Three Magic bloodthirst cards side by side over blurred dark art: Furyborn Hellkite, Indoraptor, the Perfect Hybrid and Bloodlord of Vaasgoth

MTG Bloodthirst Explained: How Bloodthirst Works, All 24 Bloodthirst Cards and a $96 Indoraptor Deck (2026)

Bloodthirst is a Magic: The Gathering keyword that rewards you for hitting an opponent before you cast a creature. If any opponent was dealt damage earlier in the turn, a creature with bloodthirst enters the battlefield with extra +1/+1 counters. Gorehorn Minotaurs is a 3/3 for four mana on a quiet turn and a 5/5 for four mana after you’ve attacked. Furyborn Hellkite goes from a 6/6 flyer to a 12/12 flyer.

Bloodthirst was the Gruul clan’s mechanic in Guildpact (February 2006), showed up once more in Future Sight, came back as a red, green and black mechanic in Magic 2012, and then went quiet for twelve years. Two cards brought it back: Indoraptor, the Perfect Hybrid (Jurassic World Collection, 2023) has bloodthirst X, and Twins of Discord (Modern Horizons 3 Commander, 2024) gives bloodthirst 2 to every other colourless creature you control. Twins is in 23,082 Commander decks on EDHREC, more than any other bloodthirst card, and Indoraptor is the only bloodthirst creature that can be your commander.

This guide covers how bloodthirst works (with the actual rules text), the situations that catch people out, why drain effects like Blood Artist don’t turn it on, what bloodthirst X is worth in a four-player game, all 24 bloodthirst cards, legality in every format and a $96 Indoraptor Commander deck built to hit first and cast second.

What is bloodthirst in MTG?

Bloodthirst is rule 702.54 of the Comprehensive Rules. Rule 702.54a: “Bloodthirst is a static ability. ‘Bloodthirst N’ means ‘If an opponent was dealt damage this turn, this permanent enters with N +1/+1 counters on it.'”

The reminder text on the cards says the same thing. Four details in the rules text matter in real games:

  • It checks damage, not life loss. The condition is that an opponent “was dealt damage”. Losing life from a drain or paying life is not damage, so it doesn’t count. This is the most common bloodthirst mistake and it gets its own section below.
  • Any opponent, any source, any time this turn. The damage doesn’t have to come from you or from a creature, and it doesn’t have to be combat damage. An opponent who taps their own painland for coloured mana has been dealt damage, and your bloodthirst creatures notice.
  • It only checks as the creature enters. Bloodthirst is an “enters with” replacement effect (rule 614.1c). Damage dealt after the creature is already on the battlefield doesn’t add counters, so the order you do things in each turn matters.
  • Bloodthirst X counts all the damage. Rule 702.54b: “‘Bloodthirst X’ means ‘This permanent enters with X +1/+1 counters on it, where X is the total damage your opponents have been dealt this turn.'” In Commander that total adds up across every opponent at the table.

Rule 702.54c adds that multiple instances of bloodthirst each apply separately. A creature with bloodthirst 1 that also gets bloodthirst 3 from Bloodlord of Vaasgoth enters with four counters.

How bloodthirst works: every situation that matters

Nearly every bloodthirst question comes down to two things: was an opponent actually dealt damage, and had that happened before the creature entered? This table covers the cases that come up in real games.

SituationDoes bloodthirst turn on?Rule
You attacked and a creature dealt combat damage to an opponent, then you cast the bloodthirst creature in your second main phaseYes. This is the normal way to use it.702.54a
An opponent lost life to a drain (Blood Artist, Gray Merchant, Exsanguinate)No. Life loss is not damage.119.3, 702.54a
An opponent paid life (shockland, fetchland, Snuff Out)No. Paying life is not damage.119.4
An opponent tapped their own painland or Talisman for coloured manaYes. Those deal damage to their controller, and any opponent being dealt damage by any source counts.702.54a
Only you were dealt damage (Flame Rift, Spear Spewer hit you too)Only if an opponent was hit as well. Damage to you doesn’t count.702.54a
You damaged an opponent’s planeswalker or battleNo. That damage was dealt to the permanent, not the player.120.3c, 120.3h
The damage was prevented (Fog, protection)No. Prevented damage is never dealt.615.1
An infect creature hit an opponentYes. Infect damage is still damage, even though it gives poison counters instead of life loss.120.3b
The creature is reanimated, flickered or put onto the battlefield without being castYes. “Enters with” applies however it enters.614.1c
A token copy of a bloodthirst creature is createdYes. The copy has bloodthirst as it enters, so it gets the counters.614.12
The creature entered first, then damage was dealtNo. Bloodthirst checks only as the creature enters. It never adds counters later.614.1c
Impact Tremors pings everyone when the creature entersNot for that creature: the trigger resolves after it is already on the battlefield. The next creature you cast that turn gets its counters.614.1c, 603.2
The creature has bloodthirst twice (own keyword plus Bloodlord or Twins)Both apply. Bloodrage Vampire with Bloodlord of Vaasgoth enters with four counters.702.54c
Bloodthirst X with three opponents hit for 2 eachX is 6: the total damage dealt to all your opponents this turn, from any source.702.54b

Two rulings narrow the granted versions. Bloodlord of Vaasgoth only gives bloodthirst 3 to Vampire creature spells you cast, so a Vampire you reanimate or a Vampire token doesn’t get it. Twins of Discord has no such limit: its bloodthirst 2 is a static ability on every other colourless creature you control, and continuous effects that already exist apply as a creature enters (rule 614.12), so a colourless creature put onto the battlefield any way gets the counters.

Bloodthirst vs spectacle vs raid: damage, life loss or just attacking

Three mechanics reward you for being aggressive earlier in the turn, and they check three different things. Getting them mixed up is how players cast a bloodthirst creature after a Blood Artist trigger and wonder where the counters went.

MechanicWhat it checksDrain (Blood Artist) counts?Infect hit counts?Attack that was blocked counts?
BloodthirstAn opponent was dealt damage this turnNoYes (damage was dealt)No
SpectacleAn opponent lost life this turnYesNo (no life was lost)No
RaidYou attacked this turnNot neededNot neededYes

Damage to a player causes life loss (rule 120.3a), so anything that turns on bloodthirst also turns on spectacle and every “if an opponent lost life this turn” card, apart from infect hits. It doesn’t work the other way round. We counted the Commander-legal cards on Scryfall: 267 cards make each opponent lose life without dealing damage, including Zulaport Cutthroat, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Exsanguinate, Bontu’s Monument and The Meathook Massacre. None of them turns on bloodthirst.

Raid is the easiest of the three. Blocked attackers, attacks on planeswalkers and attacks that deal no damage all count. Bloodthirst needs the damage to reach a player. That’s why so many bloodthirst creatures have evasion of their own: Duskhunter Bat flies, Stormblood Berserker has menace, Lurking Crocodile has islandwalk and Battering Wurm and Skarrgan Pit-Skulk stop smaller creatures from blocking them.

Turning bloodthirst on: the enablers in numbers

We counted the Commander-legal pool on Scryfall (17,920 paper creatures, plus every other card type) to see how many cards can deal that first point of damage before your main phase ends. The counts are cards, not printings.

Type of enablerCardsExamples
Deals damage to each opponent227Guttersnipe, Impact Tremors, Boltwave, Zhur-Taa Druid
Deals damage to any target (can hit a player)682Lightning Bolt, Skewer the Critics, Fling
Tap to deal 1 damage to any target, repeatable65Prodigal Pyromancer, Cunning Sparkmage, Viridian Longbow
Creatures with haste at mana value 2 or less131 (111 red)Loyal Apprentice, Gingerbrute, Ruby, Daring Tracker
Creatures with flying at mana value 2 or less469Duskhunter Bat, Selfless Spirit
Creatures that can’t be blocked at mana value 2 or less131Changeling Outcast, Silent Hallcreeper
Creatures with menace at mana value 2 or less85Stormblood Berserker, Stormfist Crusader
Each opponent loses life (no damage): does NOT enable267Zulaport Cutthroat, Gray Merchant, Exsanguinate

The numbers explain why bloodthirst has always been a red mechanic first: 111 of the 131 cheap haste creatures are red, and so are most of the each-opponent burn effects. Black’s version of “hurt the opponent” is mostly life loss, which is why the four black bloodthirst creatures need a red or evasive partner to work reliably.

Only two other cards in Commander check the same “an opponent was dealt damage this turn” condition: War Elemental and Skarrgan Firebird, whose return ability does. The looser “an opponent lost life this turn” condition shows up on 19 cards, Rakdos, Lord of Riots among them.

Bloodthirst X in Commander: why multiplayer breaks it

Fixed bloodthirst (1, 2, 3, 6) only cares whether an opponent was hit. Bloodthirst X adds up the damage dealt to all of them. In a four-player game every “each opponent” effect counts three times. Here is what X comes to if you resolve the enabler before you cast Indoraptor or Petrified Wood-Kin, with three opponents still on 40 life:

What you resolve firstX in a 1v1 gameX in a 4-player game
Tap Zhur-Taa Druid or Thermo-Alchemist once13
Guttersnipe on the battlefield, cast one instant or sorcery26
Boltwave (3 damage to each opponent)39
Earthquake for X = 339
Activate Pestilence three times39
Flame Rift (4 damage to each player)412
Chandra’s Ignition with a 5-power creature515
Heartless Hidetsugu, opponents on 40 / 40 / 402060
Heartless Hidetsugu, opponents on 30 / 22 / 151533

Indoraptor’s ruling confirms that X counts damage from every source, not just yours, so an opponent’s combat against another opponent adds to it too. And because Indoraptor is a commander, it re-counts every time you recast it from the command zone. The commander tax goes up by two each time, but on a turn after Boltwave or a big attack it comes back much bigger than it left.

Twins of Discord does the same multiplying for colourless decks in a different way: it hands bloodthirst 2 to every other colourless creature, so one early hit makes every Eldrazi or artifact creature you cast afterwards that turn two counters bigger. Like any static “gives each creature” effect, it stacks with each creature’s own bloodthirst (Twins’ ruling gives the example of bloodthirst 1 becoming three counters).

Every bloodthirst card, ranked by Commander play

There are 24 bloodthirst cards: 23 with the keyword and Twins of Discord, which grants it. Bloodlord of Vaasgoth both has bloodthirst and grants it. Eleven come from Guildpact, ten from Magic 2012, and one each from Future Sight, the Jurassic World Collection and Modern Horizons 3 Commander. They’re all creatures, and all red, green, black or colourless. The table is sorted by the number of Commander decks on EDHREC that play each card; prices are the cheapest regular paper printing on Scryfall on 27 October 2026.

Most of the old bloodthirst creatures are fair, cheap commons that were built for Limited. The ones that still pull their weight in Commander are the ones with a second job. Twins of Discord stops every creature of one mana-value parity (odd or even, your choice) from blocking each time you attack. Bloodlord of Vaasgoth makes every Vampire you cast three counters bigger on any turn you’ve hit someone. Skarrgan Firebird comes back to your hand for three red mana whenever an opponent has been damaged that turn, so it’s a recurring 6/6 flyer in a deck that pings every turn. Furyborn Hellkite is the biggest number on the list: seven mana for a 12/12 flyer if anything hit an opponent first.

The only bloodthirst commander: Indoraptor, the Perfect Hybrid

Indoraptor is the one legendary bloodthirst creature. It costs {1}{B/G}{R}, so its colour identity is Jund (black, red and green), and it reads: “Bloodthirst X. Menace. Enrage — Whenever Indoraptor is dealt damage, choose an opponent at random. Indoraptor deals damage equal to its power to that player unless they sacrifice a nontoken creature of their choice.” It leads 12,083 decks on EDHREC.

Printed it’s a 3/1, which dies to any ping. The whole point is to never cast it as a 3/1. Damage the table first, then cast it, and it enters as a 9/1 or a 15/1 with counters, which also means it survives the next ping. From then on every point of damage it takes triggers enrage, and enrage hits a random opponent for its full power unless they give up a real creature. Each of those hits adds to the damage your opponents have been dealt this turn, which feeds any other bloodthirst creature you cast afterwards.

The plan writes itself: symmetrical damage effects like Pestilence, Plague Spitter and Volcanic Fallout do three jobs at once. They turn on bloodthirst, they trigger Indoraptor’s enrage, and they trigger every other enrage Dinosaur on your side. Indoraptor is a Dinosaur Mutant, so it also counts for Dinosaur payoffs like Wrathful Raptors, and our Dinosaur Commander deck guide covers the wider tribe.

Budget Indoraptor deck: $96 of Jund bloodthirst

This is a 100-card Indoraptor list priced at $96.30, using the cheapest regular paper printing of every card on Scryfall on 27 October 2026. Indoraptor itself is $23.52 of that. We checked the list against Scryfall: 100 cards, singleton apart from basics, every card inside Jund colours and legal in Commander.

It’s built from the most-played cards on Indoraptor’s EDHREC page, with the expensive ones swapped out. Spitting Dilophosaurus ($25.81), Mithril Coat ($24.43), Pyrohemia ($13.42), Heroic Intervention ($13.05) and Descent into Avernus ($11.99) were all in the first draft. Crypt Rats replaces Pyrohemia as the black-mana wipe that hits players, Tamiyo’s Safekeeping replaces Heroic Intervention, and Raging Regisaur replaces the Dilophosaurus. We also left out Marauding Raptor even though half of Indoraptor decks play it: it deals 2 damage to each creature you cast, which kills this deck’s own Zhur-Taa Druid, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Crypt Rats and Spear Spewer.

How the deck plays

  • Hit first, cast second. Spend your first main phase and combat on damage: Zhur-Taa Druid and Thermo-Alchemist ping every opponent, Hellrider adds a point per attacker, Boltwave or Flame Rift does it at sorcery speed, and Rakdos Charm’s third mode makes each opponent’s creatures damage their own controller. Cast Indoraptor and the five bloodthirst creatures (Furyborn Hellkite, Skarrgan Firebird, Carnage Wurm, Gorehorn Minotaurs, Stormblood Berserker) afterwards.
  • Then hurt everything. Pestilence, Crypt Rats, Plague Spitter, Volcanic Fallout and Earthquake all damage Indoraptor, and each instance of damage is a separate enrage trigger. Ripjaw Raptor draws, Ranging Raptors ramps, Needletooth Raptor removes a creature and Silverclad Ferocidons makes each opponent sacrifice a permanent.
  • Turn damage taken into damage dealt. Wrathful Raptors, Brash Taunter, Pain for All and Fiendlash all deal more damage whenever the creature they care about is dealt damage. Rite of Passage puts a +1/+1 counter on Indoraptor every time it’s damaged, so it grows instead of shrinking.
  • Keep the commander alive. Tamiyo’s Safekeeping makes Indoraptor indestructible for a turn, which lets you activate Pestilence as many times as you have black mana. Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves give it haste, and Rhythm of the Wild gives it riot.

The cost is your own board. Pestilence and Plague Spitter kill your X/1s along with everyone else’s, and Heartless Hidetsugu halves your life as well as theirs. Play the small mana creatures early, and save the big symmetrical effects for the turn you’re ready to win.

Bloodthirst FAQ

Does Blood Artist turn on bloodthirst?

No. Blood Artist makes a player lose life; it doesn’t deal damage. Bloodthirst only checks whether an opponent was dealt damage. The same goes for Zulaport Cutthroat, Gray Merchant of Asphodel and every other “loses life” effect.

Does the damage have to come from me?

No. Any source counts, including another opponent’s creature, a spell, or an opponent’s own painland. Only damage to you doesn’t count.

Does combat damage to a planeswalker count?

No. Damage to a planeswalker or a battle is dealt to that permanent, not to its controller.

Do I get the counters if I flicker or reanimate a bloodthirst creature?

Yes. Bloodthirst is an “enters with” effect, so it applies however the creature enters, as long as an opponent was dealt damage earlier that turn. The exception is the bloodthirst Bloodlord of Vaasgoth grants, which only applies to Vampire spells you cast.

Can bloodthirst add counters after the creature is on the battlefield?

No. It only checks once, as the creature enters. A creature you cast in your first main phase and then attack with doesn’t get counters when its combat damage lands.

How does bloodthirst X work in multiplayer?

X is the total damage dealt to all your opponents this turn. If Boltwave hits three opponents for 3 each, X is 9.

Do two instances of bloodthirst stack?

Yes. Each one applies separately (rule 702.54c). Bloodrage Vampire (bloodthirst 1) cast with Bloodlord of Vaasgoth out enters with four counters.

Does infect damage count?

Yes. A creature with infect still deals damage to the player; it just gives poison counters instead of life loss. That’s damage dealt, so bloodthirst turns on. Spectacle doesn’t, because no life was lost.

What’s the best bloodthirst card?

For Commander, Twins of Discord is the most played (23,082 decks on EDHREC) and Indoraptor is the only commander. For raw stats, Furyborn Hellkite enters as a 12/12 flyer.

Is bloodthirst still printed?

Rarely. The last cards with the keyword were Indoraptor in 2023, and Twins of Discord granted it in 2024. Before that, nothing new since Magic 2012.

Bloodthirst sits with the other “be aggressive first” mechanics. Riot lets a creature choose between a +1/+1 counter and haste as it enters, and Rhythm of the Wild hands riot to the whole Indoraptor deck. Haste is how you get the first hit in on the same turn, and wither is the other old keyword that changes what a creature’s counters do. For more ways to deal that first point, see our best burn cards.
