Every companion is written as “Companion — [condition]”. If your starting deck meets the condition, you reveal the card before the game, and once per game you can pay {3} to put it into your hand at sorcery speed, then cast it as normal.

There are exactly ten companions, all legendary creatures from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths (April 2020), and Wizards hasn’t printed another since. The mechanic was strong enough that it was changed weeks after release, and companions are still banned in several formats today. In Commander, two of the ten can never be your companion at all.

This guide covers how companion works (with the rules and rulings that matter), the 2020 rule change, all ten companions ranked by Commander play, what each condition costs a Commander deck (we counted the whole card pool), legality in every format, and a budget Arahbo Cats deck with Kaheera as its companion.

What is companion in MTG?

Companion is rule 702.139 of the Comprehensive Rules. Rule 702.139a: “Companion is a keyword ability that functions outside the game. It’s written as ‘Companion—[Condition].’ Before the game begins, you may reveal one card you own from outside the game with a companion ability whose condition is fulfilled by your starting deck.” Once during the game, “any time you have priority and the stack is empty, but only during a main phase of your turn, you may pay {3} and put that card into your hand.”

In practice, a companion is a free extra card you can count on. It doesn’t take a deck slot, it can’t be milled or discarded before you want it, and you always know it’s there. The price is the condition: Lurrus of the Dream-Den wants every permanent card in your deck to cost two or less, Gyruda wants only even mana values, Kaheera wants every creature to be a Cat, Elemental, Nightmare, Dinosaur or Beast, and so on. Whether a companion is worth it comes down to one question: how much does that rule weaken the rest of your deck?

Once the companion is in your hand it’s a normal card. Rule 702.139c says it “remains in the game until the game ends”, so if it’s countered or destroyed it goes to your graveyard like anything else. You don’t get it back.

Yorion, Sky Nomad (Ikoria): the companion that asks for a bigger deck, which is why it can never be your companion in Commander. These are the situations that come up, with the source for each.

Situation

What happens

Source

Choosing a companion

Before the game, reveal one card you own from outside the game whose condition your starting deck meets. Wishes and other “outside the game” effects normally find nothing in Commander, because the format has no sideboard (rule 903.5e). Companion is the exception.

The companion rule change

When Ikoria launched, companions were cast directly from outside the game for their normal cost. That turned each one into an eighth card in your opening hand, and Lurrus and Yorion decks took over competitive play almost overnight. On 1 June 2020, Wizards issued functional errata: instead of casting the companion from outside the game, you now pay {3} to put it into your hand once, at sorcery speed, and cast it from there. The Comprehensive Rules still say “This is a change from previous rules” at the end of 702.139a.

The tax made companions slower, but not weak. Lurrus and Jegantha are still banned in Pioneer and Modern, Yorion in Modern, Lurrus and Zirda in Legacy. The MTG banned list post counts companion as the most-banned keyword in Magic by share.

All 10 companions, ranked

Ranked by the number of Commander decks on EDHREC that list each card. Commander is stricter, because hybrid symbols count both colours for colour identity: Kaheera ({G/W}) needs a commander with both green and white. Jegantha is the odd one out. Its last ability, “{T}: Add {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}”, puts all five colours in its colour identity, so Jegantha can only be the companion of a five-colour commander.

The ten also give back very different amounts once they’re on the battlefield. Lurrus recasts a two-drop permanent from your graveyard every turn. Zirda makes activated abilities cost {2} less and is the engine behind several infinite combos. Gyruda mills four cards from every player and steals the best even-cost creature. Keruga draws a card for each other permanent you control with mana value 3 or more. Kaheera gives your other Cats, Elementals, Nightmares, Dinosaurs and Beasts +1/+1 and vigilance. Obosh doubles damage from odd-costed sources. Umori makes spells of one type cost {1} less. Jegantha taps for one mana of each colour that can’t pay generic costs. Yorion flickers your nonland permanents when it enters. An Arahbo, Roar of the World deck can use Kaheera because Arahbo is a Cat; a Ghave deck can’t, because Ghave is a Fungus.

Colour identity. The companion sits outside your 100 cards, but the format’s rules on mtgcommander.net say it must still follow your commander’s colour identity and the singleton rule. Treat it as a 101st card.

Two companions are off the table. Yorion needs a deck twenty cards over the minimum, and Commander decks are exactly 100 cards (rule 903.5a). Yorion’s own ruling says it “can never be your chosen companion in a Commander game.” Lutri’s condition (every nonland card has a different name) is met by every Commander deck for free, which is why it was banned before Ikoria was even released. Since 9 February 2026, Lutri is legal as your commander or in the 99 but stays banned as a companion; our Commander banned list covers that ruling. Arahbo, Roar of the World is a Cat Avatar, so the commander passes, and all 34 creatures in this list are Cats. Every noncreature card is a normal Selesnya staple: Sol Ring, Signets, Cultivate, Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile all stay in. Kaheera itself adds +1/+1 and vigilance to every other Cat, on top of Arahbo’s eminence pump.

The 99 cost $89.62 at the cheapest ordinary printing on Scryfall (25 October 2026), plus Kaheera at $0.88. Arahbo, Roar of the World has only been printed in foil (Commander 2017’s face card, from $30.48), which brings the whole package to about $121. The deck is validated: 100 cards, singleton, every card green-white and Commander-legal.

The plan: 37 lands and 10 ramp spells get you to Arahbo on turn four or five. From there, Arahbo’s eminence gives a Cat +3/+3 every combat even before it’s cast, and its second ability doubles an attacking Cat’s power for {1}{G}{W}. The anthem layer (Arahbo, the First Fang, King of the Pride, Regal Caracal, Feline Sovereign, Vanquisher’s Banner and Kaheera) turns the token makers (Brimaz, Leonin Warleader, Pride Sovereign, Felidar Retreat, Prideful Parent) into a real army. Card draw comes from Keeper of Fables, Kutzil, Garruk’s Uprising, Vanquisher’s Banner, Herald’s Horn, Harmonize and Return of the Wildspeaker. Overwhelming Stampede and Beastmaster Ascension end games.

Why Kaheera works here. Bring her in on the turn you have {3} spare plus her own three mana, ideally before a big attack: vigilance on the whole team means you swing and still have blockers. Don’t spend six mana on her before Arahbo is out; the commander is the engine, Kaheera is the bonus. One deckbuilding trap from this build: Lost Leonin is a Cat and shows up on EDHREC’s Arahbo page, but it has infect, which does nothing for a deck dealing normal damage, so it was cut for A free extra card is a big edge in a format where both players see the same number of cards. In Commander it’s gentler: one extra card in a 100-card singleton game, behind a {3} tax, is a nice bonus rather than a reason to build a deck.

The rule of thumb that falls out of the counts above: take a companion when your deck already qualifies, and skip it when you’d have to cut staples. Kaheera in a Cat deck, Umori in an all-creature deck and Jegantha in a five-colour deck cost almost nothing. Keruga and Gyruda in an ordinary deck cost you Sol Ring and your cheap interaction, which is a bad trade for one creature you’ll cast on turn six. If you want a free extra card from outside the game in Commander with no deckbuilding cost at all, that’s exactly what the format banned.

If you’re building around the other ways to put two legends at the head of a deck, our partner commanders guide covers partner, Backgrounds and Doctor’s companion (which, despite the name, is a partner ability and not this keyword). Yorion players will find the flicker shell in best blink commanders.

Frequently asked questions

What is a companion in MTG?

A creature with the companion keyword that you can reveal from outside the game before it starts, if your deck meets its condition. Once per game you can pay {3} at sorcery speed to put it into your hand, then cast it normally.

How many companions are there?

Ten, all from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths (2020): Gyruda, Jegantha, Kaheera, Keruga, Lurrus, Lutri, Obosh, Umori, Yorion and Zirda. No new companions have been printed since. “Doctor’s companion” from the Doctor Who cards is a partner ability, not the companion keyword.

How do you use a companion?

Before the game, reveal it from outside the game (your sideboard in tournaments). During any of your main phases with an empty stack, pay {3} to put it into your hand. You can only do that once per game. Then cast it by paying its mana cost.

Can you have a companion in Commander?

Yes, one. It sits outside your 100 cards, your whole deck including your commander must meet its condition, and it must fit your commander’s colour identity. Yorion can’t work (decks are exactly 100 cards) and Lutri is banned as a companion.

Does the commander count for the companion condition?

Yes. Rule 702.139b says that in Commander your starting deck is checked before you set your commander aside, so the commander has to meet the condition too.

Why is Lutri banned in Commander?

Lutri’s condition is that every nonland card has a different name, which every Commander deck already meets, so any blue-red deck got a free card. Since 9 February 2026 Lutri is legal in the 99 or as your commander, but still banned as a companion.

Can Yorion be a companion in Commander?

No. Yorion needs a deck at least 20 cards larger than the minimum, and Commander decks must be exactly 100 cards. You can still run Yorion in the 99 or as your commander.

What happens if my companion dies?

It goes to your graveyard like any other card and stays in the game. You don’t get it back to your companion zone, and you can’t pay {3} again.

Why is Jegantha only usable in five-colour Commander decks?

Its ability “{T}: Add {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}” gives it all five colours in its colour identity, even though it only costs red or green. A companion has to fit your commander’s colour identity, so only five-colour commanders can take it.

What is the best companion?

In competitive 60-card formats, Lurrus, which is why it’s banned in Pioneer, Modern and Legacy. In Commander, Lurrus is also the most-played (55,940 decks on EDHREC), but the best one for your deck is whichever condition you already meet: Kaheera for Cats, Umori for all-creature decks, Gyruda for even-cost clone decks.

Companion in MTG lets one creature start outside your deck.
