped for Growth Spiral, Explore, Beast Whisperer, Walking Atlas and Negate; the swaps cost the deck nothing it needs and roughly $90 it did not. Read the support cards before assuming: Deadeye Navigator’s blink has no target, so it works through any of your own creatures’ ward; Phantasmal Image copying a prepared Emeritus is not prepared itself but enters prepared through the copied text; Ramunap Excavator replaying fetch lands from the graveyard is two Deep Sights a turn on its if you think you can pick a commander from its spell alone, our Guess That Commander game has Tam in the pool.

Prepared FAQ

What does prepared mean in MTG?

Prepared is a designation a creature can have if it is a preparation card — a creature with an inset prepare spell. While the creature is prepared, its controller may cast a copy of that spell from exile, paying its mana cost; casting the copy unprepares the creature. It is defined in rule 722 of the Comprehensive Rules, not in the keyword-ability list.

Is prepared a keyword ability?

No. Scryfall tags it as a keyword and the reminder text is written like one, but rule 722 defines it as a designation, like monstrous or renowned. Effects that remove a creature’s abilities do not remove the designation, and the copy of its spell stays in exile.

Does the creature leave the battlefield when I cast its spell?

No. The creature stays on the battlefield the whole time. What you cast is a copy of the spell that was created in exile when the creature became prepared; the creature simply stops being prepared when you cast it.

Can I cast the prepare spell more than once?

Once per preparation. Each time the creature becomes prepared you get one copy to cast; after you cast it, the creature must become prepared again. Thirty-one of the 61 cards have a repeatable route (an attack, an upkeep, a cast trigger, landfall); thirty only enter prepared and need a blink, a bounce or a copy to prepare again.

Is the copy a real spell? Does it trigger prowess and storm?

Yes. It is cast, goes on the stack, can be countered, and triggers every “whenever you cast” ability — prowess, magecraft, storm, Emeritus of Conflict’s own trigger. It is not a card, so it never goes to a graveyard.

If my prepare spell is countered, is my creature still prepared?

No. The creature stops being prepared at the moment the spell becomes cast, before anyone can respond. Countering the copy wastes the preparation; so does the spell fizzling for lack of a legal target.

Is Ancestral Recall really legal in Standard?

The card Ancestral Recall is not. Emeritus of Ideation, a Secrets of Strixhaven mythic whose prepare spell is Ancestral Recall with its original {U} cost and text, is legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander, and casting the copy is legal in all of them. Ancestral Recall and Channel are banned as cards in Commander; the creatures that carry copies of them are legal cards.

Can I blink a creature to prepare it again?

If it says “enters prepared”, yes. A creature that leaves and returns is a new object, and it enters prepared with a fresh copy of its spell; the old copy ceased to exist when it left. Thirty-four of the 61 cards enter prepared.

Do token copies of a preparation card have the prepare spell?

Yes. The existence of the prepare spell is a copiable value, so a Cackling Counterpart or Phantasmal Image copy has it. Being prepared is not copiable, so a copy of a prepared creature is not itself prepared unless its own text says it enters prepared.

Can an opponent stop me casting the copy?

By unpreparing the creature (Biblioplex Tomekeeper’s second mode, Infinite Coursework), which deletes the copy; by removing the creature from the battlefield; by stealing it, since only the current controller may cast the copy; or by naming the spell with an effect like Meddling Mage’s, which the rules allow.

How many prepared cards are there?

Sixty-four paper cards as of 16 September 2026: 61 preparation cards and three support cards. Thirty-eight are in Secrets of Strixhaven (36 preparation cards plus Biblioplex Tomekeeper and Skycoach Waypoint), ten in the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander decks, and sixteen are Reality Fracture previews that become legal on 2 October 2026.

Which prepare spells are reprints of real cards?

Twenty, all with their original mana costs: Ancestral Recall, Braingeyser, Channel, Demonic Tutor, Jump, Lightning Bolt, Raise Dead, Regrowth, Stream of Life, Swords to Plowshares and Wheel of Fortune from Alpha; Brainstorm (Ice Age), Rampant Growth (Mirage), Reanimate (Tempest), Replenish (Urza’s Destiny), Careful Study (Odyssey), Seething Song (Mirrodin), Sign in Blood (Magic 2010), Exsanguinate (Scars of Mirrodin) and Secret Rendezvous (Strixhaven). None of the Reality Fracture previews is a reprint.

When do Secrets of Strixhaven and Reality Fracture rotate out of Standard?

Both rotate with the first premier set of 2029, under the three-year Standard rotation.

Prepared in MTG, measured: the rules (a designation, not a keyword), all 64 cards priced, the 20 prepare
