One changeling counts for every tribal lord, every “choose a creature type” card and every “whenever you cast a Wizard spell” trigger you will ever play.

Lorwyn Eclipsed (January 2026) brought the mechanic home with 13 new changeling cards, and changelings are now some of the most-played filler in Commander. Changeling Outcast is in 203,420 decks on EDHREC. Maskwood Nexus, which turns all your creatures into changelings, is in 266,710. We counted what a single changeling actually counts for: 324 creature types in the Comprehensive Rules, 91 Commander-legal “choose a creature type” cards and hundreds of cards that name a specific tribe.

This guide covers how changeling works (including the rules most players get wrong), every changeling card ranked by real Commander play, the cards that give a creature every type, the changeling commanders, legality in every format and a $79.82 budget Morophon, the Boundless deck built entirely around Shapeshifters.

What is changeling in MTG?

Changeling is rule 702.73 of the Comprehensive Rules. Rule 702.73a says: “Changeling is a characteristic-defining ability. ‘Changeling’ means ‘This object is every creature type.’ This ability works everywhere, even outside the game.” Every changeling card carries the reminder text “(This card is every creature type.)”

The type line of a changeling card usually just says Shapeshifter. That is flavour. The official rulings are blunt about it: “A creature card with changeling is just as much a Kithkin, a Goblin, a Merfolk, and a Brushwagg as it is a Shapeshifter.” Rule 205.3m lists 324 creature types, from Advisor to Zubera (including Time Lord, the only two-word one), and a changeling has all of them.

Changeling started as the glue for Lorwyn’s tribal block. Lorwyn printed 19 changeling cards and Morningtide 7 more. The mechanic came back in Modern Horizons (10), Kaldheim (10), Bloomburrow, Duskmourn Commander and Lorwyn Eclipsed (13). There are 62 cards with the changeling keyword: 54 creatures and 8 kindred spells and artifacts, like Crib Swap and Nameless Inversion. 34 of them are commons, and 53 cost less than a dollar.

Mirror Entity (Lorwyn): one of the first changelings, still in 154,708 Commander decks. Here is every case, with the source.

Situation

What happens

Source

A changeling in your hand, library or graveyard

It is every creature type there too

CR 702.73a: "works everywhere, even outside the game"

Casting a changeling spell

It is a spell of every type: it triggers "whenever you cast an Elf spell" and gets type-based discounts

Rule 702.73a; rulings on Crib Swap and Formless Genesis

The changeling loses all abilities

It stays every creature type

Ruling: changeling "applies before the effect that removes it"

An effect makes it a new creature type

It becomes only that type (unless the effect says "in addition")

Rulings on Crib Swap and Bloodline Pretender

An effect says it loses all creature types

It has no creature types until the effect ends

Curse of Conformity and Amoeboid Changeling rulings

Shapeshifter on the type line

Flavour only; it is just as much every other type

Ruling on Crib Swap, Bloodline Pretender, Barkform Harvester

Mutavault, Faceless Haven, Maskwood Nexus

All creature types, but not the changeling keyword

Mutavault and Faceless Haven rulings

Kindred instants and sorceries with changeling

Not creatures, but every creature type

Rule 308 (kindred replaced tribal in 2024)

Changeling works in every zone

Because changeling is a characteristic-defining ability, it applies in your hand, your library, your graveyard and on the stack, not just on the battlefield. A changeling in your library is a Goblin card for Goblin Ringleader and an Elf card for Elvish Harbinger. A changeling spell is a Wizard spell, a Dragon spell and a Sliver spell while you cast it, so it triggers Vanquisher’s Banner, Herald’s Horn’s discount and every “whenever you cast a [type] spell” ability. Realmwalker can cast a changeling from the top of your library no matter which type you named.

Losing abilities doesn’t take the types away

This is the ruling people get wrong most often. If a changeling loses all abilities (Humility, Sudden Spoiling, Dress Down), it is still every creature type. The rulings explain why: changeling “applies before the effect that removes it.” Type-changing effects apply in layer 4 and ability-removing effects in layer 6, so the types are already locked in.

Becoming a new type does take them away

The opposite is also true. If an effect makes a changeling a new creature type, without “in addition to its other types”, the new type overwrites everything. Turn to Frog makes it a Frog and nothing else. It still has changeling on it, but the effect wins. Curse of Conformity and Amoeboid Changeling’s second ability (“loses all creature types”) also strip it, and so does Nameless Inversion, which is itself a changeling.

Changeling is not the same as “gains all creature types”

Mutavault, Faceless Haven and Soulstone Sanctuary become creatures with all creature types, and Maskwood Nexus makes your creatures every type. None of them give the changeling keyword. That only matters for the few cards that look for the word (Omni-Changeling’s copy keeps changeling; Maskwood Nexus’s own 2/2 tokens have it, so they stay every type after the Nexus leaves).

Kindred spells with changeling are creature types too

Crib Swap, Nameless Inversion and the Velis Vel instants are kindred spells. They are not creatures, but they have every creature type, so they count for “Elf spell” and “Merfolk card” effects. Rule 308 calls these kindred (the old “tribal” type was renamed in 2024). Crib Swap is also the one changeling card that gives your opponent a changeling: the exiled creature’s controller gets a 1/1 Shapeshifter token with changeling.

What one changeling counts for

The value of changeling is coverage. We searched every Commander-legal card on Scryfall for the tribes most decks are built around. The count is every card whose rules text names that tribe, so it includes lords, token makers and “for each” effects alike. A changeling fits all of them at once.

Tribe

Commander-legal cards that name it

Does a changeling count?

Zombie

296

Yes

Dragon

211

Yes

Goblin

209

Yes

Elf

155

Yes

Sliver

119

Yes

Merfolk

78

Yes

Any type you choose (“choose a creature type”)

91

Yes, whatever you name

“Shares a creature type” checks

30

Yes, with any creature that has a type

Add the 91 “choose a creature type” cards (Cavern of Souls, Herald’s Horn, Vanquisher’s Banner, Kindred Discovery, Urza’s Incubator, Patchwork Banner) and the 30 “shares a creature type” cards, and a changeling slots into almost any typal deck as the 31st or 32nd member of the tribe. Name a creature type as it enters and spells of that type cost {W}{U}{B}{R}{G} less (only the colored part), and your other creatures of that type get +1/+1. Most Morophon decks name a big tribe like Slivers, Dragons or Elves. Naming Shapeshifter turns it into a changeling deck, because every changeling is a Shapeshifter. Omo, Queen of Vesuva and Orvar, the All-Form are popular, but neither is a tribal commander: Omo is a lands and everything-counter deck, and Orvar is a blue copy-your-permanents deck.

Changeling in Lorwyn Eclipsed

Lorwyn Eclipsed (released 23 January 2026) returned to the plane where changelings started. It printed 13 new changeling cards and three more cards that grant every type (Glamer Gifter, Stalactite Dagger and Oko, Lorwyn Liege’s +2). Most are commons built for Limited, but four already see real Commander play:

Chomping Changeling ({2}{G}, 69,372 decks): a 1/2 that destroys an artifact or enchantment when it enters. Any typal deck with green gets a removal spell that also counts for its tribe.

Firdoch Core (55,172 decks): a three-mana changeling mana rock that can become a 4/4. It is an artifact, so it counts for Shapeshifter and every other type even though it isn’t a creature card.

Mutable Explorer (45,606 decks): a 1/1 that comes with a tapped Mutavault token, a land that turns into a 2/2 with all creature types.

Omni-Changeling (31,593 decks): a Clone with convoke that keeps changeling. Copy your best tribal lord and the copy is every type, so it also counts as a member of every other tribe on your board. Our convoke guide explains tapping your creatures to pay for it.

Lorwyn Eclipsed also reprinted Crib Swap, Nameless Inversion and Graveshifter, so all three are Standard-legal again (Taurean Mauler is too, through its Foundations reprint). Its sister mechanic, evoke, is covered in our evoke guide.

Omni-Changeling (Lorwyn Eclipsed): a convoke Clone that keeps changeling. In Standard, the 19 legal changelings are the Lorwyn Eclipsed cards, those reprints and Bloomburrow’s two artifact creatures.

Budget Morophon, the Boundless changeling deck ($79.82)

Morophon naming Shapeshifter is the cleanest way to build around changeling itself. Every changeling is a Shapeshifter, so every one gets +1/+1 and a discount from Morophon, and every “choose a creature type” card in the deck names Shapeshifter and works on all of them. The deck plays 38 Shapeshifter spells, 37 lands and a ramp package to reach Morophon’s seven mana.

What Morophon actually saves you

Morophon’s discount is up to one mana of each colour, and only coloured mana. Most changelings are single-colour cards with one coloured pip, so we worked out what the discount really does to this deck. Across its 38 Shapeshifter spells, Morophon removes 33 coloured mana and drops the average cost from 3.05 to 2.18. More important: 32 of the 38 become payable with any mana at all, and three (Changeling Outcast, Mothdust Changeling and Unsettled Mariner) cost nothing. In a five-colour deck, Morophon is more of a colour fixer than a ramp engine. Hybrid costs count too: the official ruling says you pick which half you pay first, so {1}{R/W} becomes {1}.

Card

Printed cost

Cost with Morophon naming Shapeshifter

Unsettled Mariner

{W}{U}

{0} (free)

Changeling Outcast

{B}

{0} (free)

Mothdust Changeling

{U}

{0} (free)

Amoeboid Changeling

{1}{U}

{1}

Feisty Spikeling

{1}{R/W}

{1}

Impostor of the Sixth Pride

{1}{W}

{1}

Masked Vandal

{1}{G}

{1}

Mischievous Sneakling

{1}{U/B}

{1}

Nameless Inversion

{1}{B}

{1}

Shapesharer

{1}{U}

{1}

Chomping Changeling

{2}{G}

{2}

Crib Swap

{2}{W}

{2}

Flock Impostor

{2}{W}

{2}

Formless Genesis

{2}{G}

{2}

How the deck plays

Early turns are ramp (Farseek, Rampant Growth, Cultivate, Kodama’s Reach, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone) and cheap changelings that carry their own value: Masked Vandal and Chomping Changeling remove artifacts and enchantments, Changeling Wayfinder finds a land, and Taurean Mauler grows on every opponent’s turn. Herald’s Horn, Vanquisher’s Banner, Kindred Discovery and Door of Destinies all name Shapeshifter and turn every changeling into a card draw or a pump. Morophon comes down around turn five or six, and then most of the deck costs one or two generic mana.

The finishers are Mirror Entity (pay eight mana and every creature you control becomes 8/8) and Kindred Dominance. Naming Shapeshifter, Kindred Dominance destroys every creature that isn’t a Shapeshifter: in practice, every opposing creature and none of yours. Maskwood Nexus makes your non-changeling creatures Shapeshifters too, so Metallic Mimic and Adaptive Automaton get the bonus.

Removal is Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Beast Within, Chaos Warp, Generous Gift, Counterspell, Arcane Denial and two changeling instants: Crib Swap and Nameless Inversion, which Morophon also discounts. The manabase is 37 lands: Command Tower, Path of Ancestry (it scries whenever you cast a Shapeshifter, because Morophon is one), Unclaimed Territory and Secluded Courtyard (both name Shapeshifter), ten tri-lands, five Thriving lands, fetch-style lands and Mutavault and Soulstone Sanctuary, which become all creature types.

The decklist

Budget Morophon, the Boundless Changeling - Commander Deck

100 cards — one click loads the full list into a TCGplayer cart so you can check real prices and grab the whole deck at once.
Buy this deck on TCGplayerView it on KrakenTheMetaAffiliate link — buying through it supports KrakenTheMeta at no extra cost to you.

Paste the list into our MTG deck analyzer to check the curve and the colour sources, or look up any card’s price in our card price finder. For a changeling build, the best value is Urza’s Incubator (every Shapeshifter costs two less, on top of Morophon) and Three Tree City, which taps for a mana of one colour for each Shapeshifter you control. Roaming Throne doubles your Shapeshifters’ triggers. Our best budget commanders guide has more cheap five-colour and typal options if you want a second deck.

Changeling rules interactions worth knowing

Cavern of Souls names one type, and a changeling is every type, so Cavern’s uncounterable mana works on any changeling whatever you named.

Kindred Summons and Patriarch’s Bidding count changelings in your library and graveyard, because changeling works in every zone.

Littjara Kinseekers and other “three creatures that share a creature type” checks are easy: a changeling shares a type with any creature that has one.

Shapesharer can turn any of your changelings into a copy of the best creature on the battlefield, because every changeling is a Shapeshifter. The copy loses changeling unless it copies another changeling.

Morphs and face-down creatures have no creature types, so they don’t benefit from changeling effects until turned face up. Our morph guide covers the face-down rules.

Frequently asked questions

What does changeling do in MTG?

A card with changeling is every creature type. It counts as an Elf, a Goblin, a Zombie, a Dragon and every other creature type at the same time, in every zone.

Is a changeling a Shapeshifter?

Yes, and everything else too. The Shapeshifter on the type line is flavour; a changeling is just as much any other creature type as it is a Shapeshifter.

Does changeling work in the graveyard and library?

Yes. Changeling is a characteristic-defining ability that works everywhere, even outside the game, so a changeling card in your graveyard or library is every creature type for effects like Kindred Summons and Patriarch’s Bidding.

If a changeling loses all abilities, is it still every creature type?

Yes. Changeling applies before ability-removing effects, so the creature keeps every creature type even after it loses changeling.

Can a changeling lose its creature types?

Yes, if an effect gives it a new creature type without “in addition”, or says it loses all creature types. Curse of Conformity, Amoeboid Changeling and Nameless Inversion all do this.

Does Mutavault have changeling?

No. Mutavault becomes a 2/2 creature with all creature types until end of turn, which counts for tribal effects, but it doesn’t have the changeling keyword.

What is the best changeling card?

By Commander play, Realmwalker (224,690 decks on EDHREC), then Changeling Outcast and Taurean Mauler. Maskwood Nexus, which makes all your creatures every type, is played even more (266,710 decks).

What is the best changeling commander?

Morophon, the Boundless (16,485 decks as commander on EDHREC). Name Shapeshifter for a changeling deck, or name your favourite tribe and use changelings as extra members.

How many changeling cards are there?

62 cards have the changeling keyword as of October 2026, 13 of them from Lorwyn Eclipsed. Another 14 cards give creatures every creature type without the keyword.

Are changelings legal in Standard?

Yes. 19 changeling cards are Standard-legal, mostly from Lorwyn Eclipsed (its new cards plus reprints of Crib Swap, Nameless Inversion and Graveshifter), along with Taurean Mauler (Foundations) and Bloomburrow’s two artifact creatures.

Changeling in MTG makes a card every creature type.
