MTG Defender Explained: How Defender Works, Walls, the 40 Best Defenders, Every Way to Attack With Them and a Budget Arcades Deck (2026)

Defender is the Magic: The Gathering keyword that stops a creature from attacking. That’s the whole rule: a creature with defender can’t attack. It can still block, still tap for its abilities, and still be turned into an attacker by the right card. Right now 310 cards in paper Magic have defender, and 275 of them cost under a dollar.

We pulled every defender from Scryfall and compared it with all 17,789 other creatures that have a printed power and toughness. The result is a clean trade. A defender averages 1.27 power and 4.02 toughness; every other creature averages 2.69 and 2.86. At the same mana value, defenders actually carry more total stats than normal creatures, and nearly all of the extra goes into toughness. That’s why the best defender decks don’t ignore the keyword. They use cards like Arcades, the Strategist and Felothar the Steadfast to make those walls attack for their toughness.

This guide covers the exact rule, what defender does and doesn’t stop, why Walls got the keyword in 2004, the numbers behind “defender buys toughness”, the 40 most-played defenders in Commander, every card that lets defenders attack, the best defender commanders (including Ghalta the Immovable from Reality Fracture, out 2 October), legality in every format, and a $42.45 budget Arcades Commander deck you can buy in one click.

What is defender in MTG?

Defender is a static ability. Here is the rule in full from the current Comprehensive Rules:

702.3a Defender is a static ability.
702.3b A creature with defender can’t attack.
702.3c Multiple instances of defender on the same creature are redundant.

The reminder text on the card says the same thing: “This creature can’t attack.” There’s no cost, no trigger and no exception written into the keyword. Every way around it comes from another card.

Three facts cover almost every rules question:

  • Defender only stops attacking. The creature blocks normally, can use tap abilities, can be sacrificed, and counts as a creature for everything else.
  • It’s a restriction, not a drawback that turns off. If something says a defender “attacks each combat if able”, the defender simply doesn’t attack. Restrictions win over requirements (rules 508.1c and 508.1d).
  • Two instances do nothing extra. A creature that has defender twice can’t attack, exactly like one that has it once. That matters for the “loses defender” wording covered below.

How defender works: the rules in plain English

Can a creature with defender block?

Yes. Defender has no effect on blocking. Defenders are built to block: most of them have high toughness, 36 of them have flying and 15 have reach, so they can stop fliers too. If a defender also has vigilance or a tap ability, it can use that ability and still be available to block, as long as it’s untapped when blockers are declared.

Can a creature with defender use tap abilities the turn it comes out?

No, not without haste. Defender doesn’t change summoning sickness. A mana wall like Sylvan Caryatid or Axebane Guardian can’t tap for mana the turn it enters, just like any other creature. That’s why a handful of blue defenders also have haste: Errant, Street Artist is a 0/3 with flash, defender and haste, so it can use its copy ability right away.

Can a creature with defender attack?

Only if another effect says it can. The usual wording is “can attack as though it didn’t have defender”. Arcades, the Strategist, Felothar the Steadfast, High Alert and Rolling Stones all give that permission to a group of creatures. Sixty defenders carry their own condition, like Krotiq Nestguard ({2}{G}: it can attack this turn) or Mirror Wall ({W}). A defender that gets permission to attack still needs to have been under your control since your turn began, or it needs haste. Crashing Drawbridge and Walking Bulwark both hand out haste for that reason.

“Loses defender” vs “as though it didn’t have defender”

Older and a few newer cards say a creature “loses defender” (Gargoyle Sentinel, Manor Gargoyle, Elder Land Wurm). Most modern cards say it “can attack as though it didn’t have defender”. The difference shows up when defender is added again. A creature that loses defender and then gets a Guard Duty put on it has defender again and can’t attack. A creature that can attack “as though it didn’t have defender” ignores every instance of defender, including ones added later.

What about goad and “attacks each combat if able”?

A goaded defender stays home. Goad adds a requirement (“attacks each combat if able”), and defender is a restriction. When the two conflict, the restriction wins and the attack declaration is legal without it. The same is true of any other “attacks each combat if able” effect. See our goad guide for the rest of the goad rules.

Defender vs Walls: why the keyword exists

For the first eleven years of Magic there was no defender keyword. Instead, the creature type Wall carried an unwritten rule: Walls can’t attack. That caused trouble once a creature could have any type. The Comprehensive Rules glossary still records the fix: older Wall cards “have received errata in the Oracle card reference to have defender.”

The change came with Champions of Kamigawa in October 2004, which Mark Rosewater explained in his column “Change for the Better” on 4 October 2004. After it, Wall became an ordinary creature type with no rules meaning, and “can’t attack” became a keyword that any creature could carry. The first new non-Wall defenders arrived four months later in Betrayers of Kamigawa: Opal-Eye, Konda’s Yojimbo, Kaijin of the Vanishing Touch and Traproot Kami. (One older card, Elder Land Wurm from Legends, is a non-Wall that received defender through errata.)

You can see the switch in the numbers. Of the 89 defenders printed before the keyword existed, 88 are Walls. Since 2005, most new defenders aren’t:

EraNew defendersWallsNon-WallsAverage P/TPower 0
1993–2004 (before the keyword)898810.99 / 4.0153 (60%)
2005–2009397321.39 / 4.1821 (54%)
2010–20145613431.45 / 4.0929 (52%)
2015–20194922271.27 / 4.0227 (55%)
2020–20267727501.40 / 3.9033 (43%)

Today 157 of the 159 Walls in Magic have defender. The two that don’t are both tricks. Mistform Wall has defender only “as long as it’s a Wall”, and its own ability can change its creature type, so it can shed the Wall type and attack. Wall of Stolen Identity is a Clone that enters as a copy of another creature, except that it’s a Wall and has defender, so its printed card has no defender of its own.

What defender buys you: the toughness math

Defender is a drawback, and Wizards prices it like one. To see how, we compared every defender with a printed power and toughness (308 cards) against every other creature (17,789 cards), grouped by mana value:

Mana valueDefendersAverage P/T (defenders)Other creaturesAverage P/T (others)Toughness differencePower difference
020.00 / 3.00210.81 / 1.33+1.67-0.81
1340.71 / 2.681,1991.05 / 1.28+1.40-0.34
21020.97 / 3.473,5031.64 / 1.75+1.72-0.67
31021.07 / 4.084,4022.14 / 2.33+1.75-1.07
4391.49 / 4.853,8512.78 / 3.02+1.83-1.29

All3081.27 / 4.0217,7892.69 / 2.86+1.16-1.42

The pattern holds from two mana to four. A two-mana defender averages 0.97/3.47; a two-mana creature without it averages 1.64/1.75. That’s two-thirds of a point of power given up for about 1.7 extra toughness. At three mana the trade is 1.07 power for 1.75 toughness, and at four it’s 1.29 for 1.83. At each of those mana values the defender ends up with more total power plus toughness than the average creature (4.44 vs 3.39 at two mana), but the extra all sits in the number that blocks.

Two more numbers show how far that goes. 162 of the 308 defenders (53%) have zero power, compared with 644 of the other 17,789 creatures (3.6%). And 85 defenders have toughness 5 or more. At the top end are The Walls of Ba Sing Se (0/30), The Pride of Hull Clade (2/15), and Tree of Perdition and Tree of Redemption (both 0/13).

That’s the whole reason defender decks exist. A pile of 0/4s and 0/6s does nothing on offence until a card changes how combat damage is counted. Then the stat defender pushed into toughness becomes damage. Our combat damage keywords guide covers how damage assignment works in general.

The 40 best defender cards in Commander

These are the 40 defenders that appear in the most Commander decks on EDHREC. The list splits into three jobs: mana (Sylvan Caryatid, Overgrown Battlement, Axebane Guardian, Wall of Roots), card draw (Wall of Omens, Wall of Blossoms), and engines that happen to have defender (Electrostatic Field and Thermo-Alchemist in spellslinger decks, Tree of Perdition and Tree of Redemption in life-swap decks). Crashing Drawbridge tops the list because it gives your whole team haste, which makes it good in any creature deck, not just defender ones.

Prices here are the cheapest ordinary printing. The Walls of Ba Sing Se, from Avatar: The Last Airbender, is the only defender on the list over $20: an eight-mana colourless 0/30 that gives your other permanents indestructible. It’s in 83,046 decks, which is far more than lead with it (1,474), so most players use it as a protection piece rather than as a commander.

How to attack with defenders

There are two separate problems to solve. First, defenders can’t attack. Second, even when they can, most have almost no power. The cards below fix one problem or both. Five of them fix both at once: Arcades, the Strategist, Felothar the Steadfast, Ghalta the Immovable, Assault Formation and High Alert.

Toughness damage doesn’t change power

Every card in this family uses the same wording: a creature “assigns combat damage equal to its toughness rather than its power”. The official rulings on Doran, Assault Formation and Felothar all make the same point: this changes only the amount of combat damage. The creature’s power stays what it is. So a 0/6 wall under Arcades deals 6 combat damage, but a “fight” or “deals damage equal to its power” effect still uses 0.

Doran hits everyone; Arcades and Felothar only help you

Doran, the Siege Tower says “each creature”, so your opponents’ creatures deal toughness damage too. Arcades changes only your creatures with defender. Felothar, Assault Formation, High Alert, Belligerent Brontodon and Huatli, the Sun’s Heart change all creatures you control. Tapestry Warden, Bedrock Tortoise, Ancient Lumberknot and Ghalta the Immovable change only your creatures whose toughness is greater than their power.

Attacking taps your wall

Once a defender attacks, it’s tapped and can’t block on your opponents’ turns unless it has vigilance. That’s the real cost of turning your defence into offence. Arcades has vigilance itself, and a few defenders like Weathered Sentinels have it too. High Alert adds an untap ability ({2}{W}{U}: untap target creature) for the same reason. Our vigilance guide lists more ways to attack without tapping.

Cards that give defender to your opponent’s creatures

Defender also works as soft removal. An Aura that gives an attacker defender stops it from attacking while leaving it able to block, which is weaker than Pacifism (can’t attack or block) but often cheaper. These are the ten cards that put defender on another creature:

The best of these add more than defender. Deep Freeze and Stasis Field also remove every other ability and set the creature’s base stats, and Spider-Man No More turns it into a 1/1 Citizen. Guard Duty and Zephyr Net only add defender, so the creature can still block and use its abilities.

The best defender commanders

EDHREC tags decks with the “Defenders” theme, and the commanders that lead those decks are almost never defenders themselves. The two most popular, Arcades and Felothar, have no defender at all; they’re the cards that make defenders attack. Only seven legendary creatures in Magic have defender, and the most popular is Pramikon, Sky Rampart, which most players use for its attack-direction rule rather than for a wall deck.

Arcades, the Strategist (green-white-blue)

Arcades is the classic defender commander, and still the most popular at 23,217 decks. It does three things: it draws a card whenever a defender enters under your control, it lets your defenders attack, and it makes them deal damage equal to their toughness. It also has flying and vigilance, so it doesn’t weaken your defence to attack. Its colours give it the best defenders in the game: blue has the most defenders of any colour (75), white is second (60) and green adds the mana walls.

Felothar the Steadfast (white-black-green)

Felothar led the Abzan Armor precon from Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander (April 2025), and that deck is the best ready-made defender deck ever printed. It holds 23 cards from this guide’s family, including Rampart Architect, Tree of Redemption, Wall of Roots, Axebane Guardian and Walking Bulwark. No other precon out of the 174 we track has more than six. Felothar changes damage for all your creatures, not only defenders, and it can sacrifice a big-toughness wall to draw cards equal to that toughness. You can see the full list on our Abzan Armor precon page.

Ghalta the Immovable (mono-white, new)

Reality Fracture is released on 2 October 2026, and it adds a mono-white option to a list led by three-colour commanders. Ghalta the Immovable is an {8}{W} 0/7 that costs {X} less, where X is the greatest toughness among your creatures. With a 0/6 wall out, it costs three mana. It lets your creatures attack as though they didn’t have defender, and your creatures with more toughness than power deal toughness damage. Before release it’s already in 330 EDHREC decks, 26 of them tagged Defenders, and it costs about $0.35 as a pre-order. It’s the cheapest way to build a defender deck without green or blue.

The Walls of Ba Sing Se and The Pride of Hull Clade

If you want a commander that actually has defender, these are the two that fit a wall deck. The Walls of Ba Sing Se makes everything else you control indestructible, which makes attacking with walls much safer. The Pride of Hull Clade is an eleven-mana 2/15 that costs {X} less, where X is the total toughness of your creatures. For {2}{U}{U} it lets one of your creatures attack as though it didn’t have defender and draw cards equal to its toughness when it deals combat damage to a player.

Defender legality in every format

Defender is an evergreen keyword with no ban history of its own. Nearly every defender is legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage:

FormatLegal defenders (of 310)Share
Standard268%
Pioneer14848%
Modern23375%
Legacy30799%
Vintage30799%
Commander30899%
Pauper15751%
Historic (Arena)11738%
Brawl (Arena)11738%

Only two cards in this whole family are banned anywhere in Commander, Legacy or Vintage, and neither is banned for being too strong. Prize Wall is an Unfinity card that uses tickets and stickers, and it’s banned in Legacy, Vintage and Pauper. Weight Advantage is a Conspiracy card, which is only meant for Conspiracy drafts; it’s banned in Commander, Legacy and Vintage. One more defender is banned in a single format: Stirring Bard, which takes the initiative when it enters, has been banned in Pauper since 2022 (our initiative guide covers that ban). Standard has only 26 defenders right now, so defender decks are mostly a Commander, Pauper and cube thing. Check the MTG banned list for every current ban.

Budget Arcades, the Strategist Commander deck ($42.45)

This is a 100-card Arcades deck built to show the archetype working at the lowest sensible price. Every card was checked against Scryfall for Commander legality and colour identity, and priced at its cheapest ordinary printing: $42.45 total.

The plan is simple. Play a defender almost every turn, draw a card off each one with Arcades, and attack for toughness once the board is big enough. The deck runs 42 creatures with defender. Together they have 201 toughness and 21 power, so with Arcades on the battlefield they hit about ten times harder than their printed power. Eight of them help your mana (Sylvan Caryatid, Overgrown Battlement, Axebane Guardian, Wall of Roots, Vine Trellis, Saruli Caretaker, Gatecreeper Vine for a land, and Sunscape Familiar for cost reduction), so the deck ramps while it draws.

Five backups keep the plan alive if Arcades is removed: Assault Formation, High Alert, Belligerent Brontodon, Bedrock Tortoise and Huatli, the Sun’s Heart all make your creatures deal toughness damage, and Assault Formation, High Alert and Walking Bulwark let defenders attack. Crashing Drawbridge gives haste, so a wall that just came down can swing the same turn. Unbreakable Formation protects the board from a wrath on the turn you go wide.

Upgrades, in order: The Walls of Ba Sing Se (about $24) makes your whole board indestructible and is the best single addition. Heroic Intervention and Teferi’s Protection are better board protection than Unbreakable Formation. Wall of Shards and Wall of Nets are strong but pricier walls. Defender FAQ

What does defender mean in Magic: The Gathering?

A creature with defender can’t attack (rule 702.3b). It can still block, use its abilities and do everything else a creature does.

Can a creature with defender block?

Yes. Defender only stops attacking. Blocking is what defenders are for.

Do all Walls have defender?

157 of the 159 Walls do. Mistform Wall has defender only while it’s a Wall, and Wall of Stolen Identity gains defender only when it copies something. Before 2004, the Wall type itself meant “can’t attack”; those Walls were given defender by errata.

When was defender added to Magic?

Defender became a keyword with Champions of Kamigawa in October 2004. The first new non-Wall creatures with defender came in Betrayers of Kamigawa in February 2005.

Can a creature with defender attack if it has haste?

No. Haste only removes summoning sickness. The creature still needs a card that says it “can attack as though it didn’t have defender” or makes it lose defender.

Does defender stop a creature from tapping for mana?

No. Mana walls like Sylvan Caryatid and Axebane Guardian tap for mana normally. They still can’t tap the turn they enter without haste.

What happens if a defender is goaded?

It doesn’t attack. Goad says the creature attacks if able, but defender means it isn’t able, and restrictions beat requirements.

Which commander is best for a defender deck?

Arcades, the Strategist is the most popular (23,217 EDHREC decks) and the easiest to build around. Felothar the Steadfast is second and has a ready-made precon, Abzan Armor. Ghalta the Immovable from Reality Fracture is the new budget mono-white option.

Does Arcades change a creature’s power?

No. Arcades changes only how much combat damage your defenders deal. Their power stays the same for every other effect.

What is the best creature with defender?

By Commander play, Crashing Drawbridge (156,357 EDHREC decks), then Wall of Omens (140,708). For a defender deck specifically, the mana walls (Sylvan Caryatid, Overgrown Battlement, Axebane Guardian) and the card-draw walls (Wall of Omens, Wall of Blossoms) are the core.
