Wizards of the Coast revealed it on Friday 9 October 2026 at a New York Comic Con panel, and it releases on 9 April 2027. It is the third Marvel expansion, after Marvel’s Spider-Man (September 2025) and Marvel Super Heroes (June 2026). This one leaves the street-level heroes behind for the magical side of the Marvel universe: Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, Dormammu, Scarlet Witch, Moon Knight, Blade and Magik, all built around the Darkhold, Marvel’s book of dark magic.

We checked every revealed card against Scryfall the morning after the panel. Eight new cards are public (plus five basic lands): Hela, Mistress of Darkness with a new spell type called Vengeance, The Darkhold itself, Magik, a doubling commander called Gargantos, the Endbringer, and two new Arcane spells. That last part matters for Commander players with old Kamigawa cards. There are 95 Arcane cards in Magic, and 93 of them were printed in 2004 and 2005. Darkhold Destiny is the biggest return of the Arcane subtype in twenty years.

This guide covers the release date and products, every revealed card with its real Oracle text, how Vengeance works (and what we don’t know yet), what Arcane and Book mean for your existing cards, every Marvel card already printed for these characters, and how Gargantos’s math plays out at a four-player table.

Darkhold Destiny release date and products

Darkhold Destiny is a full expansion with its own Commander product. Scryfall has already created both set pages: MDD for the main set and MDC for Darkhold Destiny Commander, both dated 9 April 2027. You can follow the set on our Darkhold Destiny set page, which updates as cards are revealed.

Announced: Friday 9 October 2026, New York Comic Con

Release date: Friday 9 April 2027

Set codes: MDD (main set), MDC (Commander decks)

Boosters: regular boosters and Collector Boosters

Commander decks: four, named Strange Academy, Gods of Asgard, Midnight Sons and Lords of Hel

Tie-in comic: a new Marvel comic tells the set’s story. One report already lists colour pairs, but it doesn’t fit the one Commander card we can see: Gargantos is black-green and carries the MDC set code, and none of the reported colour sets contains both black and green. Treat any colour list as unconfirmed until Wizards publishes the decklists.

The press release calls it “the first Universes Beyond set created around an original story and setting”. Spider-Man and Super Heroes adapted familiar comics. Darkhold Destiny tells a new story across dozens of Marvel dimensions, with Hela and Dormammu as the villains and Doctor Strange and Thor leading the defence. According to the panel coverage, the five basic lands each show a different realm: Plains are Asgard, Islands the Dream Dimension, Swamps Svartalfheim, Mountains Limbo and Forests Great Britain. Some show the realm at peace and some after the villains have taken it.

Every Darkhold Destiny card revealed so far

These are the eight non-basic cards Scryfall listed the morning after the panel, with their full rules as printed. Do this only once each turn.” It counts any player, so your own life payments count too. Pay 4 life during your turn and you get four Zombies. Hit an opponent for 7 and you get seven.

The other half of the card is Dark Tutor, a three-mana sorcery that finds any card and puts it into your hand or your graveyard, then costs you 3 life. Its type line says “Sorcery — Vengeance”, and the reminder text reads “(Cast only from your graveyard. Then exile it.)” Scryfall stores the card in the same layout it uses for Adventures, so the two halves share one card the way Bonecrusher Giant and Stomp do. The difference: an Adventure is cast from your hand, and a Vengeance spell can’t be.

Dark Tutor can’t trigger Hela. They’re the same physical card, so when you cast Dark Tutor, Hela is in your graveyard, not on the battlefield.

The Darkhold

The Darkhold is a three-mana legendary Book artifact. Tap it: put a sin counter on it, draw a card for each sin counter, then lose 1 life for each card in your hand. The first activation draws one card. The fifth draws five. If you’re holding six cards after the fifth draw, you lose 6 life. The second ability costs {6}{B}{B} and makes every player’s life total equal the lowest one at the table, at sorcery speed. In Commander, at 40 life, that’s a reset button for a player who has been paying life all game.

Magik, Illyana Rasputin // Darkchild, Demon Uncaged

Magik is a three-mana black-red 3/3 that exiles the top card of your library each upkeep and lets you play it that turn. At your end step, if you sacrificed two or more permanents that turn, she can transform into Darkchild, a 4/4 that exiles cards until it hits a nonland card and lets you play all of them, and can pay 4 life to become indestructible (and tap). She is a sacrifice commander with built-in card advantage.

Gargantos, the Endbringer

Gargantos is the only Commander-product card revealed so far (MDC #399). He’s a four-mana black-green Elder God Horror with deathtouch who enters with three +1/+1 counters and doubles them at the start of each of your upkeeps. When he deals combat damage to an opponent, he deals that much damage to each other opponent. Here is what an unanswered Gargantos does in a four-player game:

When

Gargantos size

One unblocked hit in a four-player game

Total damage dealt

Turn it enters

3/3

3 to the defender + 3 to each other opponent

9

Your next upkeep

6/6

6 to the defender + 6 to each other opponent

18

Upkeep 2

12/12

12 to the defender + 12 to each other opponent

36

Upkeep 3

24/24

24 to the defender + 24 to each other opponent

72

He needs one unblocked attack after two of your upkeeps to deal 36 damage. Deathtouch makes chump blocks the only real answer in combat, and a single chump block each turn keeps him from connecting. In practice he’s a removal magnet, and the decks that win with him will be the ones that give him trample or evasion. Anything that doubles counters makes him faster: one Doubling Season on the battlefield when he enters turns three counters into six.

Gargantos, the Endbringer, from Darkhold Destiny Commander. Image via Scryfall; © Wizards of the Coast, © Marvel.

The four smaller cards

Hela’s Arcanum is a five-mana Arcane instant that uses pawprint modes, the cost system from Bloomburrow’s Season cards. You get five pawprints to spend: one for +1/+0 and deathtouch, two to make a creature return to the battlefield when it dies, three to destroy every non-Zombie creature with power 3 or less. Only five cards in Magic used pawprints before this, all of them Bloomburrow Seasons from 2024. Rise from the Nether is a seven-mana Arcane sorcery that makes a 3/1 Mindless-One for each noncreature, nonland card in your graveyard. Penance Stare kills an attacking creature with mana value 3 or less for one white mana. Temple of Khonshu is a white-black dual land that enters untapped if you control a Dimension. No card printed so far has the Dimension type, so Darkhold Destiny introduces it.

How Vengeance works

Vengeance is a spell type, like Adventure, not a keyword ability. The card says three things: you can cast the Vengeance half only from your graveyard, you can’t cast it from your hand, and it’s exiled after it resolves. That puts it closest to aftermath, the Amonkhet split cards whose second half can only be cast from the graveyard. Here is how it compares with every mechanic that lets you cast a card from the graveyard:

Mechanic

Cards

Cast from the graveyard?

Castable from hand?

Afterwards

Vengeance (Darkhold Destiny)

1 revealed

Yes, and only from there

No

Exiled

Flashback

216

Yes, for the flashback cost

Yes

Exiled

Aftermath

27

Second half only

First half only

Exiled

Escape

32

Yes, for the escape cost

Yes

Goes wherever it normally would

Disturb

25

Yes, transformed

Yes (front face)

Exiled if it would go to the graveyard

Retrace

17

Yes, by also discarding a land

Yes

Back to the graveyard

Jump-start

12

Yes, by also discarding a card

Yes

Exiled

Harmonize

11

Yes, for the harmonize cost

Yes

Exiled

That’s a lot of graveyard-casting already in Magic. Our flashback guide covers the biggest group, with 216 cards. Vengeance is new in one way: it’s attached to a creature, so it only becomes castable after the creature has died, been milled or been discarded. Hela wants to be in the graveyard eventually. That pushes Vengeance cards into the self-mill and sacrifice decks that black has always supported.

What we don’t know yet

The set’s rules update hasn’t been published. Two things are open. First, whether a Vengeance card works like an Adventure afterwards. An Adventure goes to exile after it resolves and you can then cast the creature from exile. Dark Tutor’s reminder text says only “then exile it” and gives no permission to cast Hela from exile. Second, how the full set uses Vengeance. One revealed card isn’t a pattern. We’ll update this section when the release notes come out.

Hela as your commander

One interaction already works under today’s Commander rules. Rule 903.9a says that if your commander goes to a graveyard or to exile, you may move it to the command zone. Nothing forces you to. So when Hela dies, you can leave her in the graveyard, cast Dark Tutor from there for three mana, and when Dark Tutor resolves and is exiled, move Hela to the command zone. You’ve tutored any card, and your commander is back in the command zone without paying commander tax for the trip. Commander tax only applies to casting her from the command zone. Expect Hela to be one of the set’s most-built commanders for that reason alone.

Arcane is back: what it means for your old cards

Arcane is a spell subtype from the original Kamigawa block. On its own it does nothing. It matters because of two groups of older cards: spells with splice onto Arcane, which you can reveal from your hand and add to any Arcane spell you cast, and creatures that trigger “whenever you cast a Spirit or Arcane spell”.

Scryfall lists 95 Arcane cards in paper Magic: 67 instants and 28 sorceries. 44 debuted in Champions of Kamigawa (2004) and 49 in Betrayers and Saviors of Kamigawa (2005). Then Wizards stopped. Neon Dynasty, the 2022 return to Kamigawa, printed no new Arcane cards (its Commander decks only reprinted old ones) (see our bushido guide for the other Kamigawa mechanic it dropped). The first new Arcane cards in 21 years came in Marvel Super Heroes in June 2026: Hex Magic and We Say Thee Nay! Darkhold Destiny adds at least two more, and the panel coverage says many of the set’s instants and sorceries carry the Arcane subtype.

Here are the 15 most-played Arcane cards in Commander, by EDHREC rank:

Card

Cost

Type

First printed

Price

EDHREC rank

Kodama's Reach

{2}{G}

Sorcery — Arcane

CHK 2004

$1.77

37

Desperate Ritual

{1}{R}

Instant — Arcane

CHK 2004

$6.45

953

Hex Magic

{2}{R}

Sorcery — Arcane

MSH 2026

$0.55

6,295

Ethereal Haze

{W}

Instant — Arcane

CHK 2004

$1.26

8,540

Otherworldly Journey

{1}{W}

Instant — Arcane

CHK 2004

$0.22

8,721

Disrupting Shoal

{X}{U}{U}

Instant — Arcane

BOK 2005

$16.21

9,519

Ideas Unbound

{U}{U}

Sorcery — Arcane

SOK 2005

$0.32

9,897

Goryo's Vengeance

{1}{B}

Instant — Arcane

BOK 2005

$15.87

11,486

Death Denied

{X}{B}{B}

Instant — Arcane

SOK 2005

$0.26

11,509

We Say Thee Nay!

{1}{U}

Instant — Arcane

MSH 2026

$0.22

12,277

Choice of Damnations

{5}{B}

Sorcery — Arcane

SOK 2005

$22.59

12,473

Lava Spike

{R}

Sorcery — Arcane

CHK 2004

$1.02

12,522

Footsteps of the Goryo

{2}{B}

Sorcery — Arcane

SOK 2005

$1.44

13,515

Reach Through Mists

{U}

Instant — Arcane

CHK 2004

$0.19

13,638

Blazing Shoal

{X}{R}{R}

Instant — Arcane

BOK 2005

$5.14

14,357

Kodama’s Reach is the one that matters. Darkhold Destiny’s main set should follow the same rule and become legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern and Commander on 9 April 2027. Cards printed only in the Commander decks (like Gargantos) are normally legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage but not in Standard, Pioneer or Modern. Wizards confirms format legality with the release notes.

Other Marvel products around the announcement

Wizards announced two smaller Marvel products alongside the set. Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel’s History of Heroes is a 30-card kit illustrated by more than 30 artists, on sale at Secret Lair from 2 November 2026 at 9 a.m. PT for $199.99. A Doctor Doom promo card goes to people who see Avengers: Doomsday in Infinity Vision at Regal Cinemas on opening weekend, and a “Doomsdrop” series of Secret Lairs will mostly feature Doctor Doom.

What to do before April

Darkhold Destiny is six months away, but a few things are worth doing now:

Don’t preorder single cards yet. Prices on cards revealed six months early usually fall once the full set is known.

Check your Kamigawa bulk. Splice cards and Spirit-or-Arcane creatures cost cents today. It was announced on 9 October 2026 at New York Comic Con.

Is Darkhold Destiny the third Marvel set?

Yes. It follows Marvel’s Spider-Man (September 2025) and Marvel Super Heroes (June 2026). It’s the first of three Universes Beyond sets planned for 2027.

What are the Darkhold Destiny Commander decks?

Strange Academy, Gods of Asgard, Midnight Sons and Lords of Hel. Wizards hasn’t confirmed their colours or face commanders yet.

What is Vengeance in MTG?

A spell type on the second half of a card like Hela, Mistress of Darkness. The Vengeance spell can be cast only from your graveyard, and it’s exiled afterwards.

Can you cast Dark Tutor from your hand?

No. Only from your graveyard. From your hand you can only cast Hela herself.

Is Arcane coming back in Magic?

Yes. Darkhold Destiny has at least two new Arcane spells, Hela’s Arcanum and Rise from the Nether, after Marvel Super Heroes printed the first two new ones since 2005.

How many Arcane cards are there?

95 before Darkhold Destiny: 93 from the original Kamigawa block and 2 from Marvel Super Heroes.

Which Marvel characters are in Darkhold Destiny?

Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, Dormammu, Scarlet Witch, Moon Knight, Blade and Magik are confirmed on cards or key art, with more magical heroes and villains expected.

Will Darkhold Destiny be legal in Standard?

The main set is expected to be, like Marvel Super Heroes. Cards that appear only in the Commander decks normally aren’t.

What is The Darkhold card?

A three-mana legendary Book artifact that draws more cards each time you tap it and charges you life for the cards left in your hand. Its second ability sets every player’s life total to the lowest one.

Marvel: Darkhold Destiny releases 9 April 2027.
