MTG Star Trek: Release Date, Shockland Reprints, Mechanics, and Every Card Revealed (2026)

Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek releases on November 13, 2026, and Wizards of the Coast pulled the covers off it during a First Look stream on July 14, 2026. The headline for most players isn’t Kirk, Picard, or the Borg — it’s the ten shock lands sitting quietly in the set list.

This is a full, Standard-legal Universes Beyond expansion (set code TRK), not a Commander-only side product. It comes with Play Boosters, four Commander precons, a new ability word, a returning mechanic, and a shock land reprint that fixes a problem Standard has had since last August.

Here’s everything confirmed so far — every card in this article is verified against Scryfall’s live set data, not spoiler-season rumor.

MTG Star Trek release date and products

Star Trek launches November 13, 2026, and preorders are already open through local game stores, TCGplayer, and Amazon. Three set codes ship together: TRK (the main 61-card expansion), TRC (the Commander cards), and SDS (“Stardates,” a bonus sheet).

Collector Boosters also carry something Magic has never done at this scale: seven different signed cards featuring Star Trek actors, at roughly 250 copies of each, seeded randomly. Those will be lottery-ticket rare — treat them as a bonus, not a reason to buy a case.

The real story: all ten shock lands are back — and their rotation finally syncs

This is the part that actually moves Standard, and it’s more interesting than “shock lands are getting reprinted.”

Shock lands have been trickling back into Standard staggered, five at a time. Five of them (Stomping Ground, Watery Grave, Sacred Foundry, Godless Shrine, Breeding Pool) arrived in Edge of Eternities on August 1, 2025. The other five (Blood Crypt, Steam Vents, Temple Garden, Overgrown Tomb, Hallowed Fountain) landed in Lorwyn Eclipsed on January 23, 2026.

That split is a real problem. A card’s Standard clock resets to its most recent printing, so the Edge of Eternities five were scheduled to rotate out of Standard months before the Lorwyn Eclipsed five — meaning Standard would spend a stretch with half a shock land cycle. Half a cycle is a warped format: Rakdos and Azorius decks keep their untapped duals while Gruul and Dimir lose theirs, purely by printing accident.

Printing all ten in Star Trek resets every shock land’s rotation clock to November 2026 simultaneously, ending the stagger. The full cycle now lives and dies together.

All ten are confirmed on Scryfall as Standard, Pioneer, Modern, and Commander legal in their TRK printing:

Steam VentsBlue/RedLorwyn Eclipsed (Jan 2026)

There’s a collector angle too: every shock land also gets an LCARS-frame alternate art — full-art, textless versions styled after the Starfleet computer interface. Wizards has never printed textless shock lands before.

If you’re building an EDH mana base and want to know where shock lands actually rank against fetches, fast lands, and the rest, we broke the whole hierarchy down in our guide to the best lands for Commander.

Star Trek’s mechanics: one new ability word, one returning fan-favorite

Star Trek runs four named mechanics. Two things worth getting right here, because the coverage has been sloppy about it:

Federation (new)

An ability word that rewards creature-type diversity. Hoshi Sato, Exolinguist reads: “Federation — When Hoshi Sato enters, look at the top X cards of your library, where X is the number of creature types among non-Borg creatures you control.”

Note the wording — non-Borg. That’s not flavor text; it’s the set’s central design tension, and it’s clever.

Assimilate (new)

The Borg’s mechanic, and the counterweight to Federation. From Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest: “assimilate target creature card from an opponent’s graveyard. (Put it onto the battlefield under your control with a +1/+1 counter. It’s a Borg artifact creature and loses all other creature types.)

Read those two together and the design snaps into focus. Federation counts creature types. Assimilate destroys creature types. The Borg literally erase the diversity the Federation is rewarded for — mechanically, not just thematically. You are being pushed to pick a side, and a deck that tries to do both actively fights itself. That’s the best kind of Universes Beyond design: the flavor is the rules text.

Face a Dilemma (new)

A trigger condition on modal spells. Seven of Nine shows the template: “Whenever you face a dilemma, draw a card. (You face a dilemma as you choose one or more modes for a spell or ability.)” Modal-matters as an archetype — expect charms, commands, and Kirk-style “choose one” creatures to be the payoff engines.

Spacecraft and Station (returning — not new)

You’ll see outlets calling Spacecraft/Station a new Star Trek mechanic. It isn’t. Station debuted in Edge of Eternities in August 2025, and there are already 29 Spacecraft cards in the game outside of Star Trek. Star Trek is bringing it back — which honestly makes more sense than inventing something new, since a Star Trek set without functioning starships would be absurd.

U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class is the showcase: a {3} Legendary Artifact — Spacecraft with “Station (Tap another creature you control: Put charge counters equal to its power on this Spacecraft. Station only as a sorcery. It’s an artifact creature at 7+.)” At 7+ charge counters it becomes a 4/5 with flying and vigilance, and whenever charge counters land on it for the first time each turn, you exile the top card of your library and may play it that turn.

The four Commander precons

Star Trek ships four Commander decks at $74.99 each (or $159.99 for Collector’s Editions with surge foils):

  • Federation Fleet — the Federation ability word and Spacecraft, almost certainly built around Captain Kirk, Boldly Going.
  • Landing Party — creature-type-matters, the other half of the Federation plan.
  • Klingon Fury — red-based aggression; Klingon Strike Force ({3}{R}{R}) is confirmed.
  • We Are the Borg — Assimilate and artifact creatures, headlined by Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest.

If you’ve never built a Commander deck from a precon before, our step-by-step Commander deck guide walks through the upgrade path, and our best budget commanders guide covers cheap decks that punch above their price.

A few precon-adjacent notes for deckbuilders: Janeway is a landfall commander in everything but name (extra land drops plus explore). Dr. Crusher is a genuine lifegain payoff — doubling lifegain triggers is exactly the “sources must feed payoffs” engine that archetype lives on. And Spock is about as clean a card draw engine as blue gets: vigilance plus a tap-to-draw means he attacks and still draws.

Shock lands worth buying before November

Here’s the honest read: a ten-shock-land reprint at Play Booster rarity means prices are likely to soften after November 13. If you need shock lands for a Standard or Pioneer deck right now, these are the current cheapest printings — but if you can wait, waiting is probably correct.

CardCheapest print todayWhy you’d want it
Hallowed Fountain~$7Azorius control’s untapped dual
Blood Crypt~$9Rakdos aggro and midrange staple
Overgrown Tomb~$9Golgari graveyard decks
Sacred Foundry~$10Boros aggro’s backbone
Steam Vents~$12Izzet spells, the priciest of the cycle

Frequently asked questions

When does MTG Star Trek release?

November 13, 2026. Preorders are open now at local game stores, TCGplayer, and Amazon.

Is MTG Star Trek Standard legal?

Yes. TRK is a full Standard-legal expansion, not a Commander-only product — the same Universes Beyond treatment recent crossover sets have received.

Are all ten shock lands in Star Trek?

Yes — all ten are confirmed, and printing them together resets every shock land’s Standard rotation to November 2026, ending the staggered rotation caused by the Edge of Eternities / Lorwyn Eclipsed split.

How many Commander decks does Star Trek have?

Four: Federation Fleet, Landing Party, Klingon Fury, and We Are the Borg, at $74.99 each.

What are Star Trek’s new mechanics?

Federation, Assimilate, and Face a Dilemma are new. Spacecraft and Station are returning from Edge of Eternities (2025), despite being widely reported as new.

How many Star Trek cards have been revealed?

38 of 73 are live on Scryfall as of this writing, across TRK (61), TRC (11), and SDS (1). Expect the rest through spoiler season ahead of the November 13 release.

Where this lands

Star Trek is doing two jobs at once. For Commander players it’s a flavor-forward crossover with four precons and a genuinely smart Federation-versus-Borg design tension. For Standard players it’s a mana-base reset — the shock land cycle finally rotating as one unit instead of in two half-cycles.

The rest of the set is still coming: 35 cards remain unrevealed, including whatever “Starship Enterprise” turns out to be, given that Captain Kirk, Boldly Going tutors for it by name. If you want to start theorycrafting now, you can spin up a Klingon aggro or Borg artifact list in seconds with our AI MTG deck builder, or browse what other players are brewing over on public decks.

Also previewing at MagicCon Amsterdam this weekend: The Hobbit, which debuts July 18 and releases August 14. The in-universe fall set, Reality Fracture, follows October 2.
