A red creature with intimidate can only be blocked by red creatures and artifact creatures. A blue-black one can be blocked by anything blue, anything black, and any artifact creature.

We pulled every intimidate card from Scryfall, every deck count from EDHREC, and the colour and card type of every creature legal in Commander to measure how much intimidate dodges. There are 39 cards with intimidate: 23 with the keyword and 16 that give it to other creatures. A one-colour intimidate creature can be blocked by 27.5% to 30.6% of Commander-legal creatures, a bit more than the 19.7% that can block a flier. A two-colour one can be blocked by about half of them. A colourless creature with intimidate can be blocked by only 6.8%: artifact creatures and nothing else.

That last number is the reason to care about a keyword Wizards retired in 2015. This guide covers the rules and timing, how intimidate compares with fear, menace, flying and skulk, every intimidate card ranked by Commander play, the commanders, what intimidate cost on a creature’s stats, why it was replaced, how to beat it, legality in every format, and a $61.06 budget Commander deck that gives intimidate to colourless Eldrazi with Vela the Night-Clad.

What is intimidate in MTG?

Intimidate first appeared on cards in Zendikar in October 2009. It replaced fear, the old black-only version of the same idea, and was itself replaced by menace in Magic Origins in 2015. The Comprehensive Rules still define it:

702.13a Intimidate is an evasion ability.

702.13b A creature with intimidate can’t be blocked except by artifact creatures and/or creatures that share a color with it. (See rule 509, “Declare Blockers Step.”)

702.13c Multiple instances of intimidate on the same creature are redundant.

In plain terms: when your intimidate creature attacks, the defending player looks at their creatures. Any artifact creature can block it. Any creature that shares at least one colour with it can block it. Everything else can’t.

The keyword is symmetrical in a way fear never was. Fear always asked “is the blocker black?”, which was great on black creatures and odd on anything else. Intimidate asks “does the blocker share a colour with the attacker?”, so the same keyword works the same way on a red Boar, a green Wurm or a white Spirit.

Bladetusk Boar, a 3/2 for four from Zendikar (2009) and one of the first creatures printed with intimidate. Art by Sam Burley. Image via Scryfall; © Wizards of the Coast.

How intimidate works: colours, timing and stacking

Colours are checked when blockers are declared

Intimidate looks at the attacker’s current colours and the blockers’ current colours at the moment the defending player declares blockers. Scryfall’s rulings on Bladetusk Boar spell it out: if the Boar has been turned blue, it can be blocked by artifact creatures and/or blue creatures, not red ones. And once it’s blocked, changing its colours doesn’t undo the block. The same goes for the blocker: making a blocking creature stop being an artifact after blocks won’t make your attacker unblocked (Nuka-Nuke Launcher ruling, 2024).

So colour-changing tricks only work before blocks. Cast them in your beginning of combat step or main phase, not after the defender has picked blockers.

Multicoloured creatures are easier to block

A multicoloured creature with intimidate can be blocked by any creature that shares any of its colours. The Hideous Visage ruling gives the example: a white-blue creature with intimidate can be blocked by white creatures and/or blue creatures, no matter what other colours they are. Every extra colour widens the set of possible blockers. That’s why two-colour intimidate creatures are blockable by roughly half of all creatures (see the table below).

Colourless creatures with intimidate

A colourless creature shares a colour with nothing. Give it intimidate and only artifact creatures can block it. This is the one place intimidate is clearly better than flying, and it only happens when another card grants the keyword: no colourless creature was ever printed with intimidate. The three ways to get there are Vela the Night-Clad (gives your whole team intimidate), Executioner’s Hood and Nuka-Nuke Launcher (Equipment). Nim Deathmantle doesn’t work for this: it also turns the creature black.

Intimidate with fear, menace and other evasion

Evasion abilities stack: a creature has to satisfy every blocking restriction at once. A creature with fear and intimidate can only be blocked by an artifact creature or by a creature that is black and shares a colour with it. A creature with intimidate and menace needs two or more blockers, each of which is an artifact creature or shares a colour. Flying plus intimidate needs a blocker with flying or reach that also shares a colour or is an artifact. Two instances of intimidate on one creature do nothing extra.

What intimidate does not do

Intimidate doesn’t stop your creature from blocking, doesn’t protect it from removal and doesn’t care about power or toughness. It only limits who can block it. A 0/8 artifact wall can block any intimidate creature; a black 1/1 can block a black intimidate creature.

How hard is an intimidate creature to block? We counted

We took every creature card legal in Commander (17,852 cards, excluding Un-sets and tokens), recorded its colours and whether it’s an artifact, and counted how many could block an intimidate creature of each colour. Flying is the reference: 3,516 of 17,852 creatures have flying or reach, so 19.7% of creatures can block a flier.

Intimidate creature’s colour

Commander-legal creatures that can block it

Share of all 17,852

Compared with a flier (19.7%)

Colourless

1,216

6.8%

About 2.9× harder to block than a flier

Blue

4,906

27.5%

1.4× as many blockers as a flier

Black

5,160

28.9%

1.5× as many blockers as a flier

Red

5,222

29.3%

1.5× as many blockers as a flier

White

5,350

30.0%

1.5× as many blockers as a flier

Green

5,463

30.6%

1.6× as many blockers as a flier

Blue-black

8,417

47.1%

2.4× as many blockers as a flier

Blue-red

8,501

47.6%

2.4× as many blockers as a flier

White-blue

8,591

48.1%

2.4× as many blockers as a flier

Black-red

8,707

48.8%

2.5× as many blockers as a flier

Blue-green

8,720

48.8%

2.5× as many blockers as a flier

White-black

8,915

49.9%

2.5× as many blockers as a flier

White-red

8,904

49.9%

2.5× as many blockers as a flier

Black-green

9,018

50.5%

2.6× as many blockers as a flier

Red-green

9,010

50.5%

2.6× as many blockers as a flier

White-green

9,121

51.1%

2.6× as many blockers as a flier

Three things stand out:

One colour: about 30%. Mono-blue is the hardest single colour to match (27.5%), green the easiest (30.6%). The spread is small because each colour has roughly the same number of creatures. Since 19.7% of creatures can block a flier, a one-colour intimidate creature is a little easier to block than a flier.

Two colours: about 50%. Every two-colour pair lands between 47.1% (blue-black) and 51.1% (white-green). That’s 2.4 to 2.6 times as many possible blockers as a flier has. A two-colour intimidate creature is barely evasive.

Colourless: 6.8%. Only artifact creatures can block, and there are 1,216 of them among the 17,852. That’s about three times harder to block than a flier.

Our fear guide ran the same count over all 18,361 creature cards printed for paper play, including ones not legal in Commander, and got 7.2% for a colourless attacker and 27.8% to 31.0% for one colour. This guide uses the Commander-legal pool, which is why the numbers differ slightly.

On a black creature, intimidate and fear are the same keyword. Fear lets black creatures and artifact creatures block; intimidate on a black creature lets creatures sharing black (every black creature) and artifact creatures block. Both come to exactly 5,160 possible blockers, 28.9% of the pool. Thirteen of the 23 creatures printed with intimidate are black.

One caveat. These shares count card designs, not what’s actually on the battlefield. In Commander, artifact creatures such as Solemn Simulacrum, Walking Ballista, Thopter tokens and crewed Vehicles are common, and an opponent’s deck is usually one to three colours, not all five. Against a mono-red player, your black intimidate creature can only be blocked by their artifacts. Against a deck that shares your colour, it’s not evasive at all. That swinginess is why Wizards moved on (more below).

Intimidate vs fear, menace, flying and skulk

Keyword

Who can block it

Share of Commander creatures that can block

Still printed?

Intimidate (one colour)

Artifact creatures and creatures sharing its colour

27.5%–30.6%

No: retired in 2015

Intimidate (colourless)

Artifact creatures only

6.8%

No

Fear

Artifact creatures and black creatures

28.9%

No: replaced in 2009

Flying

Creatures with flying or reach

19.7%

Yes, evergreen

Menace

Any two or more creatures together

Any creature, but it takes two

Yes, evergreen

Skulk (1 power)

Creatures with power 1 or less

23.7%

Rarely

Shadow

Only creatures with shadow

0.2%

Rarely

Horsemanship

Only creatures with horsemanship

0.15%

No

The skulk, shadow and horsemanship numbers come from our earlier counts using the same method. Its decks are Zombie sacrifice decks (Gravecrawler, Carrion Feeder, Blood Artist, Ashnod’s Altar), and the undying it gives your non-Humans is the engine. Our Zombie commander guide covers that shell.

Vela the Night-Clad (882 decks) is the real intimidate commander. Every other creature you control has intimidate, and whenever Vela or another creature you control leaves the battlefield, each opponent loses 1 life. EDHREC’s top and high-synergy cards for Vela are colourless Eldrazi: Sire of Stagnation, Deepfathom Skulker, Cultivator Drone, Thought Harvester, Ruination Guide. That’s not a coincidence. Eldrazi with devoid are colourless, so with Vela out they can only be blocked by artifact creatures.

Geth, Lord of the Vault (561 decks) is a mill-and-reanimate commander that uses {X}{B} to steal artifacts and creatures out of graveyards. Its intimidate is a nice extra on a 5/5.

What did intimidate cost? A same-set comparison

Evasion usually costs a creature some stats. We compared the 14 creatures with intimidate in the five sets that printed at least two (Zendikar, Scars of Mirrodin, Innistrad, Dark Ascension and Magic 2014) against the other 525 creatures in those sets, by mana value:

Mana value

Intimidate creatures (n)

Their average P/T

Other creatures in the same sets (n)

Their average P/T

2

3

2.00 / 1.67

111

1.49 / 1.44

3

3

2.00 / 1.33

130

1.84 / 2.26

4

3

2.33 / 1.67

93

2.55 / 2.76

5

2

5.00 / 3.50

84

3.26 / 3.32

6+

3

4.33 / 4.67

60

5.20 / 5.28

All (avg MV 3.93 vs 3.5)

14

3.00 / 2.50

525

2.43 / 2.60

The samples are tiny (two or three intimidate creatures per mana value), so treat this as a direction, not a verdict. At three and four mana, intimidate creatures have about the same power as their neighbours but roughly a point less toughness (2.00/1.33 vs 1.84/2.26 at three; 2.33/1.67 vs 2.55/2.76 at four). The overall average looks higher (3.00/2.50 vs 2.43/2.60) only because the intimidate creatures cost more on average (3.93 vs 3.50 mana). Like shadow and skulk before it, intimidate was paid for in toughness, which suits an attacker that isn’t meant to be blocked.

Why Wizards replaced intimidate with menace

Intimidate lasted six years. Wizards’ stated problem was that it was too swingy: how good it was depended almost entirely on the colours of the opponent’s deck. Against a deck of a different colour with no artifact creatures it was unblockable; against a deck sharing its colour it did nothing. Menace, which arrived in Magic Origins in July 2015, works the same against every deck: the opponent just needs two blockers.

The card pool has since made intimidate weaker. More multicoloured creatures mean more creatures share a colour with any given attacker, and artifact creatures keep coming:

Year

New creature cards

Artifact creatures (block any intimidate creature)

Multicolour creatures (block more colours)

2009 (intimidate debuts)

188

10.1%

33.0%

2011

253

13.8%

7.1%

2013

310

3.5%

22.9%

2015 (replaced by menace)

435

5.3%

8.0%

2018

653

5.8%

16.2%

2020

976

6.4%

15.7%

2022

1,302

14.1%

27.0%

2023

1,589

7.2%

23.4%

2024

1,752

5.8%

25.2%

2025

1,406

8.6%

23.8%

2026

1,704

8.1%

21.5%

In 2015, 8.0% of new creature cards were multicoloured. Every year since 2022 it has been above 20%. Artifact creatures jumped to 14.1% of new creatures in 2022 (the year of The Brothers’ War) and have run at 5.8% to 8.6% since. Neither trend helps an intimidate creature.

Budget Vela the Night-Clad intimidate deck ($61.06)

The deck that gets the most out of intimidate gives it to creatures with no colour. Vela the Night-Clad ({4}{U}{B}) gives every other creature you control intimidate, and 34 of this deck’s 38 creatures are colourless: Eldrazi with devoid (colourless even though their mana costs have blue or black symbols), colourless Eldrazi, and the Eldrazi Scion and Spawn tokens they make. With Vela out, those creatures can only be blocked by artifact creatures, 6.8% of the Commander pool. Every time one of them dies or a token is sacrificed for mana, Vela drains each opponent for 1.

The total is $61.06 at the cheapest printing of each card, checked against Scryfall on 6 October 2026. Every card is legal in Commander and inside Vela’s blue-black colour identity.

Budget Vela the Night-Clad Intimidate Eldrazi — Commander Deck

100 cards — one click loads the full list into a TCGplayer cart so you can check real prices and grab the whole deck at once.
Buy this deck on TCGplayerAffiliate link — buying through it supports KrakenTheMeta at no extra cost to you.

How the deck plays

Early turns: cheap ingest creatures (Salvage Drone, Sludge Crawler, Culling Drone, Benthic Infiltrator, Fathom Feeder) attack and exile the top card of the opponent’s library when they connect. They’re the first two upgrades. Run the list through the deck analyzer for curve and land counts, or the budget swaps tool to cut the price further. A board of Thopter or Servo tokens, Constructs or crewed Vehicles blocks the whole team. When you see an artifact-heavy opponent, attack someone else; Vela’s drain hits every opponent anyway.

How to beat intimidate

Artifact creatures. Any artifact creature can block any intimidate creature. Cheap ones that see play anyway: Solemn Simulacrum, Walking Ballista, Myr tokens, Thopter tokens, crewed Vehicles.

Share the colour. A creature that shares any colour can block. Multicoloured creatures cover more attackers.

Make everything the same colour. Painter’s Servant (itself an artifact creature) makes every permanent the chosen colour in addition to its other colours, so every creature shares a colour with every other one. Intimidate stops doing anything.

Don’t block; remove. Intimidate doesn’t protect against removal or wipes. Your own colourless creatures can’t block a colourless intimidate creature unless they’re artifacts, so answer Vela herself.

Is intimidate legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern and Pauper?

Format

Intimidate cards legal (of 23)

All intimidate cards legal (of 39)

Standard

0

0

Pioneer

9

16

Modern

21

35

Pauper

10

20

Legacy

23

39

Vintage

23

39

Commander

23

39

Historic (Arena)

3

3

Brawl

3

3

No intimidate card is legal in Standard. Nine of the 23 keyword cards are legal in Pioneer and 21 in Modern; the two that aren’t are Vela and Flesh Carver, which were first printed in Commander products. Pauper has ten of the 23 keyword cards and 20 of all 39. Every one of the 39 is legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage, and none is banned or restricted anywhere. On Arena, only Immerwolf, Lifebane Zombie and Cavern Lampad are in Historic and Brawl.

Intimidate FAQ

What does intimidate mean in MTG?

A creature with intimidate can’t be blocked except by artifact creatures and/or creatures that share a colour with it.

Can a colourless creature block a creature with intimidate?

Only if it’s an artifact creature. A colourless non-artifact creature (an Eldrazi, a Scion token) shares no colour with anything, so it can’t block an intimidate creature.

What can block a colourless creature with intimidate?

Only artifact creatures: 1,216 of the 17,852 creature cards legal in Commander, or 6.8%.

Is intimidate the same as fear?

On a black creature, yes: both let black creatures and artifact creatures block. On any other colour they differ. Fear always lets black creatures block; intimidate lets creatures sharing the attacker’s colour block.

Does intimidate stack with fear or menace?

Yes. A blocker has to meet every restriction. With fear and intimidate, it has to be an artifact creature or a creature that’s black and shares a colour. With menace and intimidate, the defender needs two or more blockers that each qualify.

Can I change my creature’s colour after it’s blocked?

You can, but it won’t unblock it. Intimidate is only checked when blockers are declared.

Is intimidate better than flying?

Not on a coloured creature. 19.7% of Commander creatures can block a flier; 27.5% to 30.6% can block a one-colour intimidate creature and about half can block a two-colour one. On a colourless creature, intimidate is better: 6.8%.

Why did Wizards stop printing intimidate?

It was too swingy: unblockable against some decks and useless against others, depending on colours. Menace replaced it in Magic Origins (2015).

What’s the best intimidate commander?

For the keyword itself, Vela the Night-Clad, which gives your whole team intimidate. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed leads more decks (2,174 to 882), but it’s played for undying.

Is any new card being printed with intimidate?

No new creature has had the keyword since Flesh Carver in November 2014. The newest card that grants it is Nuka-Nuke Launcher, from the Fallout Commander decks in March 2024.

Prices and deck counts are from Scryfall and EDHREC on 6 October 2026.
