Best Dwarf Commanders in MTG: All 49 Ranked + a $132 Typal Deck (2026)

For thirty-one years, Dwarf typal in Magic was a joke you told at the kitchen table. Then The Hobbit landed on 14 August 2026 and printed 21 new legendary Dwarves in a single day — 43% of every Dwarf that has ever been able to sit in the command zone.

This guide is the full accounting. There are exactly 49 legendary Dwarf creatures in paper Magic, every one of them Commander-legal, and the count below was derived twice from two different Scryfall queries that agreed exactly. You get the ranked shortlist, the complete roster with cheapest-printing prices, every card in the game that actually cares about Dwarves, and a 100-card decklist that costs $131.92.

Dwarf decks finally have the card pool to match the flavour.

How many Dwarf commanders are there in MTG?

49. Every legendary creature with the Dwarf creature type in paper Magic is legal as a Commander, and there are 49 of them as of 2026-08-30.

That number is worth pausing on, because 28 of them existed before The Hobbit and 21 arrived with it. Magic printed its first two legendary Dwarves in Homelands in 1995 and then averaged well under one a year for the next three decades. The Hobbit printed more Dwarf legends in one day than the whole 2021–2025 stretch managed between them (21 against 20).

The practical consequence: almost every “best Dwarf commander” list written before August 2026 is now describing a card pool that is 43% smaller than the one you can actually build from. If you are here because your Hobbit commander shortlist pointed you at Dwarves specifically, this is the page that finishes the job.

The best Dwarf commanders in MTG, ranked

Ranked by how efficiently each one converts a board of Dwarves into a win — not by raw power level, and deliberately not by EDHREC popularity, which as you will see measures something else entirely. The EDHREC column is Scryfall’s card-popularity rank across all of Commander; lower means more played.

CommanderMana costColour identityCheapest paper printingEDHREC card rankWhy it is here
Magda, Brazen Outlaw{1}{R}R$10.20#1,246Anthem, Treasure engine and tutor on a two-mana body. Still the format’s best Dwarf.
Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk{3}{R}{W}RW$16.65#13,108A Treasure on every Dwarf that enters, and an anthem that scales with those Treasures.
Depala, Pilot Exemplar{1}{R}{W}RW$0.30#11,147The original Dwarf lord — the only one that gives +1/+1 rather than +1/+0, and it digs.
Giott, King of the Dwarves{R}{W}RW$0.14#11,287Two mana, double strike, and a rummage on every Dwarf or Equipment. The budget pick.
Fíli the Pathfinder{3}{W}W$0.35#12,820Turns every nontoken Dwarf into two bodies, then anthems the whole board once Storied is on.

Sram, Senior Edificer{1}{W}W$1.65#448The highest-ranked Dwarf legend on EDHREC. Also does nothing for Dwarves.

1. Magda, Brazen Outlaw — {1}{R}, $10.20

Magda does three jobs on a two-mana 2/1: Other Dwarves you control get +1/+0, whenever a Dwarf you control becomes tapped, create a Treasure token, and sacrifice five Treasures: search your library for an artifact or Dragon card, put that card onto the battlefield.

The second line is the one that matters and the one most people misread. It triggers on becoming tapped, not on attacking — so tap-for-mana effects, crewing Vehicles and convoke all turn your board into Treasures. The third line is an uncounterable tutor that puts a permanent directly onto the battlefield, which is why Magda has been the Dwarf commander for five years despite being a two-mana mono-red 2/1 with no evasion.

She is also the most expensive of the cheap options at $10.20, which is a reprint problem rather than a power problem — Kaldheim rares that hold a combo deck together do not get cheaper.

2. Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk — {3}{R}{W}, $16.65

Thorin, King of Durin's Folk — legendary Dwarf Noble from The Hobbit Eternal
Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk — art by Dmitry Burmak. Card image via Scryfall; Magic: The Gathering is © Wizards of the Coast.

The new default for a go-wide Dwarf deck. Whenever Thorin or another Dwarf you control enters, create a Treasure token pairs with other Dwarves you control get +1/+0 for each artifact token you control, so every Dwarf you play makes the rest of the board bigger — twice over, since the Treasure it creates is itself an artifact token feeding the anthem.

Two things to be clear about. First, the anthem counts artifact tokens, not artifacts, so Sol Ring and your signets do nothing for it; Treasures, Clues, Food and Construct tokens do. Second, Thorin is from The Hobbit Eternal, the 158-card bonus sheet that shipped inside Hobbit boosters — not from a Commander precon. There were no Hobbit Commander precons, which is a subject we covered in detail when we went looking for them in the Hobbit precon guide.

3. Depala, Pilot Exemplar — {1}{R}{W}, $0.30

The 2016 original, and still the only Dwarf lord in the game that gives +1/+1 rather than +1/+0. Her tap ability — pay {X}, reveal the top X cards, keep every Dwarf and Vehicle — is real card advantage in a deck that is 37 Dwarves deep, and she costs $0.30.

Depala also drags Vehicles into the conversation, which is not a coincidence: Kaladesh built its Dwarves as pilots, and the Vehicle sub-theme is the only reason to run her over Thorin if you already own both.

4. Giott, King of the Dwarves — {R}{W}, $0.14

At $0.14 this is the cheapest functional Dwarf commander in Magic. Double strike on a two-mana body, and a loot trigger on every Dwarf or Equipment that enters — discard a card, draw a card. It does not build your board, but it keeps your hand live through the long middle turns where Dwarf decks usually run out of gas.

5–8. The Hobbit’s own Dwarf payoffs

A dwarven war-king in gold-inlaid armour standing atop a treasure hoard, ranks of dwarf warriors behind him
Five of the eight commanders at the top of this list are less than a month old.

Fíli the Pathfinder ({3}{W}, $0.35) creates a 2/2 red Dwarf token whenever Fíli or another nontoken Dwarf you control enters, and anthems your whole board for +1/+1 once you have an enduring story. That nontoken clause is load-bearing — the tokens it makes do not trigger it again.

Kíli the Resourceful ({1}{W}, $1.21) draws a card whenever another Dwarf or Equipment enters, but only once each turn. Read that line before you build around it; it is a steady one-per-turn engine, not a storm payoff.

Dáin of the Ancient Halls ({3}{R}{W}, $73.55) has vigilance, haste, and deals damage equal to your Dwarf count to each opponent whenever it attacks. It is the most powerful card on this page and, at $73.55 for a single mythic printing, the one most likely to stay out of your deck.

Balin, Loremaster ({3}{R}{R}, $0.32) discards your hand and draws that many on every Dwarf, and burns each opponent for the same number once you are Storied. Mono-red, thirty-two cents, and genuinely strong in a deck that empties its hand by turn five anyway.

The trap: the most-played Dwarf legends do not care about Dwarves

Here is the finding that should change how you read every other list on this topic. Sort all 165 Dwarf cards in Magic by how often they are actually played, and the top of the list looks like this:

  • Storm-Kiln Artist (#203)
  • Sram, Senior Edificer (#448)
  • Torbran, Thane of Red Fell (#999)
  • Tataru Taru (#1147)
  • Magda, Brazen Outlaw (#1246)
  • Magda, the Hoardmaster (#2009)

The single most-played Dwarf card in Commander is Storm-Kiln Artist — not a legend at all, and played almost exclusively in Storm and spellslinger decks that contain no other Dwarf. Sram, Senior Edificer draws on Auras, Equipment and Vehicles. Torbran, Thane of Red Fell adds 2 to red damage. Neither contains the word “Dwarf” in its rules text.

So “best Dwarf commander” splits into two genuinely different questions. If you want the strongest deck that happens to be led by a Dwarf, build Sram Voltron or Torbran burn and never play a second Dwarf. If you want a deck where the creature type does work, you are choosing from a much shorter list — and until August 2026 that list had two cards on it.

Every card in Magic that supports Dwarves

33 cards in paper Magic reference Dwarves in their rules text. 14 of them — 42% — come from The Hobbit. The other 19 were printed across the previous thirty-two years.

Two caveats on how this list was built, because they change the number. Reminder text was stripped before matching, so a card whose only mention of Dwarves is on a token it creates does not count. And the match is on whole words: a naive substring search picks up “Dwarven Hammer” and “Dwarven Mine” by name alone, which is why every clause below was read individually rather than trusted from the query.

The wider pool is healthier than the payoff list suggests: there are 165 Dwarf cards in paper Magic overall, 26 of them from The Hobbit. You will not struggle to fill 37 slots. You will struggle to find cards that reward you for it.

A complete Dwarf typal deck: Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk ($131.92)

A lone dwarf warrior silhouetted against a towering wall of gold ingots and treasure chests
Every Dwarf that enters makes a Treasure; every Treasure makes the rest of the board bigger.

37 Dwarves, 35 lands, average mana value 2.71, and $131.92 at cheapest paper printing. Every card was checked against Scryfall for colour identity and Commander legality before this list was published — the first draft contained three colour-identity violations that the check caught.

The plan is unsubtle. Deploy cheap Dwarves, collect a Treasure for each one, and let Thorin’s anthem turn a board of 2/2s into a lethal attack two turns earlier than the table expects. Fíli the Pathfinder and Dwarven Shortsword add token Dwarves that still trigger Thorin; Shared Animosity and Vanquisher’s Banner convert width into damage; Dwarven Recruiter stacks the top of your library with exactly what you need.

What to cut, and what to add

The deck deliberately skips the three cards everyone will tell you to run. Coat of Arms is symmetrical and this deck plays into a lot of token boards. Smothering Tithe is a fine card and roughly a quarter of the deck’s total price on its own. Blasphemous Act was cut in testing for the obvious reason: you are the player with the most creatures.

If you have the budget, the three highest-impact additions are Dáin of the Ancient Halls ($73.55), Cadric, Soul Kindler ($16.92) to copy your legendary Dwarves, and a real dual-land manabase. If you are cutting to go cheaper, the Hobbit commons — Óin the Brave, Dori, Bearer of Friends, Ori, Keeper of Songs — are all under a quarter and are in the list purely as Thorin triggers.

Not sure where a Dwarf deck lands on the power scale? The typal build above is a straightforward mid-power deck; our guide to the Commander bracket system covers where that sits, and if you would rather start from a shell that is already tuned, the best budget commanders list has cheaper entry points.

Frequently asked questions

How many legendary Dwarves are in MTG?

49, all of them legal as Commanders. 28 existed before The Hobbit and 21 were printed in it.

What is the best Dwarf commander?

Magda, Brazen Outlaw for power, Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk for a go-wide Dwarf board, and Giott, King of the Dwarves at $0.14 if you are building on a budget. If you only want the strongest deck led by a Dwarf and do not care about the creature type, that is Sram, Senior Edificer or Torbran, Thane of Red Fell.

Are there Dwarf Commander precon decks?

No. The Hobbit shipped no Commander preconstructed decks at all, so there is no Dwarf precon to buy. Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk comes from The Hobbit Eternal, the bonus sheet inside Hobbit boosters.

Is Dwarf typal actually good now?

It is playable in a way it was not before. The card pool went from 19 Dwarf-referencing cards to 33 in one release, and the number of Dwarf lords went from two to three. It is a solid mid-power archetype, not a cEDH contender.

Which Dwarf commander is cheapest?

Giott, King of the Dwarves at $0.14, Koll, the Forgemaster at $0.17, Amber Gristle O’Maul at $0.17, Nori, Teller of Tales at $0.17 — in that order, on a cheapest-paper-printing basis.

What colours are Dwarf decks?

Overwhelmingly red-white. 38 of the 49 legendary Dwarves — 78% — are mono-red, mono-white or Boros: 17 mono-red, 13 Boros, 8 mono-white. The remaining 11 scatter across nine other identities, including two mono-black (Balthor the Defiled, Irini Sengir), one mono-blue (Reveka, Wizard Savant) and one Gruul (Gimli, Mournful Avenger). If you are building Dwarf typal, you are building Boros.

Does Storm-Kiln Artist count as a Dwarf?

Yes — it is a Dwarf Artificer, and it is the most-played Dwarf card in Commander. It is not legendary, so it cannot be your commander, and the decks that play it almost never play a second Dwarf.

What tutors for Dwarf cards?

Only Dwarven Recruiter. It puts any number of Dwarf cards on top of your library rather than into your hand, so it is a setup card, not a finisher.

Do Dwarf tokens trigger Dwarf commanders?

Usually yes, with one important exception. Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk triggers on any Dwarf entering, tokens included. Fíli the Pathfinder specifies nontoken Dwarves, so the 2/2s it makes do not trigger it again.
