Activate only as a sorcery.” You cast the Equipment like any other artifact, it enters the battlefield on its own, and then you pay its equip cost, in your main phase with the stack empty, to put it on one of your creatures. The creature gets whatever the Equipment grants. If the creature dies, the Equipment stays on the battlefield and you can pay to move it again.

Equip arrived with Mirrodin in October 2003, when Lightning Greaves, Mask of Memory and Loxodon Warhammer were all new cards. Scryfall now lists 615 cards with the keyword, and the last six years have each added 48 to 59 more. The part of equip most guides skip is what it costs over a game, so we counted it. Of the 588 Equipment with a plain mana equip cost, 190 are cheaper to equip than to cast, 195 cost the same and 203 cost more. 357 of them (61%) equip for {2} or less, which is why the most played Equipment in Commander are the cheap ones you move every turn.

This guide covers the equip rules (timing, targets, what happens when the creature dies or changes sides), every way to skip or cut the equip cost, the auto-attach keywords living weapon, For Mirrodin! and job select, reconfigure, the most played Equipment and equipment commanders, legality in every format and an $84.96 budget Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER Commander deck with 25 Equipment and nine ways to attach them for free.

What is equip in MTG?

Equip is rule 702.6 of the Comprehensive Rules. Rule 702.6a gives the definition above: equip is an activated ability of Equipment cards, it targets a creature you control, and it can only be activated as a sorcery. Sorcery speed (rule 307.1) means three conditions at once: it’s your turn, it’s one of your main phases, and the stack is empty. You can’t equip in combat, on an opponent’s turn, or in response to a spell.

The rest of how Equipment works lives in rule 301.5, the artifact rules:

Equipment enter unattached (301.5b). Casting Swiftfoot Boots doesn’t put it on anything. You pay {2} to cast it and then {1} to equip it, so a “two-mana” Equipment is really three the first time.

Control of the creature only matters when you equip (301.5b). You can only target your own creature, but if an opponent later steals that creature, the Equipment stays on it and keeps working for them until you pay to move it back.

An Equipment can’t equip more than one creature, and can’t equip itself (301.5c). An Equipment that’s also a creature can’t equip anything unless it has reconfigure.

Only the Equipment’s controller can activate its abilities (301.5d), including the equip ability. Abilities the Equipment grants with “has” belong to the creature’s controller.

Equipment is the artifact cousin of the Aura, and the difference is the whole point of the card type: when an enchanted creature dies, the Aura goes to the graveyard with it; when an equipped creature dies, the Equipment stays (704.5n). That is why Equipment carries voltron decks, and why our best voltron commanders guide leans on it so heavily.

Equip rules: 13 common situations

Situation

What happens

Source

You want to equip during combat or on an opponent’s turn

You can’t. Lightning Greaves gives shroud, so once it’s on your commander you can’t equip anything else to it. Rulings on Greaves spell it out: you can’t simply unequip it, you have to move it to another creature first. Swiftfoot Boots gives hexproof instead, which only stops opponents, so you can keep stacking Equipment on the same creature. Our shroud guide covers the rest of that difference.

How much does equipping cost?

An Equipment has two prices: the mana to cast it once and the mana to equip it every time it moves. We read the equip line on every Equipment on Scryfall on 3 November 2026. 588 have a plain mana equip cost; the other 27 only have a restricted one (Excalibur’s “Equip legendary creature {2}”) or a non-mana cost.

Equip cost

Equipment

Share of 588

Examples

{0}

6

1%

Lightning Greaves, Shuko, Grafted Wargear

{1}

110

19%

Swiftfoot Boots, Skullclamp, Champion’s Helm

{2}

241

41%

Basilisk Collar, Shadowspear, every Sword of X and Y

{3}

149

25%

Loxodon Warhammer, Embercleave, Behemoth Sledge

{4}

53

9%

Hammer of Nazahn, Blade of Selves, Hero’s Blade

{5} or more

29

5%

Batterskull {5}, Helm of the Host {5}, Kaldra Compleat {7}, Colossus Hammer {8}

Set the equip cost against the cast cost and the split is almost exactly even: 190 Equipment (32%) are cheaper to equip than to cast, 195 (33%) cost the same and 203 (35%) cost more. The design logic is easy to read once you see it. Cheap, flexible effects (haste, hexproof, a card on death) have low equip costs so you can move them every turn. Huge stat boosts are cheap to cast and expensive to equip, so you pay for them over time. Colossus Hammer is the extreme case: one mana to cast, eight to equip, for +10/+10.

This is also why equip decks are about mana efficiency more than raw power. A deck that has to pay full price for every move falls behind; a deck that cheats the cost (next section) gets to treat Colossus Hammer as a one-mana +10/+10.

Colossus Hammer (Core Set 2020; this art from Forgotten Realms Commander): one mana to cast, eight to equip, +10/+10. They fall into three groups: cards that make equipping cheaper, cards that let you skip the equip ability entirely, and the very rare cards that change its timing.

Card

What it does to equipping

Group

Puresteel Paladin

Equipment you control have equip {0} while you control three or more artifacts, and it draws a card when an Equipment enters

Free equip

Bruenor Battlehammer

Pay {0} instead of the equip cost of the first equip ability you activate each turn; +2/+0 per attached Equipment

Free equip

Forge Anew

First equip each turn is free, equip at instant speed during your turn, and it returns an Equipment from your graveyard

Free equip + timing

Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale

Equipment you control have equip Knight {0}

Free equip

Astor, Bearer of Blades

Equipment you control have equip {1}, so Colossus Hammer costs 1 to move

Cheaper equip

Fighter Class

Tutors an Equipment, then level 2 makes equip abilities cost {2} less

Cheaper equip

Auriok Steelshaper

Equip costs you pay cost {1} less

Cheaper equip

Hammer of Nazahn

Whenever an Equipment you control enters, you may attach it to a creature for free

Skip equip

Sigarda’s Aid

Equipment have flash, and each one that enters may attach to a creature you control

Skip equip

Armory Automaton

Attaches any number of Equipment to itself when it enters or attacks

Skip equip

Brass Squire

{T}: attach an Equipment you control to a creature you control

Skip equip

Balan, Wandering Knight

{1}{W}: attach all Equipment you control to Balan

Skip equip

Leonin Shikari

You may activate equip abilities any time you could cast an instant

Timing

Two facts from the census are worth knowing. First, only two cards in the game let you equip at instant speed: Leonin Shikari and Forge Anew (and Forge Anew only during your turn). Everything else that moves Equipment at odd times does it by attaching, not equipping. Second, attaching is far more common than people think: about 57 Equipment attach themselves to a creature when they enter (Mithril Coat, Embercleave, Maul of the Skyclaves, Cliffhaven Kitesail), and another 40 cards attach Equipment as an effect. None of those pay the equip cost, and none of them care whether it’s your main phase.

The equip variants are a smaller group. “Equip legendary creature” appears on Blackblade Reforged ({3} instead of {7}), Brotherhood Regalia, Wrecking Ball Arm and Excalibur, Sword of Eden; Commander’s Plate has “Equip commander {3}”; Steelclaw Lance has “Equip Knight {1}”; and Luxior, Giada’s Gift has “Equip planeswalker {1}”, which turns a planeswalker into a creature. Rule 702.6c says the restriction only applies to that ability: Blackblade can still move to a nonlegendary creature by paying {7}, or for free with Hammer of Nazahn.

Living weapon, For Mirrodin! and job select

Three keywords solve the oldest Equipment problem, that an Equipment does nothing on an empty board. Each one makes a creature token when the Equipment enters and attaches the Equipment to it for free. They are triggered abilities, not equip abilities.

Keyword

Token

Rule

Commander-legal cards

Most played

Living weapon

0/0 black Phyrexian Germ

702.92a

19

Nettlecyst, Kaldra Compleat, Bitterthorn, Batterskull

For Mirrodin!

2/2 red Rebel

702.163a

13

Hexplate Wallbreaker, Glimmer Lens, Bladehold War-Whip

Job select

1/1 colorless Hero

702.182a

19

Black Mage’s Rod, Dancer’s Chakrams, Machinist’s Arsenal

Reconfigure

None. A reconfigure card is an artifact creature with the Equipment subtype. Rule 702.151a gives it two abilities, both sorcery speed: pay the cost to attach it to another creature you control, or pay it again to unattach it. While it’s attached, it stops being a creature (702.151b), so it dodges creature removal and wraths; when the creature it’s on dies, it becomes unattached and is a creature again.

Reconfigure cards don’t have the equip keyword, which matters for cost reducers: Fighter Class, Auriok Steelshaper and Bruenor’s free first equip only touch equip abilities, and reconfigure isn’t one. The Reality Chip (play lands and cast spells from the top of your library while attached) is the most played reconfigure card in Commander, in 145,581 decks, and because it’s a legendary creature, it can also be your commander.

Lizard Blades (Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty): a 1/1 double striker that can reconfigure for {2} onto another creature and give it double strike instead. When it enters, it attaches an Equipment you control to itself for free. Whenever it attacks, you draw a card for each equipped attacking creature, and if Cloud has power 7 or more, you make two Treasures. Every Equipment you play is card draw, and the big ones are ramp.

25 Equipment. Protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Darksteel Plate, Whispersilk Cloak), power (Colossus Hammer, Blackblade Reforged, Wrecking Ball Arm, Hero’s Blade, Behemoth Sledge, Loxodon Warhammer), card draw (Skullclamp, Mask of Memory) and utility (Sword of the Animist, Sunforger, Conqueror’s Flail, Trailblazer’s Boots). Wrecking Ball Arm sets Cloud’s base power to 7 by itself, and Colossus Hammer takes it to 14.

Nine ways to attach without the equip ability. Cloud, Hammer of Nazahn, Armory Automaton, Brass Squire, Balan, Barret (attaches to a Rebel each combat), Raubahn (attaches to an attacker), Zack Fair and Hero’s Blade, which attaches to each of the deck’s 14 legendary creatures as it enters.

Cheaper equipping. Puresteel Paladin (equip {0} with three artifacts; the deck runs 33), Bruenor and Forge Anew (first equip free), Astor (equip {1} for everything) and Bladehold War-Whip. Danitha Capashen and Cid cut the cast cost too. The 25 Equipment cost 61 mana to equip once each at printed cost; with Astor out it’s 24, and with Puresteel it’s 0.

Card draw on top of Cloud. Sram (cast an Equipment, draw), Puresteel Paladin (an Equipment enters, draw), Akiri (attack with an equipped creature, draw) and Skullclamp.

Ramp and removal. Twelve ramp pieces (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, three Talismans, Fellwar Stone, Cultivate, Kodama’s Reach, Rampant Growth, Nature’s Lore, Farseek, Three Visits); Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Dispatch, Chaos Warp, Beast Within and Generous Gift for removal. Sunforger can unattach to cast Swords, Path, Dispatch, Chaos Warp, Generous Gift or Boros Charm for free.

Two traps we checked before listing. Lightning Greaves gives shroud, so don’t put it on Cloud if you want to equip more to Cloud later; use Swiftfoot Boots there and move Greaves to a creature that just needs haste, or unattach it with Akiri for {W}. And Hero’s Blade’s free attach only works for legendary creatures, which is 14 of the deck’s 18. Activate only as a sorcery” (rule 702.6a). You pay it to put an Equipment on one of your creatures.

Can you equip at instant speed?

Not normally. Equip is sorcery speed. Only two cards change that: Leonin Shikari (any time you could cast an instant) and Forge Anew (instant speed during your turn).

Can you equip an opponent’s creature?

No. Equip targets a creature you control. Bloodthirsty Blade is the one Equipment with a separate ability that attaches it to an opponent’s creature to goad it.

What happens to Equipment when the creature dies?

It stays on the battlefield, unattached (rule 704.5n). You can pay the equip cost to attach it to another creature.

Can you equip a creature with shroud or hexproof?

Hexproof, yes: it only stops opponents. Shroud, no: equip targets, and shroud stops all targeting, including yours.

Can you move Equipment to a different creature?

Yes. Pay the equip cost again at sorcery speed and it moves. There’s no limit on how many times per turn.

Does equip use the stack?

Yes. It’s an activated ability, so opponents can respond, and if the target is gone when it resolves, nothing happens.

What is living weapon in MTG?

When the Equipment enters, you create a 0/0 black Phyrexian Germ token and attach the Equipment to it (rule 702.92a). If you move the Equipment, the Germ dies.

What does reconfigure do?

Reconfigure lets an Equipment creature attach to another creature you control, or unattach, at sorcery speed (rule 702.151a). While attached, it isn’t a creature.

Is Equipment legal in Commander?

Yes. 624 Equipment cards are Commander legal on 3 November 2026 and none are banned. Three Equipment cards can lead a deck: The Reality Chip, a legendary Equipment creature, and Toralf, God of Fury and Halvar, God of Battle, double-faced gods whose back faces are Equipment.

Equip in MTG attaches an Equipment to a creature you control at sorcery speed.
